Foster Dogs

True, and some naughty dogs can even unzip a soft crate. Lasareina you can buy a wire crate from dealsdirect. Arrives in a couple of days and they regularly have specials.

ETA: In the link I gave you about crates, you can see the training we did with Nova. Out of all our fosters, he was the most crate-resistant but he was crate trained in just a few days and sleeps in one now at his new family's house :)

hmm food for thought... the pups are pretty laid back (read: lazy :D ) except for a few crazy spurts of activity a few times a day. Sounds like they might be ok as long as the door stays open at first. I THINK they are over the chewing anything that cost more than $10 a Kmart stage... :o

I think I'm just looking at the metal ones from a human perspective and going... That doesn't look comfy! They do look more sturdy and durable for sure. Not sure they will fit in with the bedroom decor though

The wire crates do look like cages and a lot of people find them a bit repugnant because of that. But our fosters all love them. Little Nutmeg LOVED hers - Hoover kept trying to get into the crate, too :D

You can see in most of the images that the crate door was actually left open during the day. We only closed it at night for sleeping or if we needed the pups contained while we were doing something e.g. feeding the other dogs/didn't want them underfoot

So my friend has taken Heidi for a while and I've taken on Bronte as she needed the socialisation more. Bronte is the most amazing horse puppy ever. DaneXmastiff is our best bet. She has spent her first 8mths locked in a backyard with a dominant rotti so is a bit nervy around other dogs and generally unsure about life but she has the SWEETEST nature!

Yes she was. Turns out she was fully vetted and desexed as was Gemma. No one is interested in her though even though she has the best personality. We're thinking of doing a ring around and seeing if any other rescue closer to the city has room for her as she's the perfect dog but people just see kelpieX and keep walking around here. We're upping her profile for now though and doing some advertisement. Hopefully someone will come around

I had to laugh at this. I recall getting out the crate for one of my dogs who had to be kept quiet for a couple of days. Crate was duly set up in the dining/lounge with door open. Dog who needed to be kept quiet did so quite happily on a "free" bed and Mufti took over the crate.

I felt really mean folding it up and putting it away again.

ETA: I think genetically lots of dogs are still "cave dwellers". The other morning I woke up and couldn't find Myrtie. She had actually burrowed under the pillow in Gussy Cat's crate while Gussy Cat was playing Fur Hat on my head.

We have all our dogs trying to pile into the crate because they associate it as a place of treats and good things! That's usually after training though. Some of the dogs don't like it at first but they come around. Nutmeg loved it from the beginning and I remember we had the crate there with door open and she was the one who kept wandering in and lying down.

We always lend out a crate with our fosters for their two week trial period and when I mentioned to the wire crate to Miller's family, they actually flinched. We ended up lending them a soft crate since we had very quickly crate trained Miller and he's fine in the soft crate and psychologically the soft crates are easier for non-crate people to cope with :D I think they've been converted though because they're ordering their own crate online for him, as did Baxter/Nova's family. I also mentioned that it's really handy for enforced quiet time post any surgery, especially if they are a multiple dog family. It's can be really hard to keep a Kelpie or a BC quiet even when they're injured and supposed to be resting! :D

Oh carers are always looking for crates! Is it a soft crate or a wire crate? I will ask and get back to you (once I know which type it is :) but I can guarantee someone will want one :) Thanks so much

It is a wire crate with the hard plastic "floor" you can pull out. It measures 560mm x 900mm. I don't know how high as it is folded. I can't open it up as I am in agony with a bad back but going from the Vebo Pet website (where I bought it some years ago), I imagine it would be about 650mm high and classified as Large.

DD - can you get the crate to one of the regular transport runs Rhonda and Marshall do up from MUP's area? Their usual meeting point is at the McDonalds at Prestons on Camden Valley Way - you could shoot down the M2/M7 and pop up right next to it.

ninahartland will know when Rhonda or Marshall will be there next...
