Vaccination Schedule For Show Puppies... Any Different?

Hi all.

Probably been done to death but....

Im really paranoid about parvo and wanted to know if people that show their puppies from 12 weeks have a different vaccination schedule to a pup that wont be going out at all. I am aware that most dog show grounds do have parvo on them.

Do many people wait till 2 weeks after the last Vac to show?

Has anyone had a show pup catch parvo from a show ground (Sydney in particular).

Thanks in advance.

Halo had her last vacc at 12 weeks which was actually a week before she was three months old. I waited two weeks, but if there'd been a show in Adelaide the weekend before she had her first show I would have taken her out then.

Thanks for the reply... Did she have a course of 2 or 3 vac's? She obviously survived

My pup had vaccs at 6 10 14 weeks.. Her last vacc left her with a HUGE bump on her back before her first show, I wouldn't taken her at 12 if I had had her papers by then. In saying that, my girl picked up kennel cough but a strain that you can't vaccinate against from her first show but I would've taken her again if I had another chance because her case was extremely mild. I am a paranoid puppy mother so I know how you feel but I THINK it should be fairly safe

My pups had vaccs at 8 and 12 weeks. Their first show is 2 weeks after their 12 week vacc, so worked out nicely.

One puppy I did take to the show a few days after his 12 week vacc to meet a family who are now going to take him home soon, but I didn't put him on the grass juuuuust in case.

She had two vaccs. I had her out and about before her second vaccs too - my older dog does obedience, so she came along and wasn't put down obviously, but she got to get used to the sights and sounds, and I took her for her first walk around the streets at 13 weeks old, a week after her final vaccs. Either us or our older dog could have easily contaminated things anyway because Akira doing obedience and agility goes to areas that would be contaminated. IMO socialisation is more important than parvo risk, we obviously do things to minimise the risk but I wanted to get her out and about.

I thought because all dogs on our grounds SHOULD be safe as all dogs should be vaccinated and healthy - people shouldnt be taking sick dogs to shows... Well thats my thoughts anyway.

I have shown / taken 12 week old babies in the past to the shows and not had anything pop up - touch wood!

I think in NSW you go to different showgrounds - which are everyday parks for some shows (correct me if im wrong), so I guess thats where you may have the concern.

I give one vaccination at 8 weeks and then titre, if the titre levels are correct then the dog is never vaccinated again.

It is most important that the antibodies passed on from the bitch are at a low, or the vaccine won't work.

That means that pups that are still nursing off their mothers at the time of vaccination may, in some cases, still be receiving anti bodies

through the dams milk, as some dams have been found not to switch off, thus preventing the vaccination from working.

To make sure this does not happen at Oakway I remove all bitches from their pups at 6 weeks.

Litter vaccinated at 7 weeks, after most were sold, I had my girl & one who was to be collected at 9 and a half weeks. During that period both pups went everywhere with me, being carried.

When the pups were about 11 weeks, shortly before the 2nd/final vaccine I had two come to stay with me. I took all 3 to two shows (1 at Bulla and one at KCC and they were in a pen, on grass etc (I asked permission of the owners before doing it), I also walked them around the shows on lead etc (and they joined in an impromptu puppy play group!!).

My girl was shown at Lancefield oval (public park) just after turning 3 months of age, but had been to shows almost weekly.

Whenever we buy a pup they come to shows and sit in a pen/ walk around as soon as possible.

Yep, it's a risk but I weigh up the dangers of a disease vs an unsocialised pup.

Sounds pretty normal to me. .

Shows that have micro chipping and vaccination days, you see whole litter going in to be vaccinated.

I would have thought that show grounds were one of the safest places to go to. How many un vaccinated dogs go to shows?.

None that I am aware of, as we value our dogs to much to take them to shows un vaccinated.

I agree 100%... i recently was judged quite harshly by a fellow breeder/EXIB caus ei took my 8 and a half week old baby to a show and let her on the grass to lead train in the ring at lunch... i think A... i need her used to the hustle and bussle of the ring and surounds and B... she needs to be well socialised... she had one vacc at this point... but i was carefull and she had a great time! she will be at show training for her first class tomorrow night! at 9 weeks old!!

Thanks for all your replies.

Re: All dogs at show grounds being vaccinated, I was going through past threads and noticed that there have been confirmed cases of parvo (2008 was the last one i saw, not sure about cases since then) at Erskine Park and other dog specific show grounds... Hence the worry of taking a young pup to the grounds.

You would've taken a dog with kennel cough to a show and shown it?

I didn't think you were allowed to show a dog that was sick at all.

I vaccinate at 8 and 12 weeks.

My pups travel to between my house and my mothers house before and after their first vacc. However I make sure it's been at least 4 days since their 12 weeks vacc before taking them out and about to shows etc.

I think the best way to socialise show puppies is to visit other breeder/friends in their homes. That way they can meet other breeds and other positive people. It is a mini version of the show atmosphere, not overwhelming, and you minimise the risk of disease. Vets tend to suggest later and later ages for pups to mix freely which makes good socialisation impossible, but it is pretty unwise to take big chances with a pup who may be the pick of the litter from a long awaited mating.

I think the grounds at the shows especially the fixed grounds, eg Erskine Park and KCC park are not suitable for puppies prior to 12-13 weeks.

I had a friend who had a 12 week old pup in her first show, and the pup picked up kennel cough, and now has had to been kept at home while it cleared up. This was only a month ago.

No the pup must have been older, you cannot show a dog under 3 calendar months.

12 weeks is 3 months. It was the pups first show she was 12 weeks and 3 days.

12 weeks is kind of 3 months but not really '3 months' if you know what I mean.

My pups were born on Jan 28th. They were 12 weeks old on April 22nd, but not 3 calendar months old until April 28th.

Show age classes work on calendar months.
