New Puppy Owner - Tips?

I really don't think taking him to the toilet after asleep for only 40 minutes is going to work lol. You are never going to get any sleep, ignore that for a while and see what happens. He has a puppy pad in there if he needs to go, even though you are not making a fuss of him he is still getting attention.

Crate training is a great tool, all mine sleep in their crates for the first few months, they learn to love them and even now if I leave a crate open on the floor the adults will go to sleep in there. I never travel anywhere without my dogs in crates, it's safe and comfortable for them. There are lots of hints on here for crate training, I personally put their bedding in it, leaving the door open during the day then at night puppy goes in with a toy and chewy with the door shut. Doesn't take long for them to learn, all you need is to be more determined then the pup.

Yeah, that is what I was worried about, even though I'm not playing with him he is still getting attention.

I think the little bugger has started fake peeing as well. He gets into position and acts like he is going but I'm pretty sure he hasn't. So I've started checking afterwards to see if he actually went before giving him praise.

oooh, post 13, what a little darling.

I've got nothing of use to add apart from that, I just did trial and error with house dogs as all previous dogs were outside. Read all I could, tried what suited me and if it didn't work tried something else. My first girl never cried, just woke up in the night and stared at me. Lots of little accidents though. I also didn't take dogs out in the middle of the night - we went out before my (our) bedtime and first thing in the morning - lots of paper spread around in case. That worked for her, didn't work for later dog. He took a long time to get the hang of "toilet outside" (and he'd had pad training before I got him, both dogs chewed 'em up in my house).

Oh, the girl especially used to do an excitement wee at first when I came home (I was temping at work, so that was on and off).

His toilet training seems to be coming along, most times I can take him out and say "go wee" and he will go. He seems to be making a habit of pooing right near our back steps so I'm working on breaking that out of him.

Last night he barely cried at all. It was bliss. He'd cry for about a minute each time we put him back in his pen but that was it.

I've got a couple of problems at the moment I'm trying to work out the best approach for.

1) Chewing, he loves to chew things, I've taken most things out of his reach now but he seems to like chewing our shorts when we sit on the ground. When he does this I say no and move him away and give him a chew toy. I've read that feeding them their daily meals through a Kong can help promote the correct chewing (eg. on their toys). I've started doing this today. On the plus side, at least he is actually eating his food now.

2) Humping. Just yesterday he has started humping a stuffed monkey we gave him. It is a little bit smaller than him and he likes to wrestle/chew/tear it apart. But now he has started humping it as well. I thought he was a little young for that. I've never owned a male dog before. Is this something that will stop when he is desexed (at around 6 months, which is 4 months away). Is there something I can do to discourage the behaviour?

3) Eating. We were told to feed him 3 meals a day but he doesn't seem to want to eat them. He will graise on his food eating it now and then, he likes to pick up the pieces and walk off with them and eat them somewhere else then go back to his bowl. This morning in an attempt to get him to chew on his toys more rather than our stuff I packed his kong full of his breakfast. He has been eating it quite well from the kong. I think the fun of playing with it combined with the pay off of food falling out does it for him. He doesn't have to chew though as the dry biscuits just fall out when he rolls it so not sure if it will actually help him with his chewing.

On another note, I stuffed his kong full of natural peanut butter, liver treats and dry biscuits yesterday and he didn't touch it. I suspect he didn't like the peanut butter as I know he liked everything else that was in there. I've tried him with Kraft's peanut butter and he loved that. Is there a problem giving them something like Kraft's peanut butter over an all natural one?

Thor is going well, he is a cute little guy.

One weird thing which I'm not sure how to handle. He has started barking at me when I wash my hands in the bathroom. I ignore him when I do this (should I rouse on him?).

What is also weird is a couple of times when I wash my hands in the bathroom he barks at me and then goes to the toilet on the floor (poo or wee, he has done both). I assume he is getting excited and loosing control of his bladder.

How do I get him used to me washing my hands?

LOL now I will admit that I've never had that problem before. Hehehe ask Shilo (you did get the puppy from her?) You could try not to let him into the bathroom with you. Mine are all used to going to toilet on paper, now I only have mine left I must remember DONT LEAVE THE TV PAPER ON THE FLOOR!!! Oh well tomorrows paper will have the telly guide in it lol.

so just leaving the tap on and ignoring him isn't the right course?

His toilet training is still ongoing. He makes mistakes but he tries to tell us that he needs to go sometimes. When he is locked in his pen he uses his puppy mat flawlessly. He has full access to his pen when he is out of it but he doesn't use it.

Well, we've had little Thor a week now and I'm very proud of the little guy. For such a small puppy he has been very well behaved.

For the past couple of days when in his pen he has flawlessly used his puppy pad. So we decided to try not waking up for him over night. The past two nights we've done this and we haven't heard a peep from him all night. The first night he used his puppy pad and last night he just held it! We put him in his pen at 10:30 and I took him out at 6am to pee.

The little guy has been crying the last half an hour though. I think he has gotten into the habit of me waking at 6am and thinking it is play time (as I take him out straight away on week days so I can have time to play before work. We will just ignore him until he settles down)

We invited a couple of kids over yesterday to play with him and he was great with them. We then had a BBQ to socialise him with some adults which he also handled really well.

Next weekend we are taking him to a kids birthday party which will have 20+ kids 7yrs and under so hopefully that will help with his kid socialisation.

So all in all, it has been a tough week at times ignoring his crying even though it was upsetting it has been paying off.

Thank you so much for all your advice and support!! I very much appreciate it.

I'm glad to hear that Thor is settling into your routine, he will soon get used to the change of the weekends, after all it's only been a week. I would be very careful with him at the birthday party, wow, 20 kids under 7 will be a bit overwhelming for him I should imagine. You will have to make sure they don't all rush him at the same time. It could startle him & make him scared. I agree he needs to experience all things & humans that he will come into contact with him for the rest of his life. But take it carefully.

Look forward to more updates & photos.

Yeah, we will be careful with him and make sure he only has a couple of kids at a time with him. We don't want to accidentally make cause him to have a fear of children.

Well, Thor is doing quite well. He seems to be a happy, content little guy and is quite well behaved (I'm actually surprised, I thought he'd be causing more trouble).

Anyway, I'm trying to find him a puppy pre-school.

He is 10wks tomorrow. I'm considering two places for puppy pre-school.

The first one doesn't start until the 23/02 (which will make him 13weeks when he starts). This place sounds really good though http://www.cleardogtraining.com/

The second one starts 14/02 which will make him 11wks when he starts, they also sound good but I don't think the trainer is a full-time dog trainer as the e-mail she provided is for a different business.

I want to take him to the first one but I'm worried if 13 weeks is too late?

Puppies really shouldn't be out and about until they are 12 weeks old and have had their vaccinations so the first one is just right. I always tell my puppy buyers to wait until then before they start puppy training. Even at 13 weeks he is still a baby.

Thanks, so it won't be a disadvantage to start him at 13 weeks?

We have already started obedience training with him at home and he is responding well. I was more worried from a socialisation point of view. My brother has a 10yr old Staffy whose shots are up to date so I was thinking of trying to socialise the little guy with her while waiting for puppy preschool to start.

Would that be a good idea?

Not sure the staffy would be a good choice, even if she wanted to play at 10 year old it only takes a second for her to pick him up and shake him breaking his neck, PLEASE be careful they are so fragile at this age. Don't you know of anyone with a small breed puppy for him to play with? Mine plays with our sheltie but only under strict supervision.

Yeah, I was worried about the Staffy which is why I thought I'd ask first.

Unfortunately I don't know anyone with a puppy (small or large). The only other person I know with a dog who has their shots up to date is a 2yr old Border Collie.

Another option is to take him to my local pet shops puppy pre-school as well. It only costs $50 and from what they told me it is just a session to let the puppies play with one another. From the sounds of it they don't do any training in these sessions, it is just a play date.

Also these guys (http://www.teamworkdogs.com.au/?page_id=12) run a free session in a local park for young puppies to socialise. Maybe I should look at that?

Lol I hate to put a damper on your plans but not sure about the pet shop either, so many puppies from these places have temperament problems and diseases. Lots of them come from puppy factories! If you are really desperate then the border collie would do under strong supervision but if I was you I would wait until the 24th. I find that males seem to be more tolerant then bitches of puppies.

Well, if he is fine to wait until the 24th I'm happy to wait. I was just worried about leaving things too long and missing any critical periods for socliasation. Thanks for your help :)

The puppy pre-schools that I know of take pups from 8 - 16 weeks old the reason being they are all in the same boat re vaccinations. Tilba was 11w5d old when I got her & a little over 12 weeks when she started kindy. Even though she'd had 2 vaccinations I used to carry her around when on outings until she had her 3rd. It didn't stop me from taking her places.

I met this fellow http://www.cleardogtraining.com/ at a conference in 2004. From the website it looks like a good kindy.

Thanks, I think I will go with them. I've talked to them a couple of times and read their website and they sound quite good. I've also found a lot of good reviews for them online.
