It wasn't just the sale of the goldfish to an underage child, it was also the untreated broken leg on a parrot.

The law, no matter how silly, is there and she should have checked the childs age.

Oh look, you just cant have great-grandmothers contaminating the bingo halls and wandering the streets .....

Why, this one was even heading off to a Rod Stewart concert  ... can ya believe that?

Ole rockin Roddy, goodness golly me!!!!

The world will definitely be a far safer place when they tag all of the great-grandmothers who have a life and slap a curfew on 'em!

A certain way to reduce the crime rate in Britain ...... soon to be happening in Australia ....... watch this space!

Wrong Souffle. The world will be a better place when that crappy tabloid goes up in flames...or we can start believing the articles in it that great grandmothers have all been abducted by aliens for experiments with probes and slices of cheese that were carved off the moon.

oooh yes, Souff is with Lionheart!

At last! Labour government measures have begun to crack down on crime. Thank God that this obviously very evil person has been nabbed - I will sleep a lot better now that this dangerous yob has been taken off of our streets. I hope now that pensioners using walking sticks should also be fined for carrying illegal weapons with them. They also incur horrific injuries to passers-by with their zimmer frames! These oldie gangs are not to be underestimated. Don't be fooled by pensioners using fake hearing-aids either - they are actually tuned into Al Qaeda mission chiefs, informing them when they should detonate their bombs! We don't have a broken youth problem, we have a broken OAP problem, which is a chilling situation to have to come to terms with. Did you know that a bus pass, if thrown at a certain angle, can maim or even kill? Tag them all, I say. Stop crime - tag a biddy!

More to grandma's story: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/england...ter/8597762.stm

Officials sent the boy in to make a test purchase after receiving a complaint the shop had sold a gerbil to a 14-year-old girl with learning difficulties, who later dropped it into a cup of coffee.

The boy was sold the fish without his age being questioned or providing any information about its care.

An animal welfare officer also noticed a cockatiel in the store that appeared in distress and, when examined, was found to have a broken leg and eye problem.

Higgins was fined £1,000 and ordered to stay in her house between 1800 BST and 0700 BST.

Her son Mark Higgins, 47, who manages the shop, also admitted causing unnecessary suffering and was fined £750 and ordered to carry out 120 hours of community work.

The case led to a series of national newspaper headlines bemoaning "Big Brother" snooping by local authorities.

But Jonathan Coupe, executive councillor at Trafford Council, said on Wednesday he "wanted to set a few facts straight".

He said the "main reason we took this prosecution was because the pet shop owner had caused unnecessary suffering to a cockatiel".

Trafford Council had already warned the store about not supplying care information to customers, he added.

"Magistrates felt the sentence they imposed reflected the level of cruelty caused to the animal."

And the magistrates didnt have the power to close the business altogether? :driving:

Cruelty to animals in a pet shop should not be tolerated. Fine them and because of the cruelty and the other offences, SHUT THE PLACE DOWN!

But to put a curfew on the woman is absurd.

What dastardly deeds do they think she does at night?

Is she sneaking around in the dark breaking the legs of cockatiels?

Or tapping on sleeping children's windows trying to sell them goldfish or gerbils?

Imposing silly sentences like this one is making a mockery out of an otherwise good justice system.
