Also you guy's need to understand. I have a 3yo Samoyed that has HD, over extended hock joints, and recently shoulder problems that are only slightly improving after 2 weeks of pain meds and cartrophen injection. If it doesn't show major signs of improvement in the next week, my boy may have OCD which, I think, is usually hereditary. But I love my boy other than his health probs he has a wonderful temperament and he is beautiful! So I am a bit peeved that maybe the breeder knew about some of these things and didn't tell me what I was in for. I mean you guy's know more than I do, could she have known or at least suspected these problems due to his parents?

I have just been catching up on old posts - sounds like you have had some interesting discussions (sorry I missed them :( )

Toughgirl I found the above post upsetting, it is always sad to hear of a Samoyed has HD. I am sure you will fine Icemists response helpful. HD is something breeders try their hardest to avoid, and the reason why we take the time to x-ray all breeding stock to prevent this as much as possible. I know most breeders hip and elbow score their dogs, and Bindi is right in saying 0:0 elbows is common.

The current breed average is currently 16.93.

You may wish to ring your breeder and ask for a copy of the hip score results, just to put your mind at ease.

Hi Kelza,

Simba only has mild HD so it's not too bad at the moment. Icemist's ideas were really awesome :D

and I will get onto them ASAP.

I might give her a call as I would like to know out of interest.

I think I may have just been unlucky with Simba in regards to his joint problems.

Otherwise he is pretty much perfect ;) hehehehe

"Great and Legendry" Kalina Kennels in Victoria have always dominated with the quality of the breed.

That is why nearly ALL the top Samoyed breeders through out Australia have started and gone on from strength to strength because of those dogs that have come from the boundaries within VIC, including the ones in SA. This is still happening today. Most breeders when looking for a stud dog will investigate VIC due to the vast amounts of breeders and the quality they produce within that state.

All the top Kennels today and in yester-year in Australia, have all started with Kalina stock or from Kalina stock (VIC). A FACT that is not, can not be debated by anyone with knowledge into the history of the breed.

Mrs Eve Sydenham-Clarke, owner of Kalina, is WORLD recognised, and is without doubt, will go down in history within this breed, and all breeds.

She is the Grand Mother to all Samoyeds in this country. She brought into this country, and has bred some of Australia's greatest Samoyeds. which will be behind nearly every Samoyeds lines (exception to the current imports).

It is good that your breeder has supported you for 10 years. IMO, who ever your breeder is, if they have supported you, through thick and thin, I will pat them on the back. :cheer: There should be more support from breeder's wether the pups are pets or show.

It's good to hear this, and there is no offense to your breeder or others from any state, by saying what have said.

I completely agree with you Icemist :cheer: Kalina is the foundation of Australian Samoyeds and we have Mrs Y Sydenham-Clarke to thank for that. Some of the stunning dogs - Eng & Aust Ch. Imperial Rebel of Kobe (imp UK), Ch. Kalina Kirof Kozak, Ch. Kalina Uki Tochka, Ch. Kalina Silver Troika (to name a couple) played a part in the establishment of our beautiful breed and it is because of the Kalina Kennels. In Vic, we have a recently introduced a Kalina Trophy at our yearly Championship Show, which is awarded to an Import or progeny of an import to knowledge the wonderful contribution Mrs Sydenham-Clark did by importing loving dogs and establishing lines here in Australia. Kalina is definitely a name everyone knows in Australia and around the world. I enjoy looking at the old dogs and the lines, especially photo's on the original Samoyeds, they really haven't changed that much as time goes on.

In regards to keeping in contact with puppy buyers, we like to know our puppies are well and happy and try and keep a relationship with their owners long after the puppies grow up. This way if the person comes into a situation where they can no longer care for the puppy, hopefully we will be their first to call. It is always nice to feel they can turn to the breeder for advise as I think Malo appreciated the relationship with her breeder. A puppy buyer sent me photo's the other day of Tamiera's (Ch Airebis Arctic Whispers) Son and Daughter, they are 9 years old and 11 years old and very happy. It brought a tear to my eye as they are very similar to her.

As for Victorian Dogs, we have a large number of very competitive Samoyeds in Victoria (I think we average the highest entry at shows). So there's more to choose from here :cheer: plus we have a few imports. I am looking forward to the National in June to see all the dogs around Australia. Icemist are you heading to the National?

Hi Kelza,

Welcome to the forum.

I actually didnt recognise you with your first couple of posts. I don't think my brain was in gear! Too much going on at the moment.

I have been thinking about going to the national, but I am hoping to hear the sound of little paws and play fighting around that time if all goes to plan.

Little paws are exciting, we were considering having a litter from Coco which would meant we would have 4-5week old puppies at Nationals time, but it would mean mum or I would have had to stay home and I absolutely love the National and have been looking forward to it for over a year now :( so we decide to have a litter from Coco and Shimmer after the National. (I don't know whether two at once is more crazy). Queensland are going to put on a show, some of the things they are doing they are setting the bar extremely high.

So you don't know if your girl is pregnant yet?

For those that have no idea what the National is:

It is a dog show held once every three years. Moving around different states, this time it is in Brisbane, Qld and the following will be held in Melbourne, Vic. It is judged by a specialist from overseas and Samoyeds from all around Australia attend. It is the biggest Samoyed show. :o

I have a second litter planned, if all goes well and she comes in, around the time of national. I am still looking for possible sires so my mind is still open to who she will go to. The girl will be Star. http://www.dogzonline.com.au/breeds/profile.asp?dog=30622

I also have a special litter due in approx 3 weeks. Can't wait, but can't say much until the pups hit the ground..literaly. Too much can still go wrong and I don't want to jinx this as I only get one shot at it.

I am unsure if any goss has gotten out about the pregnancy, and people do know about it.

All I'll say is that the dog has long past, and their are a couple of people down your way chomping at the bit waiting to see what is born, and have their fingers and toes crossed.

The pups I think will be too young for the National.

These two are the only litters I have planned for what I will think the next 18 months to 2 years. ;)

Icemist I am aware of your litter due, and very excited to know how it all goes. The Sire is a dog I loved and his daughter I treasured  I wish you all the very best with it and will be waiting to hear news ;) :D

It will be close, depending on when she goes..they will either just make it or just miss out.

Good luck!

It looks like the owners of the dog, have let the cat of of the bag. ;) DW was very excited to hear she was preg.

I think JW worked out they would just miss the national, but I will have to check myself, after they hit the ground.

Anyway Im very exicted as I have always wanted a pup directly from him. He has thrown some very nice pups in the past inc Tamiera .

Icemist, how is mumma these days anyway?

Expecting Mumma (and past mumma) is doing well. She's full of life, still very active and has a sparkle in her eye.

She enjoys her belly being rubbed with nursery rimes sung to her!

I love that girl, such a character

Even with the small elephants she gave birth to last time she was bouncing around wanting all the cuddles for her, stuff giving the pups attention

Hi Kelza, welcome to DOL, lovely to meet more Sammie people!!

Do you know if the dates for the Melbourne National next year are already confirmed? I'd love to go along and see all the Sammies in one place! Sounds like my idea of heaven! Where abouts in Melbourne will it be held, and are pet Sammies welcome to attend and visit too, or would it be best to leave my girl at home?

BTW, Sonnet is adorable!

Icemist: I had a look at Star's profile, she is indeed a beauty, but I wouldn't expect anything less from Mistral's sister, hehehe. My girl Dakota also has a sister named Star! I can't wait to see how things go for your breeding program, and see the puppy pics of course!

Sorry to butt in Pip

The National is only every three years so it isn't in Melbourne until 2013, I think.

You should pop along to the Samoyed Open Parade at KCC Park next month.

I will be there, pretty sure Kel and Bindii will be too

lol SnoPaws, don't be sorry, I'm such a dill  Maybe I should have just looked this info. up somewhere...

I don't want to wait until 2013!!! lol, and I can't go to Brisbane, so, yes, maybe I will come along to this Parade you speak of...what happens there? Is it run by Vic. Samoyed Club? And, same as above, are pet Sammies welcome to come along? Do you have to be a member of any kind to attend?

Oh, and most important question, when is it? lol

Cheers

Yep it is run by the Samoyed Club, it is their annual open show.

I am sure Dakota will be more than welcome and no you don't have to be a member to come along.

It is the 18th of April, I think it starts at about 11am but I will have to check the Snow Courier to make sure

Thanks SnoPaws, I just checked their website...not sure if I can go, I should be back from holidays then, but I think the Kepala meet is on the same day, and Dakota LOVES that, so if we are home we'll go there..

but I notice there is a championship show at the same locaton in August, I'm sure I will come along to see that, I'm guessing nearly everyone and their dogs will be there too!
