He said there is a slight chance of it being something else, but us doubtful. He has immune medicated hemolytic anemia White blood cells are attacking his red cells. I assume the vet has put him on the steroids already? If you have the option, I would keep him home with you at nights rather than in an emergency vet and if it were me I would not authorise blood transfusions unless things are completely desperate - they can cause the reaction to "bloom" I'm so sorry Teebs, I hope he pulls through, many dogs do. Teebs Posted July 26, 2012 Author Share Posted July 26, 2012 thanks SSM Steroids were started tonight, the vets have the web cam set up on him and honestly, he is in better care there. I am sick at the moment and spending most nights in the bathroom being sick, if he went down hill i might miss it or be unable to get him into the car if he has to go anywhere. I feel so guilty, he was sick on tuesday but he normally gets over these things, so i left him to see how he was going Wish i just took him into the vets then. They said that depending on how he goes tonight, he may be hit with chemo tomorrow to see if that can help. Its also making it much harder on his kidneys. That's the bummer of it tho', it just looks like a bit of an upset tummy - pale gums, off their food etc. So while I can understand feeling guilty, there's no way you could have known it was this serious. These days if I saw it again I'd hope I'd recognise it early, but there's always that expensive first lesson with lots of diseases. Hope you get better soon too. I don't think Atlas needs to see a specialist Teebs but IMHA isn't something your average vet is going to have a lot of experience with. Specialist advice and monitoring could be done remotely. I think that one of the vets sent results and got advice from one of the Sydney uni vets. I do know that both dogs required blood tranfusions and that both were young. I will try to find out more about their treatment. ETA: I do know that with the second dog, the cause was eventually (and it took time) narrowed to a fairly rare parasite. Might be time to hit the net. I think there are a few support/discussion groups for this sickness. (I offered my guys but they didn't weigh enough) Think the biggest worry Is that he has two things going on at once. I'm heading to bed now. Kaos knows something Is wrong and hasn't left my side.
