Favourite breeds: poms, rottis, chis, bulldogs, lapphunds, dogues

Least favourite: anything that will attack and hurt my current dog, I dont care what breed it is.

Interesting to see small dog owners like big and small dogs but most big dog owners aren't a fan of the little guys. Only getting to that conclusion from the information posted above.

That is interesting! I never saw myself as the owner of a large breed until Tielle the greyhound came along...now I want to try more. I guess if you've never owned a small breed, the unfamilar is always less appealing. Also, they are relatively easily damaged so not ideal for dog parks these days. That is a bit of a con in many people's eyes. Maybe it's a bit like the people in my TAFE class who say "I hate cats" - none of them have ever owned a cat so they don't know what a special experience that can be - and not all that different from dog ownership despite the "cats have slaves" thing.

Mmmm, interesting. I'm currently fostering an iggy and a greyhound. The grey is adorable. Can give you more info if you may be interested!!

The ark is full at my place, I can assure you! My dogs are mostly old now - but if past experience is anything to go by, they will be long-lived. (Chi is 15 and 14 respectively; terriers 14 and 9; grey is 6). Always good to keep your eye out for a home though :)

I suppose threads like this can be pointless because people tend to just list the breed the own as their favourite :laugh: It is interesting to see what makes people like or not like a breed though.

As with most people, I guess the breed I own is my favourite - Kelpies are my favourite because they're smart, affectionate, funny and naughty/cheeky in a good way. Other breeds I like a lot but might not necessarily see myself owning:

- huskie and shiba inu: I love the look and the temperament but their aloof, independence would probably drive me bonkers because I'm used to the: "OMG, PLEASE let me please you, PLEASE!" 'tude of the Kelpie

- standard poodle, bullmastiff, Dobe, pit bull (I love the tan ones with the amazing amber-coloured eyes), rottweiler. All of these dogs - I love the intelligence, size and temperament but they're all a bit too big for me to handle and I think it's important to be able to physically control your dog if you need to e.g. to stop it bolting :laugh: The bigger dogs could easily pull me off my feet.

- GSD - I was bitten by a GSD as a child but still love them - working line only though, not a fan of the show line - but then I tend to prefer the working lines of most breeds anyway. I like them because they're smart and beautiful-looking. I couldn't see myself owning one because again they're a bit big for me and I'd worry about health issues

- beagle: I think they're gorgeous-looking, smart and very lovable. I'm just not sure I'm a good enough trainer to be able to properly train a beagle given that they're not as biddable as a Kelpie :laugh:

- cavalier king charles: only little dog I'd ever consider having. I think they're cute, smart, very trainable and have a lot of attitude and sass for a little dog

- brittany, working line border collie: Unlike the other ones I've listed above, I could probably see myself owning these breeds because they're smart trainable - but I suspect I'll always favour having a Kelpie.

- mutts/crossbreeds: had one as a family pet, have one now in the form of Elbie and he's just as smart and lovable as any purebred. Most people I know have had a crossbreed in their life and in their heart at some point.

As to the dogs I don't care for, I don't have any active dislikes having met good and bad examples of many but as a general rule - I tend not to care for little dogs - the cav and perhaps the westie being the only exceptions. For reasons based purely on appearance, I'm not big on bulldogs, bull terriers, boxers, any terrier, poodles other than the standard poodle, frenchies or pugs.

I know many Big Dog owners who also have Small dogs.

well first choice is that it must be a big dog: then maremmas and other LGDs.. then all sorts of dogs

my leats favourite are small breeds.. but then i know many who are perfectly charming dogs.

I love working dogs.

Out of the herding group my favs are Aussie sheps, BC's, Koolies and Kelpies: Why? They are all good loking, coming in striking colours (imo) and are highly intelligent, trainable and loyal.

Out of the Gundog group my favs are: Labs, GSPs, Brittanys and working line ESS: I like these dogs because they have pretty wash and wear coats, lots of energy are intelligent and trainable and lots of fun to be around. They also generally make me laugh with their antics!

I also love Golden Retrievers but I could never see myself owning one, the colour and length of coat (although stunning to look at) really puts me off...

I like Mutts as well, there are some really interesting looking ones out there.

I do not generally like designer dogs both the look and the temperament, although there are a few that I know personally and do find adorable (personality more than anything). Not really a fan of the "fluffy dog" look (sorry poodle people) and knowing the amount of care the coat requires totally puts me off. I will say that I have never met an aggressive oodle yet though.

I love Whippets and Greyhounds, Bull Breeds and their wiggle butted crossbred cousins. Kelpies and working dogs are up there on the list as are the little tenacious Terriers. I love the elegent big sight hounds and the determined little Beagles :D

Favourite dog: papillon, I currently have two, and hopefully 3 soon. They have great personalities, active and love a good romp in the yard, always ready to play ball, love walks but love Cuddles and pats, good to curl up on your lap, extremely intelligent.

I also would love to own a German shepherd, lovely looking dog, with high enthusiasm for their owner,very loyal, very smart and I grew up with them.

Least favourite: terriers, I've been bitten by them before,I've almost always seen them yappy little things, just don't appeal to me. Dislike Chihuahuas, because of their yappy attitude and little man personalities.

Bull terriers and staffy, and maltese Shitzu breeds, because I have seen too many byb and associate them with poor up bringings etc...:). Im sure you get lovely dogs too

I know I probably sound glib, but I love all types of dogs, big and small. That said and pathetic for a woman of my age, I am rather scared of large dogs..pathetic I know, but probably traced back to a childhood incident. I can't move past that and have tried with my sister's large dogs. Probably feel more comfortable then, with little dogs, such as my pom x and maltese.... but love all of 'em.

favourite breed; St Bernard, but i love pugs, bull breeds and mastiff types.

i don't think i have have a breed i dislike, but rather features I wouldn't want in a dog i own like a pointie-like face (like that on a collie and lots of other breeds) purely becasue i don't like the look of it. Also non shedding coats as i can't stand the feel of them.i don't like terriers much either.

and as much as i like them, i would be a terrible owner for a working breed dog, unless i made some radical changes to my lifestyle (which wouldn't be too bad a thing, i suppose LOL)

funny how your tastes change!

i love sighthounds...

i love softcoated/ silky coated dogs so terriers arent for me

still love the teenies like paps and chi's and the like

no more wet-mouths for me...dont like the discolouration round the face so i prefer smooth faces

dont want a smelly coat...so labs etc are out and heavy shedders arent great for our family either

im off the bull breeds...

and sloppy mouths and droolers

so after all these years on the planet ive been through a few breeds and im still not sure there is a perfect breed for me and the family

i think probably have an iggy or whippet ...once im retired thats the way ill go

something not too demanding

I don't think I've seen it yet and surprised no-one has listed it yet:

Favourites: Short-haired MUTTS, mixed breeds, crossbreeds - particularly medium and large boofy types, love brindle colouring

(NB I do not advocate crossbreeding but being in rescue its what I see 99% of the time)

Would love to have: Most bullbreeds - particularly American Bulldog (new favourite - have met several I've really fallen for) and English or American Staffordshire Bull Terrier (that smile is to die for) and most large gentle giants - Dane, Bullmastiff, English Mastiff..... one day hopefully....sigh

Unlikely to have: Long or medium-haired breeds of any size (honest enough to know I'm not big on grooming) or small breeds in the near future (just not set up for them) but I have loved many indiviudal dogs and breeds that would fit either category, just not right for my home situation/lifestyle

Least favourite: Cannot simply generalise to a particular breed - while some traits are inherent, some are not. Many of the things I don't like in some dogs are a result of their training/socialisation/life experiences or lack thereof, not their breed.

Least fave GSPs.. Only because I have lived next door to 2 who are untrained, aggressive and bark all the time... I am sure there are plenty of good examples out ther, I have just never met one...

I am not a small dog person either... I would never own one...

I'd have to say the opposite here. My favourites are GSP's and my least favourites are Staffy's because my GSP has lost part of his ear to a Staffy. He was chasing his ball in the park when a staffy came from nowhere and chomped his ear. I had my grandson with me and he wont go out in the park with me anymore as it upset him so much.

Australian Shepherds are my favourites, followed by an assortment of breeds including newfoundlands, corgis, shetland sheepdogs, greyhounds and tibetan mastiffs. Staffords are my least favourite, followed closely by "designer" breeds.

Fav breed: Working breeds (ie kelpie etc) - I love their intellgience and their agility.

Least favourite: spoilt brat little dogs who bite!

Favourite breed is Japanese Spitz- obviously.

Wouldnt want to own anything else. Plus I only like the fluffy white coats of the JS and the Samoyed, but I find the Samoyed too big.

I do have individual dogs of other breeds owned by friends who I like though :)
