Can someone explain to me in really simple terms how the dangerous dogs laws work?

If you can't prove what the dog is then the council can come along and seize your dog if they think it's a dangerous breed?

What about all the unknow parentage of the bull breeds at the RSPCA and pounds across Australia?

RIP Lennox, you will not be forgotten and your death is the beginning of the end of BSL.

Depends on the state and country, TLC.

In Belfast and Victoria, any dog that is 'of type' (i.e fits arbitrary measurements and physical standards) is a pit bull type dog. You can keep a pit bull type dog in Victoria based on some points but if you don't meet those the dog is killed.

As you have seen in Belfast, the dog is killed as well.

Here in NSW a dog is not restricted unless a Council has issued a notice to declare it restricted and it has failed a breed assessment and/or temperament test.

Breed assessors are DogsNSW judges (from memory you must have been a terrier specialist judge for 2 years or an all breeds judge for four), and they base their decision on what the dog looks like. There are no official guidelines they must follow to assess the dog.

If they come back as pure they are restricted and must be kept the same way a dangerous dog must be kept.

If they come back as a cross breed of a restricted breed they can go on to a temp test. Pass = not restricted, fail = restricted.

Or they can be assessed as not a restricted breed at all.

That's just two states, it's different everywhere as to how they go about it.

I'm horrified they kept Lennox contained in a concrete pen for 2 yrs and allowed no contact with his loving owners. The condition of the dog deteriorated so much, it must have been a living hell for him. Shame on Belfast Council, hope Karma comes back to Bite those responsible.

RIP Lennox

My view is that once Lennox became a cause celebre, Belfast City Council and whichever bureaucrat was in charge of this area, decided that they couldn't be seen to back down.

It does sound like that. If he had never attacked anyone why couldn't he be allowed to live with his owners as a restricted breed?

Because he might, I believe was their thinking. Some people have no logic.

I cannot fathom why the council will not return Lennox's body to his family. It makes me wonder what the council could be trying to hide (eg condition of his body, date of death). By cremating (which the family might not want) and sending the ashes back in the mail, what are they hiding and what evidence is being destroyed in the process? Could the council be charged with unauthorised destruction of property or tampering with evidence?

Such a complete mess and poor Lennox pays with his life, I found this so distressing last night it was hard to stop crying about it and the futility of everyone trying to get a different resolution for Lennox and his family. Cannot imagine how this would feel as his family going through this

I think Lennox died some time ago and they are covering it up, he would have been suffering being away from all he knew and loved and I have doubts about the level of care he would have received whilst in the care of BCC :mad

I wonder if the council can legally refuse to hand over the body. What would be the justification? They get away with this since most people can't afford to take them to court.

My feelings exactly!

And again.

Just so sad...

I think Lennox died a while ago, it makes no sense to deny them the right to say goodbye or take his body.

I also think he died a while ago. That council is just so wrong on so many levels. Their behaviour has been a disgrace. I rang them yesterday afternoon. The woman was a nutter.

Others called, and were greeted with animal noises, and laughter when voicing their concerns. Just revolting behaviour. The council is also refusing to give Lennox's collar back to the owners as well.

There was a supposed bomb threat made to the council after they had killed Lennox. I wouldn't even be surprised if the council made that up too, to make the supporters of Lennox look bad. Will never know, just woudn't put it past them from the things they have done through the past 2 years. There is a video of the dog being assessed last year. In court the assessor said that he was the most unpredictable dog he had ever seen!

There have been several photos of the dog warden who said she was petrified of the dog, with the dog on a leash and not wearing a muzzle. She didn't look to scared. She is the one sitting down in the video.

I hope he is resting in peace. Other photos that have been leaked are of him with a dreadful skin condition and holding a front leg up, looks like he is limping.

Very sad, the whole thing. I feel sorry for his family, they fought long and hard for him. And they are not even allowed to have his collar. :(
