Probably about every third house around here has a dog that barks, runs up and down the fence etc, when we walk past.

It is frustrating, especially if you own a non-vocal breed who gets freaked out quite easily by barking dogs.

However the best thing to do is to train your own dog to be less reactive.

If the other dogs are properly secured in their own property, and not barking excessively (check your council guidelines if unsure), they're not doing anything really wrong, as annoying as it is.

Did you smack her after she finally came back? Now if I knew that when I finally came back I would get a smack, I wouldn't come back either.

Crazy Daisy , I feel like that too

Here we get quite a few farm dogs that roam , luckily most of their owners are pretty good if you talk to them but the amount of times I"ve been approached by dogs while out walking is enough to put me off sometimes.

Today I just walked down my street and a Kelpie ( who needs training badly) just about broke it's neck when it came flying out from under the garage towards us but it's tied up so got janked back.

Then the owner says "sit down Jessie , come on be a good girl" while the dog is doing it's nut  It scared me that much I swear my heart stopped and I shook all the way to the park. I wish he'd just train the thing so it won't end up being a dangerous dog.

All I want to do too is walk my dog , who is well trained and socialised yet you get hassled by other people dogs.

I dont mind dogs who bark as we walk past, I dont even mind if they fence run (even though it sometimes sets Kei off into a state of mad excitement).

What I DO mind are the dogs that are not contained properly. 2ft high fencing, opened gates, 1ft gaps under the fences, NO fencing at all! Though it really does depend on the dog, whether it is calm in its yard or whether it is rushing out or launching itself aggressively at the fence...

An aggressive dog should never be left in a front yard no matter what IMO. Too many things that could go wrong. Where-as an over excited barking dog can be a bit of a pain but is relatively harmless in most cases

Walking inside whilst your dog has a fit at passers by is just plain bad manners though.

Ah the joys of semi rural living where the annoying noises come from my house

LOVE IS.............donkeys braying, horses neighing, turkeys gobbling, peacocks honking, owls screaming, kangaroos coughing, camels groaning, sheep baaing, goat making that goat sound, owls screeching, chickens clucking, ducks quacking, koalas grunting, frogs croaking, cat meowing, crickets trilling, little fluffy pom cross high pitch barks and big dog woofs.

OMG! No! Never smack your dog for not coming back to you! I see that so often and then the owners wonder why the dog won't come when they're called. It's pretty obvious really. What's the incentive???

Smacking dogs, if ever done, should be reserved for only very serious situations IMO and even then you've gotta know what you're doing.

If you want your dog to come back instead of chasing something, you need to make it more FUN to return to you than it is to chase the other dog. Screaming, yelling, smacking etc achieves the opposite. Don't let her off the lead before she is trained to recall for a start. But sometimes it happens by accident so you need to know how you're going to get her back (hopefully). And keep in mind she's not being "naughty" she's just having fun and not understanding what you want.

My newly adopted untrained dog accidentally pulled the lead out of my hand the other day while walking through a forest and started trotting happily off up the track. I said "Oh shit" and a friend who was with me immediately panicked and roared "TANGO GET BACK HERE" and started chasing him. I told her to stop and don't yell. Then I ran in the opposite direction calling "Look Look! What's this Tango, what's over here!!!" in the silliest brightest voice I could manage and then stopped and pretended to be interested in something in the bushes. Tango came back to see what was so interesting in the bushes and I gave him a million pats and quietly picked up the end of the lead. Unfortunately I didn't have any treats with me  because that would have been the best thing to do when he came back, but I'll remember to take them next time!!!

Even I was shocked at how easily I got him back (don't know if it will always be that easy LOL) but if my friend had gone chasing after him and yelling like he was going to get a thrashing I can guarantee I'd never have found him again.

Without sidetracking this thread in to who and why of the smack, I can you can assure all it was the first time ever. Done in frustrating as it happened last time we ran into this little dog. A 35 kg gsd chasing a mini foxie. We have builders going up & down our track which is shared by 3 properties driving like it was a freeway regardless of wildlife and if they had ran in front of one of them it would have been the end of one or both dogs.

Yep, dogs are like children, very frustrating but don't hit in frustration. You'll feel bad and your dog will feel confused. He/she will only remember being hit when it came to you. There is no recall about being hit for chasing little dog fido down the trail. Your dog wont associate the crime with the punishment unless it's an instant response. I know, it's hard to praise your dog when you've been made so angry by it's unacceptable behaviour.

Don't give your dog the opportunity to chase another dog if at all possible

God that sounds just like where I used to live

I don't mind dogs barking their heads off but there was a Border Collie in our old street that would stand up on the fence (which it could easily have jumped over, but thankfully never did) and growl, bark and snarl at us....that's not cool....

As long as the dogs can't get to you then I don't have an issue.

I can understand your frustration but that is just more of a reason not to smack a dog. Making a dog less likely to return to you in that situation is surely the opposite of what you would like to achieve? He won't know your reasoning, only what actually happened.

Actually, I'm going to go against the OP here, and say that I love it when I have dogs barking in the street and acting like nuts behind their fences. The reason? Excellent training opportunities for my dogs to learn that even when you have a silly thing going off behind its fence, you ignore it. Thats what top dogs do  So we go looking for streets like that!

However, even when just walking our local streed I have had occassions where dogs have rushed out, which is different, only because I am not sure 100% how the other dog will react. A couple of weeks ago a SWF got away from its owner and came tearing up to me when I walking my boy. To his credit, Bear sat when I told him too, even with this nutty thing going off, and we waited for the owner to recover it. We didn't move as I know that some dogs like to circle behind and have a go from there, and I'm pretty sure my teenage boy would probably take that on as an insult to his doghood....! So dogs out from behind fences, without their owners, is not one of my fav things - its the reason we don't do dog parks anymore! (except Kepala - the lappie babies all love *that* dog park!)

 Not as prevalent in my area as it seems to be in yours but ..

bah dogs will be dogs some better behaved then others but I can't see why you would genuinely be 'angry' about this

Ah well I agree with you lappiemum it does help to teach your own fur baby how to behave when there are misbehaving dogs around. :(

I agree with this. I know barking can be a pain in the bum. Even my boy does it when people walk past, if I am home ofcourse I will go out and try to stop him.

We go for a walk and there is probably two-three dogs that are running up and down barking with the fence. A couple of months ago Jet would of pulled and gone crazy, barking and growling, but now after alot of extra walking and some training he might still look in that direction but he just continues to walk and doesnt make a sound

Generally I yell at my dog to stop barking but there are occasions when I let her bark. We have some horse riders who ride around and around in circles outside our fence and Raspa goes beserk barking at them, I asked one of them one day why they do it and apparently it is to train their horses not to be spooked when a dog barks at them. I do understand their reasoning but it is bloody annoying when my poor dog has to get yelled at and into trouble just so they can train their horses.

Another one here who uses nutty barking dogs behind fences to train my new boy not to be spooked by other dogs. It's a nice safe way to do it and he's becoming great at not worrying about barking dogs. My friend keeps taking her dog out into the middle of the road to get away from barking dogs but I'm trying to convince her to do what I'm doing. I give him lots of praise and a treat if he focusses on me when walking past the noisy ones :o

TraceyB - That feels a little rude on their part. They probably should have talked to you about it first.

I have a dog who fence rushes and barks like crazy when SOME people walk past.

Most of the time he is in his yard away from the front fence but sometimes he isn't.

I hate the people who walk their dogs out the front of my house and let them stop to sniff him through the fence. He doesn't care about the people who just keep walking (with or without a dog) but if you stop out the front of his house, he will try and move you along.

Even better was one day when my husband was talking to a client at our front gate and an idiot walked her dog along and when Ronin started going off she stopped walking and let it move closer to the fence. Husband told her to keep walking and she abused him.

Hmmm... if she kept walking, he wouldn't have barked.

btw - I don't mind him fence rushing ocassionally if it means that people think they might get their arm ripped off if they come in here. It's a good deterrent. (and he wouldn't hurt a fly)
