I think the cost would vary greatly. A specialist is going to charge a lot more than a vet. Some vets do these ops often and do a good job but it is a good idea to be sure you are dealing with someone who really is good at what they do  There are a couple of different ways the surgery is performed as well. Some bandage the wound and some don't.

Price will depend on your local Vet or Specialist doing it, as Gretel already said

Which is best will depend on the size of the dog

How bad the pattella is luxating will also depend on the type of surgery that may be required

Hi APBT

We are going through this at the moment with our toy poodle.

The vet has quoted $800-$1200.

The specialist centre have given a basic quote over the phone of approximately $2000.00

The weight of the dog will impact on the cost I have been told. I assume its due to the amount of anaesthetic required but other more knowledgable than I will be more helpful in this area.

Its worth seeing if more than one patella is luxating. We may need to do both and the specialist centre said it would only be an extra $500.00 if both were done at the same time.

We had this done a while ago and the cost was ~$1000 per knee. this was through our regular vet and was for a 9 kg pug. We had the option of doing them together or one at time, but opted to have them done separately. We did this because if she got an infection it would most likely affect both and leave her unable to walk while it cleared. Its hard enough when they cant use one back leg at a time.

We had no bandages and did not need to use a cone as she never tried to nibble her stiches. The hardest thing was having to keep her quiet for 6 weeks. She was ready to bound around the house the next day !

Every time I see a footballer talk about a knee reconstruction and how long their recovery will be I think they should have it done at the local vet, they'd be chasing a ball the next day :coffee:

I can't remember the cost- it was about 20 years ago! It was done by a specialist.. lots of stitches and bandages ..and a dog who was severely restricted in movement for ages to allow healing... all went very well tho- and no further trouble.:coffee:

Mind you - It's something I wont forget, as I was assisting in a minor way... URK, and OUCH. :o

My new rescue dog (aged 4) has this and my local vet has just quoted me $1200-$1500.

He says its not too bad at the moment but I would rather do it sooner than later.

I will get another quote though just to make sure its the average price

Make sure you get a recommendation for an insurance cover

is it not too late to take out insurance?

I wish I had taken it out a week ago

I doubt you'll find any insurance company that will cover for a pre existing condition

Yes I know that

you see she is still on trial and we've just made the decision to keep her.

I took her to the vet as I noticed she was holding her back leg up.

So I am adopting a dog with a known health problem but she's worth it :)

RMC, what is the rescue group's policy on pre-existing conditions? You should check this out, as the rescue group may pay for the surgery, or might be able to put your dog through their vet and get a discount.

I dont even know if they have a policy. I adopted her on 6 March on a 3 week trial but I have already told them she has

her forever home and wont be going back.

I like the idea of a cheaper vet though I will ask them if their vet could give me a quote

And APBT has just been quoted $600, my dog only weighs 6kg so I think my quote is far too high?

thanks for the advice

yes sydney, and the $600 includes everything, the vet even wants to keep her there for about 2 extra nights after the surgery day just to keep her real quite, and keep an eye on things

That's interesting - my vet said to hold off until it gets bad, because the scarring from sugery causes probs in itself & the procedure would likely lead to early arthritis in the area. We were advised to give joint guard daily, and cartrophen injections every 6 mths (or more frequent if necessary).... It's been 2-3rys of doing this & so far my dog has been great apart from when she does strenuous off-lead running. We know she'll need surgery eventually, but so far so good...

(she had one knee that was rated a 3, and one that was 2/3).
