someone on a US forum has asked me the rough price of neutering a male dog (whippet). I think it cost me around $180 each but I really cant remember, it was a fair while ago now.

What's an average price these days?

I called a whole bunch of vets yesterday to find out the cost of desexing a female around 10kg and the prices ranged from $190 - $285 but I think they offer a lot of variations - eg including pain meds for 4 days or only 2 day, some did not include the cost of pain relief.

Paid 500 last year, no pain medication included in that, price has now gone up to near 1000 for large dogs like mine

WHAT!?!?! It doesn't cost that much to geld a HORSE!!

My vet has quoted $230 to neuter my stafford.

That's insane!! Dog or bitch?

Even for a bitch that's outrageous (unless it was a pyometra??)

I had a special case that went to a referral centre for desexing- initial consult, full blood work and a number of different specialist tests, fluids, pain relief came up to $1000 for a 17kg bitch. Worth every cent to know exactly what was being dealt with.

Not sure how a regular vet with less testing could make it to that price even with a heavier dog.

Dog

One retained testicle which they charged me 10% on top of the nromal rate for a dog, same rate for a bitch- people where I live are up in arms about the cost as we have no choice on where we go :mad

Sheees that's a bit expensive. What sort of dog?

Dobermann, was a bit of a shock thats for sure (the 500 was when they were "subsidising" the cost)

You must be somewhere really remote. A lot does depend on turnover. Our vets are very busy every day with about 9 vets working the 2 practices and most appointments booked out days in advance. They do allow time for emergencies though. They mainly deal with breeders so do several caesars a week and lots of desexing as well, besides other surgeries. Whenever I have had one desexed there are usually at least 4-5 others being done the same day.

We're remote from other large centres, but I would say this practice is very busy with perhaps 6 different vets that I have spoken to there, plus 2 permanent people on the front desk.

Different vets who visit another town nearby (and they travel 700km to run a clinic there) charge $300 for spaying.

The last two boys we've have done cost us.. $120 (including an ear bump cut open, cells tested ang wound cauterised) for a 38.6kg dog and.. $175 for a 35kg dog with retained testicle and that one included a C5 with bronchi shield and a microchip.
