RallyValley Posted April 23, 2010 Share Posted April 23, 2010 Toby has allergies but he only gets itchy on his feet and belly where he has very thin hair. His allergies are very seasonal, at the moment he is flaring up but previously to that he had gone 3 months without any allergies. He usually only flares up for 2 or so weeks then will be fine. I have changed diets to various things and have found that if he runs through longer grass he will flare up regardless of diet, so he is now on Nutro with meaty bones supplemented. Masons is also a bit seasonal, especially as the seasons change, dont know what he is like in winter yet as last year he was a pup and never seemed to have any allergies, as we went into October thats when he started getting the swelling eyes etc, so we have to wait and see. My friend took him to the vet and he said his dog would have to have a cortisone inj and tabs. As soon as the inj and tabs wore off the rash came back worse than ever! The vet told my friend that his dog would have to be on inj's and tabs for the rest of his life to control the condition, it was an auto immune response. My friend after agonising over the decision, decided to put his dog to sleep! Oh crap . Just because the dog didn't respond to cortisone? No specialist? No nothing else? That is so incredibly sad. My friend held his dog during the injection and said that he felt the spirit leave the body, even b4 the vet had finished giving the lethal injection! I was overwhelmed with sadness when my friend told me all this as I had known his dog since he was a young pup, when he first brought him home! Sorry for the long post but it got me thinking about this situation. He was a beautiful boy and I miss him everyday! XXtoughgirlXXX How awful. I'm so sorry for you, your friend and your friends dog. Shame on that vet, too. Thanks for your reply I couldn't have put him to sleep, but he was my friends dog.... I hope he forgives me. Living with allergies is very hard, on both the dog and the owner and maybe rather than thinking of it in a bad way, you should try to think of it that your friend gave his dog the ultimate gift by setting him free of his constant discomfort. Whilst there are so many success stories out there, and you will read many on here, there are just as many where the battle is continual and money spent hands over fist and all the good intentions in the world don't help. Ptolomy Posted May 4, 2010 Share Posted May 4, 2010 5 weeks ago Beans something unidentified - it was small and I am assuming it was a lamb or beef liver treat (she is highly allergic to both) Within 24 hours she had chewed big holes in her chest inner thigh and foot and she was a mess. On the weekend somebody gave Beans a 20 cent piece of dried beef and before I could do anything it was gone. We rang the Dermatology Department that look after her and they advised to double her morning antihistamine and to give her the same dose at night - so 4 tablets instead of 1 for the next couple of days and to bath her putting QV oil in the water if she chewed holes in herself and I had a script for the sores if needed. So 24 hours, 48 hours, 5 days have gone by with no reaction at all and yes I know we can have a reaction up to 10 days post ingestion, but I am amazed. Other than upping the antihistamine the one difference to her previous meltdown has been the introduction on the Evening Primrose Oil Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
