Samoyed

Perhaps it's like this with other breeds too, although I am not an expert. My girl (Cavalier) is happy to do her own thing but will come for cuddles but very independent, whereas Codi will cry and sook for me. Lol.

If we did get one it would probably be a girl so that it's not too much bigger than Codi.

*sigh* it will still be a long way in the future though. So clucky for another puppy!

Well I should be heading up to Syndey for a few shows with my new girl (fingers crossed the mother whelps a girl  ) so you could come and get your puppy fix then

I originally wanted a girl and the breeder asked me why, saying that often people think girls are better in temperament and more obedient, whereas he had always found the boys were often the more obedient and willing to please and girls were more likely to be independent and wanting to do their own thing. He also said he had found his boys were definitely more sooky and cuddly then his girls.

I don't agree. A friend of mine was told the same thing by her breeder and ended up getting a boy, she is so amazed by my girl and her love and loyalty to me because the breeder told her boys are the more loving ones, she has had to really work with her boy to build the bond.

We have only ever had a maximum of 5 Samoyeds and we are a family of 4 (I have 2  ), but my point is the more time you spend with your Samoyed (male or female) the stronger the bond is. Temperament is important though and yes it can differ from puppy to puppy, and this is not dependant on sex. As puppies you can tell the very outgoing ones from the more relaxed. But in saying that my girl Shimmer loves playing fetch, do herding, agility or showing, but would be just as happy to cuddle all day in bed. She is most happy when we are doing something together, and if she wants a cuddle she just leaps into my arms  . During the day she is at home and completely happy. Sonnet my boy well he is going through the "Junior stage" - stuble and disobedient at tims but loves cuddles but loves to play. Shimmer has been easier to train, but that also comes back to "time". I had a little more time to train her. Our other kids Coco (girl) is very relaxed and obedient without any proper training, Inka (boy) is very responsive when you want to teach him something and Monet (girl) is the most lovable girl who just wants cuddles, and would love them all day. They all love cuddles, and are very spoilt family members.

In my opinion I think sometimes the difference is "kennel dogs" Vs "family dogs" rather than male Vs Female. Family dogs are around people more and develop a love and bond that is unique. It is in my opinion that family dogs have a lot more personality and are often better socialised and this is also passed onto puppies. I definitely notice the difference of "Kennel" dogs and "family" Samoyeds in the show ring.

I sometimes forget that some people accept certain levels of aggression with dogs and prey instincts, but this hasn't ever been a problem with ours (except the poor bunny incident).

They are great with children too, although funnily enough, many parents come over asking if their kids can pat the dogs, meanwhile the kids look absolutely terrified of them because they are big and fluffy!

People in other breeds may except aggression but Samoyeds should not show agression towards any human! Our standard states The Samoyed is intelligent, alert, full of action but above all displaying affection towards all mankind. This comes from their breed history, they would work all day and keep the children warm at night.

My Sammys live with 2 cats and a rabbit. If samoyeds are brought up with animals they are generally very good with them. My bunny has attitude and my dogs love her, but I wouldn't allow a Samoyed outside my home near her as they would be used to a Bunny. I am sure a Sammy would be fine with a JP as a friend, JP can be a little bit of a jealous breed so you might want to check the JP will love a Sammy. Bindi on DOL has a Sammy & a Pug and they are great together.

Samoyeds really are fabulous dogs, cookiez if you are really considering getting a Samoyed in the future I would recomend you talk to a couple of breeders, get to meet their dogs, see the temperments. Some people think dogs that wins heaps are the best dogs, this is not always the case.

I am sure if you decide to welcome a Samoyed into your home you will wonder why you haven't done it sooner, they really are amazing :cheer:

As other members have mentioned they are quiet stubborn but i believe even first time owners can manage this breed after doing their homework  Btw all the samoyeds here are gorgeus i will upload photos of Bobby asap

thanks everyone

When you say now 8 weeks? have you had the puppy before 8 weeks?

Samoyed puppies are super cute, the best thing is when they get older they are just as cute :cheer:

You know Kelza it's interesting you mention the difference between kennel vs pet.

I was having a similar conversation with someone the other day and I agree with what you have said.

Kennel or family samoyeds  Both can be very successful in the showring

Family Samoyeds or pets are part of the family first and foremost which I personaly think is important :D

Hey Kelza, Ive had Bobby since he was 6 weeks, due to the breeder having very bad circumstances and had to let the puppies go early

I have a pup at my house at the moment, about 4 months old, very playful and friendly but determined to pull out mouthfuls of fur from my girl Samoyed and swallow them. It is the second pup I have had here of similar age that has liked to eat Samoyed fur. The current pup then later coughs up furballs (sounds and looks disgusting!).

Apart from telling off pup when we see him do it and then physically removing him, I am not sure how to stop it.

Has anyone else encountered this sort of fondness for Sammy fur? The pup is a mixed breed with no real obvious breed so not sure if there are wool eating dogs out there that normally do this sort of thing, but my dogs have never deliberately pulled out and eaten each other's fur.!

It's more then likely the sun.

I find the more time my Sammie's spend outside in the sun over summer the lighter their noses get.

Hi All!

I just bought a one year old Samoyed and he's super-super-super cute! I think I'm now fully converted to Samoyed lover!

The owner said he's hasn't been in any training yet and he's not house broken. So I'm looking at good obedience course for him. I live in Perth, south of the river area.

Does anyone have recommendation? Trainers with experience with Samoyed/Husky is preferred...

Thanks,

Squee

where south of the river??? there is a dog trainer who has had huskys that does training out of baldivis vet clinic. UM if you are closer to southern river you can go to the training there the spiz club holds training there. there is also Rockingham dog club.

have you had a sammie before? Has your boy got papers and where was he breed? My boy is 1 as well. They are great dogs super super smart but i would say that aren not like huskys LOL. i find sammies are a little easier.

As regards to house training that sucks he has not been trained. do what you would do with a pup :) Also they are smart my boy loves learning stuff. soooo im sure if you do small training sessions a few times a day the basics will come in no time. Good luck sounds like you are in the for a hard but rewarding slog.
