Show Numbers

Out of curiosity why do some states get the breed numbers entered in the show and we here in Brissie don't?

I would love to know a rough estimate on how many are entered before my breed so I wouldn't have to rush for the early morning shows.

I understand it would cost more money and time if they had to print it out and put in each envelope.

Even if the numbers were just posted online, word would spread to those who do not have a computer.

I like to look at the breed counts in other States when posted out of curiosity.

Judges are told in advance how many of each breed they have, so I don't understand why that list can't be shown - the break down is already done.

Depends on who is doing what. I took all the entires and sent them off to someone else to do the catalogues etc which included the judges breeds and numbers. People started asking for a breed breakdown so I asked for an electronic copy of the catalogue, which I passed on to someone else, not involved with the show, who kindly wrote up the break down on DOL. Or they might have sent it back to me and I put it up, can't remember :laugh:

I too like to see a breed break down though :D

It would be a great idea if there was one website you could go to (even a day or two before a show) to have a look at all the breed entries. I too find other states entry numbers interesting.

It would also be good for the public to be able to see if a breed they were interested in had a large entry at a certain show so they could go along and have a look. I know there were a few times before I started showing that I would go along only to see one or two of the breed I was looking at only to be told if I had been there the week before for the breed specialist I would have seen over 20.

I do group numbers, copy and stuff in envelopes, that is a free service for the club. I don't do the judges breed numbers untill usually about a week later. It is a bigger job doing a full breed breakdown and if clubs would close entries sooner then there would be time to get them done to send to exhibitors. This is ALL free to the club so........close shows earlier and pay me more money and I will consider doing full breed breakdowns! Sheesh, look at what number your group starts at, look at your number and hey presto!!!! that is how many dogs are before you!! Sorry, I get a little sick of what exhibitors want cataloguers to do for nothing.

Here in NSW we get a breakdown more often than not and more recently it will appear online somewhere. But not always.

I know the info must be provided to the judge ahead of the show so the extra step of providing it to us punters in some way surely isnt too onorous is it?? Lots if other show info gets online - amendments etc. ?? Just puzzled.

I think it's fantastic when it's done but it's never something I'd expect. It seems now that many of the WA clubs have taken up FB group pages, the numbers get posted on there.

That's a good idea. I would be happy to go to a Facebook page and have a look if it was a national one.

And it is not "hey Presto" as you put it Ceilidh. Very rarely do we get our exhibitor numbers before a show. I pick up my number and catalogue at the grounds so I can't work out where I am in the group before hand even if I wanted to. I put in a SAE but normally it just comes back to me empty and sealed, sometimes with just 'entries received'. I am happy to know that my entry got there but would also be interested in a breed break up. Like I said, even the public may appreciate this.

SA never gets numbers back (except for the Royal or Mount Gambier), let alone group or breed breakdowns. Would be good, but after being involved in running a show, its hard enough to get people to do the jobs that do need to be done, let alone the extra nice touches.

I have been under the impression that we are not allowed to know how many of our breed is being entered. Was told in case you are points hunting and dont want the competition and only enter shows where your dog will be the only one in its breed.

Not a very practical plan. I am nearly always the only dog of my breed. No help needed there! It is the breed in front if me I need the count on - can be an hours worth if sleep of they all turn out!

A tiny bit of paper, that you can see has been cut from a full sheet so they got probably 20 of them....yup, that's a huge expense.

The fact that more and more want this sort of information to help plan their weekend and make it a more enjoyable experience....bet the show organizers would really love to see less bitching on show day.

If the shows closed ON TIME...then there would be no rushing to get any paperwork done, be it show secretary or cataloguer....I'm pretty sure that would save some headaches and to those that depend or only do late entries...guess you might want to change your habits. (or offer to do the show sec. job sometime and see what a pain of a job it really can be when it comes to late entries and demanding exhibitors!)

When I did the job...a breakdown not only of the breed, but of the sex was done....we had to list males/females and 'specials' (which are champion class) All breeds and groups were done, as well as times for starting each group (you were not permitted to start before the time given on your paper, but if the organizers did it right, you always ran about 10 minutes behind...no one got a surprise and missed a call, and there wasn't a ring sitting empty, waiting for the time to tick to the top and begin again) It's seriously not a lot of work, nor is it any great expense....we (the clubs) used to pay postage too.....so count yourselves all lucky I say.

In this age of electronic wonders....it's common to get breed counts online...it's not a big ask as many clubs work on computers for their stuff..either entrys or catalogues..if the judges get the breakdown, it should be posted. Half hour more work? Not even....but the results of such a simple thing, could make not only shows run smoother, but a whole lot happier crowd, and as we know...dog shows can bring out the crankies.

So it seems a lot of us would love to know a breakdown of the breeds being shown. How would I go about asking about this? Do you think just starting an 'open to the public' Facebook page called something like Dog show breed break down (or similar) would be a good start? I'm happy to do it if others would forward it on to show secretaries and they could start posting break downs. If the judges get a break down the week prior it would surely not be too hard to post group breakdowns on a Facebook page.

As previously stated, most shows in NSW give a breed breakdown when numbers are posted to exhibitors. Interestingly enough, most of these shows are listed on OzEntries and the majority of entries are received via same. You may be interested to know that of the 1000+ entries for the recent St George District Kennel Club Show, approximately 850 of those entries were done via OzEntries. As most people would know, shows that are listed on OzEntries generally close 7-10 days before the show so I guess that my question would be, if the show secretaries in NSW can make all this information available to exhibitors (whilst working within a very small time frame for preparation of catalogues and mailing of numbers), why do other States have a problem with doing this also?

There is plenty of dog related FB pages, I don't think there needs to be yet another one.

A page is not going to make someone post the details if they don't already on the many avenues available to them...

Ozshow, DOL, FB etc...
