charley101 Posted December 9, 2011 Share Posted December 9, 2011 Hi There I have been thinking for a while now about getting a second small dog but cannot decide on which breed so i thought i would put it out to the universe and see what you guys thought I would like a dog is smart that can handle small amounts of agility, dancing, obedience (no competitions just for fun) so no precious paws (my current dog is a little precious when walking on mulch and wet grass etc) I dont like yappy dogs but can handle a small amount of barking if there is a reason for it My current dog gets anxious around dogs he doesnt know so a confident breed would be good but not too over the top so what do you think ?? Esky the husky Posted December 9, 2011 Share Posted December 9, 2011 Wow you've got a whole world of choice there. :p The first thing that popped into my head reading this was a Japanese Spitz. Some people on DOL do dancing and other sports with them. They are spitz breeds though and sometime you have to be creative with your training. redial Posted December 9, 2011 Share Posted December 9, 2011 A Papillon, some JRT's can be good although they can be very high energy, border terrier or australian terrier (although I don't know much about their dancing ability hehe), poodles would be fantastic! Roova Posted December 9, 2011 Share Posted December 9, 2011 English Toy Terriers could fit that criteria. They seem to have a lot of get up and go, are intelligent and can do well at agility. There's a DOLer with one, I found the thread where she has pictures (its about half way down). I believe she does agility with hers too. becks Posted December 9, 2011 Share Posted December 9, 2011 I do all that (apart from dancing, but we do trick training) with my mini schnauzers, they are a very smart and versatile breed. Being a spitz you will have to work on the recall off lead but low barking (just yodeling screaming hellos when you get home) and smart if you can outthink them. I can definately imagine one sitting on my feet in the winter I have looked a Papillons and love the beautiful butterfly ears, they are certainly quick and smart so are on my list Keep the suggestions coming We have 3 Paps & yes they are the BC of the toys :D, great social furkids, love being around other furkids & ppl, I would recomend this breed for anyone who wants to do any doggy sports :D with a small dog we will have our 3 competing next year 2 in Obedience & 1 in Agility Paps only have a signal coat, they will need a regular groom in particular around the ears, tail feathers, pants on the back legs, just to keep them nice, I groom ours a couple of times a week & it only takes me about 15min for each dog, other than that they are great Oops being a little biesd here sorry, :D Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

As long as they have some nice cool tiles to lie on and some shade, they are pretty content and my JS copes with the heat better than my clipped Maltese x. They absolutely adore their 'person'and are very intelligent. Mine pick things up very quickly, usually in a couple of tries. The only thing is that they are slightly charry with strangers but if you socialise them well, they should be ok. They are speedy as well Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Topoftheheap Posted December 9, 2011 Share Posted December 9, 2011 I think a pug!!!! tibbies are great (i sure couldn't stop at one, but they are so so so smart, and independant, that recall is almost impossible, i don't really trust mine off lead because if they are in the mood to please they will do it no worries, but if there in a cheeky mood they are off!!!) pugs are confident, are not princessey in any way, and ive never heard them really bark at shows. Scarlet, you picked 2 of my favourite smaller dogs....tho' the shelties are bigger than the tibbies. We've owned both, shelties in the past & now tibbies. At one stage we had a couple of both. You're right, the breeds have different temperaments. The shelties had the working dog attitude of what do you want me to do. The tibbies' attitude is, what is the point of what you're asking me to do. If it doesn't have a point..! Like, an owner had her tibbie at training classes. One activity consisted of a treat hidden under cones....& the dogs had to find them. All the dogs, except the tibbie, had pushed over the right cone to get the treats. He wasn't into this, at all. Finally, his owner tipped over the cone for him. He wasn't interested.....seems he'd known there was something there, but his attitude was. 'I don't want that cheap treat. So there's no point!' Another activity was winding tunnels the dogs had to go thro' to get to their owner at the end. The tibbie's owner knelt waiting for her boy to emerge....& waited....& waited. Then she felt a nudge at her back. He was there behind her....he'd figured the quickest way to get to his owner was to by-pass the winding tunnel. I suppose the image of a poodle in a continental clip trotting around a ring conjures images of spoilt princesses who won't get of bed for a couple of million, but really.. they're not!
