Puppy Playing Rough With Kitten

Chester seems to think our kitten is a puppy and plays rough with her. They chase each other around, tumble over each other, nip each other, puppy barks at her with his bum in the air and tail wagging, kitten meows and swipes at him with her paws when she's had enough and if she's really had enough of him she'll jump up the back of the couch where he can't get to her! Is it ok for them to play like this?

Thanks :)

Perfectly normal - and fantastic - for both of them. They'll each learn boundaries from the other - and work out how far they can go - when to pull the teeth and claws back etc. All a part of the continuing socialisation process. Congratulations on your new puppy by the way :D

I just today noticed how rough my 11month old Chihuahua and 6.5/7 week old kitten play together. Bertie (Chi) bats kitten quite heavily with his paw, kitten doesn't seem to mind...

Besides, kitten has plenty of hiding places Bertie can't get to.

Even when kitten has had enough and arches back/swipes at Bertie, claws are in. Very proud of the tiny kitten!

As long as the cat is able to get to a safe place when its had enough, it should be fine. :)

Sounds so very cute!!!

My dog is terrified of my cat, she will give up her huge dog bed if the cat decides she wants to sleep on it.

Just one note of caution - you need to be very careful that the cat doesn't (deliberately or accidentally) scratch puppy's eye. If it did happen, it's a major vet emergency - big infection risk.

That said - I agree - as long as the cat can always get away - it's lovely.

If you think either one of them is getting too rough, then you need to step in and give a time out,

I'll be the downer on all the fun.

I'd be supervising them both, you have a kitten whose bones aren't as strong as your puppy (who is a large breed). The kitten can also damage your dog during rough play (cat bites/scratches contain a lot of bacteria)

You have a pup who will grow into a big dog, so I would stop him NOW from playing with your cat so roughly.

Teach the pup that the kitten is not a play toy, and that they can play together without going crazy. It's probably fun to watch now, but having a full grown dog running around doing the same thing is a recipe for potential disaster.

Have him on a leash when they play so you can control the interaction and stop it from getting rough. He will learn pretty quickly if you step in and stop the rough and tumble bits.

Always start out as you mean to go on. :D
