A GUIDE dog has been killed after a horrific attack by four pit bulls in Melbourne's northeast.

Alan, 25, was walking his brother's guide dog and another pet dog in Bellfield last night, when a pack of unrestrained pit bulls suddenly mauled them.

The terrified guide dog, called Matilda, was chased by the dogs onto a busy road and was hit by a car, killing her.

A family Cocker Spaniel, called Bosley, is in hospital with deep lacerations after the attack.

Alan told 3AW radio this morning that two men rounded up the four pit bulls and quickly left the scene in Plunkett St at 8.40pm.

Victoria Police is investigating and searching for the owner of the pit bulls.

"We have been told that a 25-year-old Ivanhoe man was walking two dogs along Plunkett towards Bell Street when a pack of four pit bull-type dogs rushed him," a police spokesman said.

"One of the victims dogs, an off duty guide dog, broke free and ran onto Bell Street where it was hit by a car and later died.

"The other dog received lacerations before the pack ran off."

Police are working closely with Banyule Council to find the dog owner responsible.

"Initial statements have been taken and members have door knocked the local area in an attempt to find the dogs or their owners," the spokesman said.

"A number of inquiries are being made and the investigation is ongoing."

Alan told 3AW he was also bitten in the attack and needed hospital treatment.

The State Government enacted dangerous dog laws after a four-year-old was killed by a pit bull in September last year.

How sad for the poor guide dog :( he must have been terrified.

The owners of those dogs are the type of people bringing these breeds down. Wish they would be banned from owning pets full stop as they obviously aren't responsible enough. And again we've got unidentified dogs being labeled pit bulls with out any evidence that says they actually were.

Listening to 3AW on this subject, a male caller stated that his family had a Pit Bull who was a loved family pet and for no good reason turned on the female owner. Consequently, the dog was put down. The fellow sounded a mature reasonable type and said that in his opinion, Pit Bulls are not to be trusted. This whole situation is such a tragedy. I am praying that these dogs are rounded up by the authorities and put to sleep and the owners dealt with severely. What the heck were 4 dogs walking in the public domain unrestrained?

Just repeating what I said on facebook - (and the terrible unrelated photo the website put with that story UGH!!) The Media is responsible for so much of this mess with BSL, they should not be allowed to report on the breed of dog until its proven, headline should read "Loose Dogs Startled Guide dog onto road where it was killed by a car". Should be like Crimes, no naming the suspect - if they cant produce photos or other evidence they are simply "Loose Aggressive Dogs of Undetermined breed" - And again where is it the Dogs fault? The Dogs where obviously poorly contained, accidently or deliberately let loose = Human Fault. Such a tragedy for the dogs and owners involved!

The dogs didn't just startle the guide dog- they mauled both dogs and then chased the guide dog onto the road. They also bit the person walking the 2 dogs.

RIP Matilda :(:rainbowbridge:

How devastating for her owner :(

Obviously the dogs were some sort of bull breed, but really breed is irrelevant here. 4 aggressive dogs should not be wandering around off lead and attacking others.

I hope the owner of these dogs is found and severely punished.

The headline says the guide dog was killed by pit bulls. It wasn't, it ran into the road and was killed by a car.

Of course it shouldn't have happened, it's tragic for everyone involved, but sensationalism is stupid.

It ran onto the road because it was being attacked by the other dogs. So they are directly responsible for the dogs death.

The only thing sensational about the title is the reference to pit bulls.

This is true, but what if it was something else that had startled the dog? It wouldn't even have made the news then. Say it was a windy day and there was a tarp that suddenly moved, the dog startled and jumped into the road. My dogs have almost done this on several occasions. What if it had been a golden that suddenly jumped out from behind a corner and startled the dog? Other than the pit bull type dogs involved, it's not even worth reporting.

They did land the other dog and the two dog's owner in hospital

Exactly. Did you even read the story? The 4 attacking dogs mauled the cocker spaniel, the guide dog and the owner before chasing the guide dog onto the road. It is much more horrific than the guide dog simply getting a fright and running on to the road.

The guide dog was on lead so even if a tarp or something had just "startled" it I doubt it would have been able to run onto the road.

I think the guide dog only escaped and ran onto the road because the owner was himself being attacked and must have dropped or released his grip on the lead.

I don't know why people are trying to deflect the blame from the 4 attacking dogs and their stupid owner?

tarp blowing in the wind isn't illegal. Wandering dogs are.

Four dogs attacked two dogs out for a walk.. Regardless of breed that would be reported in Vic. After all, when Busta the GR attacked it was reported too.

Things like this make the dog world look like they don't care about people and innocent dogs just out for a walk. All we seem to focus on is the media. The media didn't kill the dog.

ETA: When a dog is reported as pitbull or pitbul type, they really mean bull breed. I don't see how focusing on what breed they are or aren't helps the cause. In Joe Public's eyes, if they aren't pitbulls but bull breeds then maybe they should be banned too? Note: I'm not saying they should be, but it is where things are headed in Vic. Be careful what you wish for.,

True, but the guide dog was not startled by anything else but 4 dogs, pit bulls or other breed, it doesn't matter what. The fact is that these dogs attacked and mauled a cocker spaniel and then chased the guide dog onto the road. What would have happened if the blind owner was with the guide dog, and not his brother at the time? Why are you making excuses for these brutes whatever their breed happens to be?
