Kaffy Magee Posted April 14, 2011 Share Posted April 14, 2011 Nightgrace all my dobes grew up with cats yet chased them and would have killed them had they caught them I also found they werent as careful around my little dogs.I know dobes can live with cats and small dogs but I'd trust my bullmastiffs before I would trust a dobe with a cat. I have 4 bullmastiffs and sometimes of a night I have all four sleeping in the laundry with my 2.3 kg papillon curled up amongst them They are all very good with both my cats (I think it helps to have cats that are not easily intimidated by dogs and run on sight of them) and the little dogs. One day she went off her food, the next day tests were done and a tumor on her spleen was found. The following week, it was the end she was still so playful and spirited. Lulu was great around our littlies and cats. She slept with our chis. they used to really put her in her place as a pup. Then one day when she was about 1 yr old, it's as if she realised that if she pressed them, they would run. And run they did! She chased, and it was on But in our eyes, she could do no wrong- she was too lovable. We managed with time sharing No matter what breed we decide on, training is a must! Socialization is a must! But they would have to be scootas best mate. That's going to be a challenge as I think we fluked it with the compatibility of the pair. Scoota was meant to be a two week foster. We put Lu and scoot together and they ran at each other. They took each other down like they were going to kill one another but they were playing! Best of friends ever since. I would like to get a rescue especially from a Place like campbelltown pound ( its so sad and depressing for the dogs there) but at the same time he or she will need fit in with our WHOLE fam and that's a big ask :S it may be a bit of a stressful situation for a 4 yr old lab...or any other dog with a tricky history. Scootas a rescue and loves me, my hubby and our cats and dogs but children and tall men terrify him. His background is unknown but lucky for me I didnt have kids when I decided to foster him from blacktown pound. I would hate to bring in a rescue only to traumatized them more! I do mix them but only under supervision and I have had the odd incident, not due to any form of aggression but rather the aussies just not aware of the size difference. Keep your eye out in the local paper - I don't know whether you know but each week in the Chronicle they have a 'Dog of the Week' and every weke if you look in there you might come across scootas soul mate! I also understand that you wouldnt want to traumatize them. I think they best thing in a situation is to take the dog to your house for a few hours and see how they go - Im pretty sure the pound is actually reasonably flexible on that sort of thing Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

She has a very soft and submissive personality but she still plays very rough. She has been well socialised with small dogs and gets along fine with them, but when excited she is too boisterous. They love life and are so full of life, leaping round and wrestling but there just doesn't seem to be the awareness of avoiding jumping on or banging into other dogs - or people for that matter. murve Posted April 15, 2011 Share Posted April 15, 2011 Have you thought about a Whippet, they are gentle, love going for walks or even trot beside a bike, can live with cats, very short coat, mine spend at least 19hours a day asleep. sandgrubber Posted April 15, 2011 Share Posted April 15, 2011 If you're rescue oriented, I'd say choose your shelter carefully, and make sure the one you go to understands your situation and will allow you to return the dog and get another if the first choice doesn't work out quickly. I'd say there are dogs of lots of breeds . . . and mixed breeds . . . that could work for you. If you're doing a rescue, go for a dog that touches your heart strings and don't worry about breed. But the cat didnt like her.Do consider a rescue dog as so many larger breeds are P.T.S because they are harder to rehome than the little ones. You should be able to see how the dog is with cats and small dogs at the pound. pointers are active outdoors and can chill out inside when given adequate exercise..Also i agree with labradors or golden retriever. There is a lab x pointer ?? at Campbelltown pound also look at showdog.com. breed selector.Have found this one to be very good. Sabby Posted June 2, 2011 Author Share Posted June 2, 2011 Hi again, It's taken us a while but just letting everyone know that we found our perfect puppy- so far! We haven't brought her home yet but she's met our 2 chihuahuas and our wolfie x. We also saw her led through the cattery on lead (where she tried to hide from all the cats!) We decided on getting a rescue doggy:) It was alot easier to find a friend for scoota by allowing him to play with them. He totally ignored boxer puppies that we went to meet! We took him to meet some greyhounds but Lthough they ran with him, they didn't wrestle. Our rescue ran straight at him! She's looks like a staffi x only bigger and scruffier. They called her a wolfie x but hmmm I don't really think so...;) She's about 12months old and her name is tiger lily. We'll have to christen her another name as our cats name is Lily Thanks again for all your help everyone!! I'll be sure to put some photos up!!
