Even if she has OCD, chances are you will still be able to trampse round the countryside

One of Min's friends a lab also, had severe bilateral ED, had surgery and is now able to go on fairly long walks.

Staranais girl I think had shoulder OCD or some kind of shoulder surgery and is training to be a SAR dog!!!

Well..we went to the doggy chiropracter last night (there is actually one in our town) She wasn't limping in the morning before I went to work, but my husband let her play when he got home, and by the time I took her to the chiro, she was limping badly. (Husband has since been severely spoken too).

Chiro couldn't really find anything apart from the shoulder muscle being sore, and something happening up between the shoulder blades. He reckons it's muscle....he did some work with his 'thumper' thing, she still limped badly and now this morning she seems much better again. Always better in the morning, I gues after sleeping all night. I am going to keep her in the laundry over the weekend so she can't move about.

We also have a dog physio in town as well, so that is our next step.

Hi

Rest rest and more rest. We have been resting our pup in a crate now for 3 weeks walking only on lead and she is almost 100%. On the weekend we let her off lead for a run around supervised to make she she didn't jump off anythign stupid or go up the 2 tiny stairs we have. I also put rapidgel on her muscles before i let her off to warm them up a bit so far so good seh got an hour off lead this morning and no limping. Its painfully slow but so far its paying off.

Keeping a puppy confined and quiet is hard. We have recently gone through this when our 12 week old puppy fratured her elbow and required surgery.

We crated her when we where out and at night, she was only allowed in a confined area inside under supervision and outside on a lead only.

I am sure days keeping your puppy quiet will make a massive difference.

Well, she is going in for xrays on Friday. The lady I spoke to at the vets, said there was a note on her records about something going on with an elbow joint....they didn't tell me that at the time.

Rest is definately the answer.

Good luck Hunny. I know how stressfull it is. Touch wood our pup is goiong ok no limping for a week now but i'm going to continue to rst her for at least another week. She now gets outside off lead for an hour in the morning and an out in the night so far so good still not allowed with the big dogs i want ot make sure shes really strong. I think she has enjoyed this and has now unofficially become a house dog which is a secret between my daughter myself and the pup don't tell hubby.... he thinks its temporary.

Did the vet give your puppy any anti-inflammatories at all ??

You could also try some rapid gel......its like deep heat, but for animals and massage it in to the shoulder area.

Lab pups play rough and injuries can happen very quickly.

As has been suggested, your pup needs plenty of rest. That is why she is better in the mornings after having rested all night.

I had a bitch fracture her foot and tore a cruciate (well actually another of my labs grabbed her leg whilst playing). She was possibly pregnant at the time and had to have her leg splinted as they could not operate at the time just in case.

She was pregnant, so the specialist said it would make no difference to wait it out and then operate later.

Took her back after she had the pups to find out the next step and the specialist was happy with how it had healed and said no operation would be needed.

Good luck and I do hope that it is nothing serious. :)

Woodbyne, I think I may be working along the same lines...inside doggy! Would be all okay if only she stopped trying to get our old pussy cat to play!

MissMonaro, no they didn't give me anything, didn't really tell me anything about from resting her. It's only from this forum that I even realised about crating etc and the extent to what 'resting' really meant. I've just dropped her off this morning for her xrays, and a different vet checked her leg again. She thinks it's definately in the elbow :( . Anyway, will soon find out.

Good luck!

Let me know if you need any tips for resting. When my puppy was 12 weeks she fractured her front left elbow and required surgury - so 'çonfinement' was a must!

When she came back after the surgery I was soooo stressed....as I could not keep her still. I went away for work for a few days in that first week, which was a good thing, otherwise I think I would have had a nervous breakdown.

It has been 6 weeks and she had her final vet visit this morning and now has the all clear - we can now get back to "normal". Yeah!!

Well, xrays have not come up with anything, although the vet did say that a particular kind of fracture in the elbow may not show on there. They did mention 'growing pains' (??) especially as she's such a big, solid puppy. And because she is so big (everyone comments on her size), she is on a course of Cartrophyn as a precuation...and more rest of course.

At the moment we have her in the laundry when we are not here, and in the house when we are, and fully supervised of course as she chews everything. When we are at work we'll leave her in the laundry as well and the boss has said I can take a longer lunch (only get 30mins) to come home and take her outside. I am still working on hubby to get a pen, so she can be confined on the back verandah as well.

Hunny - whereabouts in WA are you - are you in Perth because I would jump into the WA thread and find out a chiro, bowen or physio and have it looked at. My 3 year old BC has had on-going front end lameness - been through xrays and ultrasound and the likely explanation is biceps tendonitis. Given your guy is still a baby you really want to get onto it and if xrays have shown up nothing then its likely to be muscular but it might still need treatment other than rest. Its amazing what else gets thrown out of wack when they are carrying an injury.

Thanks Ness! Nope, not in Perth.. we have found the local dog chiro who did his best with a wriggly puppy, but said he didn't really like treating puppies (he is a people chiro predominantly)...however I am going to ring up the dog physio that we have in town and give that a go as well.

She has taken to being an 'laundry dog' very well! The big test will be tomorrow when we go back to work though...I just hope she comes good, I hate to think of her limping her way through life.
