So Sick Of Uncontrollable Dogs..

Today I was playing with Maui at the park behind our house (middle of our block), happily playing with a new squeaky ball!

I'm on my knees playing tug of war with it and see this huge mastiff cross running straight toward us. I could hear it's owner trying to call it back...

Thankfully I saw it before Maui did and was able to pick him up before the dog got to us... The other dog came straight at me and started circling around.. I'll admit, I was pretty damn scared, Maui was growling, I put my best mean voice on and yelled at the dog.

Eventually the owner got control of him and apologised, he even admitted that his dog would have hurt Maui...

I was shaking and headed home... Called my hubby and described the dog and owner to him, perfect match for another recent attack on a dog he sees every morning when he walks.. That poor border collie almost didn't mSke it and is now dog scared.... I'm so lucky I had Maui close to me and was able to grab him....

Wish I had followed that guy to complain to council, I'll keep an eye out that's for sure....,

So glad you and your dog were ok, I had an incident last week when I was out walking two of my dogs. I had a kelpie come running around the corner straight at my dogs, eventually the owner came wandering down the road. When I said to her one of my dogs is not dog friendly so would she mind keeping her dog on a lead, she yelled at me and told me my dog should be muzzled. I was so mad, my dog was under control on a lead, these people make me so mad.

I hope you find out where the dog lives and can report them before someone gets hurt

So the owner admitted their dog would have injured your dog, yet it was offlead and unmuzzled? :mad

Report it anyway, as there may be other reports already lodged, and yours could be another piece of the puzzle, which helps to make up a bigger picture.

Sorry you had a scary time, and I'm glad you and maui are ok.

glad to hear your both okay. i hate uncontrolled dogs to they are everywhere here and they are always aggressive, i agree with the others in saying phone the council anyway then at least they know about it.

Yep ditto on this post similar to mine in last week, sick and tired of unthinking, uncaring people who have zilch understanding of how dogs react when 'leashed' or 'unleashed' and the various gaurding that occurs towards handler when a unleashed dog suddenly and dramatically approaches a leashed dog etc.

Sooner government/councils realise that the laws are there to be enacted and start policing them the better :(

I agree with this. And specially that the info might relate to a recurring problem.

K, it must've been terrifying for you, but you did the right thing, protecting your dog and deterring the big dog with a loud deep voice.

It's so different when owners do the right thing. Yesterday, I walked around a corner with my 2 Tibetan Spaniels on leads, straight into a young couple with the hugest black dog, also on a lead and wearing a face halter. They were firmly in control of their big dog which was curious about my 2 littlies. Some non-aggressive sniffing followed....then, to everyone's amazement, the Tibbies' tails started to wag and some gentle socialising followed. I asked what breed....a Tibetan Mastiff!

Mita that is so cute - they recognised the connection then? :D

I'm tempted to think so. When a breeder's young tibetan spaniel ran off at the dog show, she eventually found it, sitting happy and safe between the legs of a tibetan mastiff.

But I don't want to highjack the thread. The TM's owners deserve praise for doing the right thing.....having their huge dog well socialised and well controlled. If only all owners did that.... There'd be no terrifying problems like the OP's. Which could've ended tragically.

Some primal throwback recognition thingy happening maybe??? Would be nice to think so :D

So glad your dog was ok. It really annoys me when people let their dogs walk off lead as even if they are friendly if they approach a dog with aggression or social problems on lead this makes it worse for that owner to work with their dog.

The only place for an off lead dog is in a fully fenced yard and house or if totally trained and sociable at a dog off lead area.
