"A FIRE that caused about $2.5 million damage to a City Farmers store in Wembley early this morning is believed to have been deliberately lit.

Fire crews spent several hours containing the blaze, which was reported to authorities shortly after 1am.

The arson squad has inspected the site and believe the fire was suspicious and deliberately lit.

The fire forced several road closures, including parts of Selby St, Flynn St, Herdsman Pde and Dunblane Rd.

City Farmers Wembley is on the corner of Flynn and Selby streets. The store stocks pet, garden and pool care supplies.

Most stock was destroyed by the blaze. Live display fish and birds were killed in the fire.

There was no reported damage to any of the neighbouring buildings.

No homes or lives were affected by the fire. There is still light smoke in the area and residents are asked to be on alert and relocate if they are experiencing any breathing difficulties.

FESA is urging people in the area to stay inside their homes away from the smoke and to close all doors and windows and switch off airconditioners.

A FESA spokesman said unfavourable weather conditions had fanned the blaze.

There are no more road closures, but motorists are also encouraged to avoid the area and use alternative transport routes until the smoke clears.

A City Farmers franchising spokesman, who did not wish to be named, said the 22 staff who worked at the store would be relocated to the firm's other 13 stores in Perth.

"I feel pretty devastated, for the people who work here and the customers who shop here," he said.

"There's a lot of very passionate people who work and buy in this industry. It's like taking a big chunk out of your life.

"To most people this isn't a job, it's a lifestyle.''"

It now transpires the place was also robbed the night before the fire was They were interviewing a staff member and he was saying that 4 of the animals lost were "store pets" so that was thier home.....one of them had made a huge banner with the names of the deceased animals on it
