Recommended Boarding Kennels (sydney)

Hi everyone,

I am looking for a boarding kennel- does anyone have any recommendations?

We need to place our Japanese Spitz puppy for 2 weeks over the October school holidays.

Here's my experiences so far- please let me know if you have dealt with any of these places or any other place you might recommend!

1. Hanrob: We were recommended to Hanrob by our vet. I emailed them 2 months ago and never even got a reply. My husband ended up calling them and got quite a bit of information. Whilst I thought the $35 a day was quite reasonable- I was not happy that playtime etc is extra. They only include in 15 minutes as standard package and anything else after that was extra... I know they are good but it just seemed really expensive. For the amount of time we need to board Codi it took the cost up to nearly $900!

2. Calabash @ Arcadia: Heard great things about this place so I did a google search. Was quite happy that it's close to my mum's in case of emergencies. Emailed and got response straight away so made an appointment to go and see the place last Saturday. Got there at 1:30 and was in and out by 1:40. I felt like we were being rushed through and didn't really get much information other than being shown around. I was given some brochures at the end and told to call if I wanted to book.

3. Pet Resort Australia @ Dural: Don't know much about this place but came across it during my internet search. On our way home from Arcadia I gave them a call and they were happy for me to drop in. Again, quite please that it is close to my mum's. The people there were friendly and I was surprised that it was the cheapest so far of the places I found. It also included playtime and grooming. Only thing I was worried about was that there were kennels with 3- 4 dogs sharing. I was told they would try and pair my dog up and if he didn't like any of the dogs he would board on his own with no extra cost.

4. Nalla @ Luddenham: Came across this place on the internet- emailed them and got a reply about 2 days later. I just emailed back to see if I can go and see the place on the weekend and haven't heard back yet... Website looks good but not too many photos of the place.

Would really appreciate anyone's input out there!

Thanks!

PAX on this forum

I am picky about where I send my dogs as one is dog aggro, one has allergies and I compete with one - and PAX is great :D

HAHAHA!

Well my dog is a bit of a "snob" being a Jap Spitz... He is very well socialised but just seems to not like particular dogs... (gets on well with mu Cavalier that stays at mum's and other dogs at puppy school- but HATES my friend's French Bull Dog and other Staffy breeds he has met at dog parks. :S)

Tell me more about PAX?

Hehehe, yes we're in Sydney! We live near Greystanes... I have been searching for other Japanese Spitzs for playdates... Surely Codi can't be a snob to his own kind? Lol.

My Cavalier lives with mum in the Hills... I didn't take her when I moved out as my new house has no yard and she grew up there with a big backyard. Not to mention mum would be lonely without her.

Hmm, must find out more about PAX?

I was also recommended getting someone to come and house sit and mind the dog... I have to say I wasn't entirely comfortable with the idea of someone in my home for 2 weeks though?

Can you leave Codi at your mum's place?

Can you leave Codi at your mum's place?

I normally would- but we are actually going overseas with my mum as well!

My Cavalier will be with my grandparents' (She's 9 now- so she won't get up to much mischief!) but can't leave Codi there!

You could always look into having a pet sitter - either one that lives overnight in your home, or alternatively board with one of the carers in their home. For more information check out www.petsitaus.com.au. I am a pet sitter for them in Adelaide but they also have carers in Sydney. If you have any queries call Kerry and she can give you some great advice. She's the owner and very experienced in dog behaviour. Good luck!

Hmm I suppose I will keep looking.

Not sure if we want to go with a pet sitter... My husband was a little uncomfortable with that idea.

Keep the suggestions coming though! I don't know where else to look as I have never had to use a boarding kennel before!

No chance the breeder could look after your pup? I often have mine come back for holidays

I haven't asked actually... Though maybe not such a bad idea. In fact I might see who she would recommend...

Thanks Gretel!

We've used Greg a couple of times and been really really pleased with him:

Barkshire Dog & Cat Boarding Kennels

Dog Boarding Kennels - Berkshire Park, NSW

Thank you for the recommendation. I will check it out.

The most important thing imo when looking for a boarding kennel, is to see if they will let you have an inspection of the facilities (without a prior appointment).

You can then go and look and see what you think.

I would not use hanrob as they sometimes put two dogs in the same run (not good if your dog is DA). I have heard this can happen even if you pay for an individual run.

A company called positive puppies does boarding- it is really good because your dog actually stays in the owners home. She has a lab of her own and takes around 6-7 dogs. I have found her puppy classes very good and she is an experienced dog trainer and used to train guide dogs.

It is not really in your area though

here's the website if you want further info though

I have used Calabash a few times for Heidi. Yes, they do get you in and out quickly when going out to inspect premises. I must admit, I was left feeling a little 'put out' by this, but owner did explain that she didn't want to unsettle all the dogs by taking guests through.. and I did understand that this must happen so often for them. Regardless though, it's nice to be able to view a little bit more.

Other than that, I made a booking, because they are very professional, look after animals very well, with good staff, and provide all the necessities that my dog needed to stay happy and healthy. They were very thorough with instructions, and Heidi came out looking fabulous. I am also very picky when it comes to boarding, due to bad experience in the past with other kennels out Dural way... not with my current dog.

PAX sounds fabulous,,,,, I will be looking her up...peace of mind is so important.

Thanks for the recommendations, I had a look at the website and although they sound fabulous I think the cost might be just a bit too much for 2 weeks... I am quite happy to take my dog wherever he will be happiest but still need to try and budget around the holiday too!

Oh no, which boarding kennel did you have a bad experience with at Dural?

Calabash did look very professional- but yes my experience was very similar to yours!
