It talked about dangerous and threatening dogs, no mention of Pit Bulls or any other breeds. Just said to call if you felt threatened by a particular dog. I just hope that this doesn't inspire a rash of malicious ones, from people who don't like their neighbours, don't like any dogs, or don't like living next door to a certain breed... This ^. Why do the Govt seem to use the word "education" but then don't seem to do anything about promoting it? Not just now, but in numerous things that have been occurring over the years. Quite a few people will cross the street to avoid walking past my three Deerhounds (who are all on lead, under control and very sedate). Do these people may "feel threatened" by my dogs? I meet plenty of people through work that don't have a clear idea of what to do if a dog threatens or attacks them - in fact there was an article in our paper this week about it. *digs* http://www.townsvillebulletin.com.au/article/2011/09/17/267271_news.html With legitimate attacks occurring, the council MUST be notified so action can be taken, otherwise these attacks are simply going to keep on happening. I agree there are some idiots out there who are going to overreact, but a responsible owner should have nothing to fear. Hopefully, this isn't about vengeful neighbours or those who are doing the right thing - this is about unrestrained dogs, dogs acting threateningly. They may have changed it, or there may be a couple of versions. People have always had the option of calling the council if they have a dog complaint, or putting their complaint in writing. If the councils had acted on all of the complaints that have been made previously, maybe we wouldn't be in the mess we are in at the moment. And if the councils actually policed people having their dogs offlead in areas where they must be on lead, a lot less trouble would have evolved too. I agree, the other day when I was walking my staffy in an on lead area, a man with an offlead dog came up to me and asked why I had her on the lead! I just replied "umm, I don't want to get a fine" and he said I could always just run away if a council worker said anything to me! If the present Council by-laws regarding dog management were policed, then there'd be less mess & less of authorities going off in the wrong direction. Those basic dog management laws should be 'over-taught' to the public.....to both dog owners & others as well. I notice the Brisbane Council registration renewal notice, always has the basic things you must do with your dog, in pictorial form across the bottom. With a more comprehensive, but still succinct, summary on the back. Possibly people's eyes just slide off these reminders.....so all other ways, like using radio, TV, local newspaper etc could keep them in the public mind. Interestingly, tho', the people getting their registration renewal might not be the audience who need the message most. I read a US study that found dogs becoming involved in serious problems, were most likely from owners who didn't register their dogs. I can just imagine know-alls who know bugger all ringing in and reporting a particular dog breed when in fact they're reporting the WRONG breed! This just happened to a lady I know who has 2 chocolate Labs, both are fantastic well socialised and obedient pedigree Labs and she had the council called on her whilst she was down the beach because someone thought her dogs were pit bulls because of the colour of their noses. I think everybody no matter what their dog breed is needs to behave responsible, and take responsibility for their dog's behaviour.
