Ams will probably come on here too. She is based in QLD (near Ipswich) and runs Peiradise - Shar Pei Rescue QLD. I foster for her and she has some beautiful dogs. The breed is not for first time dog owners though. Peiradise also holds 'Peinics' with the next taking place in October. It is at a leash free dog park on the north side of Brisbane and we have had up to 37 pei there in one go so it's magical if you love the breed and want lots of kisses and cuddles!

It's sad that they push people away from Peis as first time owners when a dog savvy person could probably tackle a Pei first time with the right knowledge right?

My friend has a Pei puppy (you would have met her little Ruby Rose) and its her first dog and they fit perfectly! Would be sad for her to miss out on her dream breed if someone had said to her don't get one with it being your first dog. She's really smart though and a Lawyer herself so got the brains to tackle a new breed and learn fast :D

I have had Sharpei for 15 years and have been helping with Peiradise for the past four years. Having seen so many come into care because their owners didnt know what they were getting into and only saw the cute wrinkly puppy, that I too must agree that they MAY not be for the first time dog owner. In saying that our Sharpei were both my husbands and I first dogs as adults but both of us had lived with dogs in the family home all our lives.

I have met Ruby Rose and she is absolutely lovely. We were also lucky that our first Sharpei were very mellow and easy to train. The main point we stress is that you must listen to more experienced owners about the both the good and the bad of owning a Sharpei (ie must have a large bank account for vet fees should they arise). Dog training is definately a must and good socialisation. Some Sharpei are easier to train than others and they are not a dog to be left in the backyard. They do need to be allowed inside with you if you are home.

I would suggest either coming to one of the Peinics or contact Peiradise (email [email protected]) and see if you can organise a visit to see many Sharpei all in one place and see the differences in their personalities. If you still want to get one then decide if you want a rescue pei or one from a breeder. Do NOT buy from a petshop or a backyard breeder or you could be in for years of grief. If you do want a dog from a breeder then Peiradise can also help with that information.

I dont agree that only experienced dog owners should get a Shar pei & that they arent for first time dog owners.

IMO it depends on the owner and like any breed they need training & socialisation.

I find Shar pei are so much easier than many other breeds, as they arent needy, they are very independant & are not high energy, they are quite calm dogs who are just as happy to sleep, than go for a run or walk :)

They are stubborn but fairly easy to train too!
