Obedience School

Hi all,

We want to get Wugs into an obedience training school or classes,i know we should have done this by now,but he is well socialised with friends dogs,he can sit,stay,Drop,Down,come,he walks pretty good on a lead,sometimes sits down and wont budge without some encouragement.

He is nearly 6 months old,house trained,but he still likes to bite a bit too much,he knows the command of "gentle" and "no Biting",but we want to get him as much out of the habit as possible,we also just want a well balanced,well mannered and well trained dog,we also want to learn alot more as well,like how to read body language,and be balanced with the dog ourselves etc.

We are on the southside of Brisbane,i have checked out a few,but how do i decide on which one,any ideas,experiences and suggetions would be great,here are the main ones i have looked at,

VIP at Yatala

RSPCA at Fairfield

Good Dog Bad Dog

Pet City at macgregor

Centenary Dog Obedience

Southside Dog Obedience

I have been with two of the listed ones above.

VIP yatala we did a puppy class with and they were okay.

I would strongly recommend Good Dog Bad Dog. Jet has learned so much from there and so have I. They are really nice people and will happily help you with everything. Its amazing how Jet progressed from the start to finish!

Thanks jettyjet,Good Dog Bad Dog was one of my top 3,and i have also heard that VIP is very good,did Jet and yourself really enjoy the training?as i dont want Wugs or us to think of training as a chore,i want us all to enjoy the experience and get everything out of it as we possibly can,he seemed to enjoy his home training we gave him,as it was food reward based,and he loved showing us that he knew what we were saying and he could do what we asked him to.

yes he loved it, also for the social side too. No doubt Wugs will like it too. I felt that GDBD gave us more attention one on one. where as at VIP the group was larger and not as much one on one contact. IMO

I have used Centenary for puppy classes and I think they are quite good. Some people on this site disagreed with some of their methods when I posted a question but then you get all sorts of opinions on here. I found them reasonably priced and genuinely interested in achieving success for you with your dog.

My pup was a bit growly when being touched around muzzle. They said to hold her firmly and look in the eye until calm then let her down. Some members though this was an old fashioned method of dealing and that my pups reaction was fear not agression. I tend to agree with them but all other aspects of the puppy class were good so I kept going. My pup still reacts a bit to the mouth touching but in all other respects is doing really well. Lee the owner emailed from time to time to see how things were going which I thought was good. Also she runs a kids club with the entrance money going to charity and let me go to the classes twice a week with no extra charge. I can't comment on the obedience classes but we will probably be going to them in the new year when Meg is old enough.

I have been to Southside Dog Obedience twice now, they are breaking over Xmas break atm... The people there are really friendly, me lab is a really excited doggy. When I first get there he would chase after anything that moves.. people or dog. After the first lesson, he has settled down alot more, the lessons are short (relatively since time flies when its fun) and everyone there is really friendly.

Didnt think Pet City at Macgregor does classes (maybe I'm blind?), sure you are not referring to the one at Mt Gravatt showgrounds ?
