We have 14month old male husky. That i believe needs some companionship.. So am looking into getting a female dog, am wondering what breed of dog wouls be a great choice for our husky.. I dont want to get another husky,am looking for a smaller breed.. Of course i would get them both fixed as i do not have the time for puppies and ther's enough puppies around.. Trading poat and gumtree websites ive been looking at..

Thanks

What sort of dog do you like - short haired, long haired, short nose, long nose, super laid back (unlikely since you own a Sibe  ) super active.

Are you looking for a baby puppy, older puppy or adult?

What sort of life style can you offer the dog - inside, outside, lots of exercise, little exercise, obedience training, trailling, agility.

And the biggy - why do you think your dog wants a friend? Do YOU want a second dog - worst thing you can do is get a pet for your dog when you don't want two dogs :D

Please please please do not buy from just anyone.

Some good breeders do use the trading post ( and gumtree maybe... )

You're better off taking your time and making sure you not only have the right breed but also the right personality of dog to complement your current one.

Some huskies, like my own play very very roughly. A lot of other breeds don't appreciate this.

Off the top of my head Esky gets along best with German Shepherds, Other spitzes usually mals, huskies, samoyeds, lappies and some other high energy breeds like boxers and german shorthaired pointers. I'd dare say adding any of these breeds to my own pack would triple the work I'd have to do.

I would not have a small dog to keep Esky company as they could very easily get hurt by mistake.

Hi

What Esky said.

I have four Sibes, and they are all have different personalities.

The eldest two would mix in a dog park with dogs of different sizes, sometimes

totally ignoring the smaller more in the face dogs. The 3rd girl loves every body and every thing. The last girl is totally over the top in her play.

If you want a companion for your dog, and you are not concerned with the breed, why not get a well socialised rescue dog.

To answer your question my dogs have played well with GSDs, Airedales, Rotties, Danes,

Kelpies, Dallies, Old English, Borders, boxers, staffies, Labs, Goldies and various mixes as well as our cat.

You know your dog the best and how he plays. I would be finding a companion that would suit his personality. It's a hard decision to go from one to two dogs, it maybe a companion for your first dog, but brings in a whole lot a other variables.

Good luck.

This was my thought too as I did suggest to pooch1 on the BC thread. IMHO a Border Collie wouldn't be a suitable choice either as they have their own play style & don't like it when the play gets too rough.

By the way "Esky" is just beautiful. What a magnificent example of the breed.

Thank-you all for your thoughts.. Theres is no way we would be a pup from anyone other than a proper breeder.. I would not be looking for a to small of a dog. I was thinking small like a bluey.. I would love a lab or yes a collie.. I totally am thinking about ur comment thats its 1 thing getting another play mate but its another dog to attend to and extra wrk..

I did look under the sub breed forums, but couldnt find any husky forums..

Thanks again.. Ill keep deciding if another pup is needed

I know a few people who have huskies and small dogs and manage just fine, isn't there a poster here who has a poodle and 2 huskies?

I also work with a lady who has a pom and a husky, never had a problem.

 Totally agree. I have four that play with the cat. One that loves little dogs.

It totally depends on the dog. They do play rough though and zoomies OMG the zoomies.

Pooch1 I have just posted in the Sibe thread, so it's on page one.

Come in and say hi  and post some pics.

I recently got an Australian Shepherd to join my 5 year old female husky and they get along really well. The Aussie is more energetic and isn't quite as 'bombproof' as the Sibe, but is strong enough and quick enough to stand up to rough play but slightly smaller...also with the added advantage of not running off when off lead and is trustworthy around stock.

I echo the sentiments of earlier posts - please get any new dog from a reputable and registered breeder or even a breed rescue group. A great breeder is someone that not only does the appropriate health tests but also takes the time to ask YOU plenty of questions! Unfortunately not all registered breeders are reputable - but most are. If you talk to a few then one or two will standout for you and what you want for your dog.

Glad it's you & not me  I had a hard enough time deciding to get another dog & I already knew it would have to be a female Border Collie, as I already had a male. And it was doing my head in.

It really is a big commitment a 2nd dog & it is a lot more time consuming I have found anyway. Good luck with whatever you choose to do & what breed you decide on. Keep us posted. :)

That would be me

I have a toy poodle and 2 huskies. I only just recently adopted 1 of the huskies through a rescue group and she gets on fine with my poodle  They all get along with the cat as well. I am also adding a new show potential addition this year too hopefully and I think the huskies will be fine. :)

Actually a few people I know have Lappies and Huskies, so they might be worth a look into.

Again there is a wide variety of personality in the breed, some real cuddly sooks and some very full on ones too

A good breeder would be able to pick a suitable dog to fir into your household :)

Husky zoomies are  Seriously some of the speeds Takoda gets up to - all the while she manages to whiz around corners and come to a stop when she has to.
