Can anyone tell me the go with parti colours? I know the standard states 'all solid colours' so that means parti is a fault? Does parti pop up in litters of non parti parents? Just curious as you don't see many and mainly see them in mini's and toys.

To the standard Parti's are a misark, not realy a fault.

Parti's, brindles, phantoms etc have been occuring in poodles nearly a long as solids, its just when a group of ppl sat around a table decided to make them a big No No..

Some partis can pop up anywhere, but normally if they do somewhere down the line on both parents was a parti, there are a couple linein Aust now that have parti lines behind them in Standards that I know of.

Im one of a few that would like to see parti's allowed int he ring, cause, colour has no affect on confirmation, so why sould it be not allowed.

thanks for that. Also i read that they should be over 15 inches to be a standard but what is the average height? I've seen quite a few tall standards but don't know if that is a correct height. I'm talking over 25 inches.

I am not sure if you can mention breeders on here but StuartLea in Victoria have party standards, check out his web site.

as longas they are over 15" then they are with correct hight for standard poodles in Aust as we don't have height restrictions, so we have som very tall and very short standards in Australia.'''

Stuartlea arent the only ones, there are a couple.

I'll measure mine and give you a height comparison of our 2, bit later today.

They are the only ones I have seen that have standards, I don't personally know anything about them or there dogs. There is another person that breeds mini's near Brisbane.

Ok I just measured my two and my female is 21.5 inches tall and my male is 28 inches tall, she can nearly walk under him.

21.5 would be quite small even for a bitch. I have a soft spot for the smallies but they are often penalised in the ring - despite what the breed standard says so you don't see many petite standards.

Yes Ella is very small some people think she is a mini, she was brought as a pet so its never bothered me.

We compete in Obedience, our girl Freya completed her Novice title (CD) last year. One of our girls, Lea is training for Agility and Freya's grandaughter Athena is training for obedience, should be ready to trial very soon.

The top obedience dog in Victoria last year was one of the Giday standard poodles, there are several Giday poodles doing very well in the obedience ring.

I am a newbie std poodle owner :( :( so far so good. Julie is an ex show dog that could possible produce carries of juvenile renal disease, her half brother who has the same father is a definate carrier, so she could or could not be a carrier but as there is no test the breeder did not want to take the risk so removed her from her breeding plan. Julie is well socialised with ppl and dogs, both she tends to ignore other than me and my partner who are "her pack" and the kids which she was not used to before coming here but now loves them, she was playing football with the 4 kids (2kids are my partners from another reli) on the weekend out here on the farm we were kicking it and she was snatching it and doing zoomies with it in her mouth and accidently kicking it along with her front feet!!!! soooo funny. she is settling in nicely now after only being with us for 9 days and is very attached already to me and my partner.

The other day just after i got her my mother mentioned to her friend who used to show ridgebacks that i gotten a std poodle and she told my mum to tell me to be careful because std poodles can be quiet nasty and not as good temp as the other sizes bla bla, :cheer: im like wtf? she doesnt know the breed, would never of read up on the breed, i say something like that to mum and she said oh but she would of seen them at the shows etc.... the ignorance of some ppl annoys me to no extent!!!!

Overall, we have found that Standards have the best, most even temperament out of all sizes. It can also depend on the lines behind the dogs and the early socializing they have had, especially with children.

I am an Educator with the Responsible Pet Education Program, 3 of our dogs are certified as suitable to take into schools as demonstration dogs, even my entire male showdog.

Enjoy your standard poodle, they are wonderful family dogs.

Hello all,

this is my first post so apologies if i have placed it in the wrong area. Circumstances being what they are we are now ready to add a standard poodle to our family. At this point in time we are thinking we require a companion dog that would be suitable for obedience/trialling/agility. I have searched this forum as best i can for answers to my questions. I was reading with interest a thread back in 2007 about the temperament of std poodles based on coat colour, more specifically the red and at the time a perceived tendency for the red dogs to be nervous and timid.

Is this still an issue or has the breeding over the subsequent years got rid of these traits, and are all colours on par with each other with regards to the breed standard?

Is there anything special to look for in a puppy that would make it better at obedience trialling etc as opposed to the show ring, or is the best puppy simply the best puppy?

Hoity, you basically want a breeder who can match the correct temperament for what you want. I asked my breeder for a more laid back dog that i could still have fun doing agility/obedience and thats exactly what I have got.

He is more than happy to laze around but if I say its training time he jumps up and is ready to go.

Cant give you much info on temperament vs. coat colour as I dont know enough about it :)

It comes down to how much time and effort you want to spend on teaching the new puppy, any colour can do Obed. Reds are starting to improve in Temperment.

Have a looka round there are currently 13 Litters on the Puppylisting on DOL, talk to the breeders see what temp. the parents have and see if they suit you.

Good luck and if you have anymore questions pop into the poodle thread in the Breed specific section - more people visit there lol

Thanks for the replies, we did visit a potential breeder the other day, met the dad and was very impressed. Will keep reading and learning, Poodle thread is very long.
