Council Policies On Injured Animals

Recommended Posts

This morning I was walking my dog and found a little cat lying on the nature strip in a high level of distress. I quickly figured out that she couldn't walk. I did speak to a couple of people in the street and no one knew her. I door knocked but got no answers at 7.15am. So I scooped her up and bought her home with me. I then took her into my vet. I've just spoken to them and they said she's not microchipped and they suspect she has a broken pelvis. The council is picking her up this afternoon.

My question is, will the council pts straight away or will they have to keep her in her injured state for 7 days.. Its breaking my heart to think of her in agony at the pound. She was such an amazing little cat who trusted me to help her. I feel I did all I could, but its really upset me. I think its best that she be laid to rest sooner rather than later.

The only other thing I can think of doing is a letter box drop in the street she was found advising that an injured cat was taken this this vet clinic, with their details. I feel she has owners and I'd like them to know what happened to her. She was wearing a collar but no ID on it.

Oh poor kitty, I hope they dont keep her alive for that length of time either but I dont think they will

There is a thread about a pup that was left at a pound with a broken leg and Andrea has just posted about what the councils responsibility is in a situation similar to yours - worth having a read - http://www.dolforums.com.au/topic/240870-puppy-dumped-with-broken-leg/page__pid__5938537__st__30#entry5938537

I would do everything I could to find her owners, do a letterbox drop, doorknock on neighbours and also post on Facebook as networking may help you find her owners

Good luck and good on you for helping the poor kitty

Well I thought I'd find the local pounds number and give them a call. They said their vet will assess her when she gets there and if she's bad they will PTS straight away, but they are going to let me know one way or the other. She said otherwise they have to keep them for 8 days before they move somewhere else. Sadly I really don't think she'll be able to be helped.

As much as it hurts, I'd rather she be laid to rest peacefully than be suffering in a cage at the pound. I feel honoured that she trusted me and wanted me to help. When she was in the carrier, I opened the door and petted her head, she purred and I feel she was thanking me.

Well I'm happy to report that the pound did in fact call me back this afternoon after their vet had assessed her and she's been sent off to the shelter vet for x-rays, pain relief and treatment... the little girl lives to fight another day.. I couldn't be happier for her. Its still no guarantee, but she's still with us and they are trying.

Thats good news

Lucky little cat has you to thank for her good luck, the next person walking along may not have been as compassionate as you

Well two other people saw her and did nothing, I couldn't do that and have a clear conscience. I can't believe how tired I am today from all this worry about a cat who doesn't even belong to me. Tomorrow I am going door knocking and letter box dropping in the hope of finding her owner.

How can those people sleep at night??

Good luck finding her owners

I'm highly allergic to cats, but I'd never be able to just walk by when there was one so obviously in need of a hand... seriously, I can always get antihistamines to counter the allergy - but it's a lot harder to heal a soul that can't find the heart to help an injured animal...

You did good Michelleva... and good will come back to you...

Here is a photo of the little girl I helped this morning.. I'm praying she's getting good care and is resting peacefully tonight. She's such a pretty girl with a wonderful personality. And I believe she has an owner, I just hope that I can help them find each other again. Tomorrow's plan is to door knock the area where I found her, I've got flyers ready to go as well. Plus someone gave me the idea to put this pic up on the lamp posts, so if she's from a neigbouring street and they are looking I will hear from them. Fingers crossed.

I've been out door knocking and letter box dropping for the last 2 and a bit hours but we have hope. We met a couple of people who've seen her before and a house we suspect she may live.. they weren't home but I left a note under the door mat, and now we cross our fingers and wait.. there are also signs everywhere on lamp posts, so hopefully someone will know her and alert her owner.

Well after all my door knocking efforts and flyers at this stage no owner is taking responsiblity for her. I have my name down on her at the pound. So once her time is up there, she can come here and I will help her get better. I can't keep her, so I'll be rehoming her.

The pound is so hard to deal with though. They told me I need to speak to the cat manager and I've left message after message yesterday and she just doesn't call back. I've heard a lot of bad stories about this pound, so I'm nervous about her being there. Fingers crossed I know more today.

To be honest I still can't quite believe that she's alive. I thought with her injuries the pound vet would have taken one look at her and put her to sleep.

If she comes here, she's going to be called Destiny, I think its fitting.

For anyone whose followed the story of the little cat I found I've got an update, sadly its not a good one.

I've finally spoken to the cat manager and the vet who is treating her. Her pelvis is fractured in 4 places and requires surgery at a specialist vet which will be well over $2000. I simply can't afford that.

I'm heartbroken, I really thought if she just needed rest and time to recouperate I could help her, but this is way over my head. I'm saddened that her humans let her down so terribly, we tried to pick up the pieces but she's just too broken.

Oh and I named her Destiny. I don't want her dying without a name. She was loved, even if it was only me.

Thank you for getting Destiny the care she needed and doing what others should have.

You don't have to be a cat or even animal lover to exercise decency and compassion.

I'm sorry her future is not looking great. If you wanted to treat her and find her a new home, I'm sure DOLers would be behind you and most of us could scrape up a few dollars each to help.

But at the end of the day you need to do what is best for her and given the extent of her injuries and surgery required I would say it is kinder to send her on her way.

Know that you have done all you can for her. She is no longer in pain. Take some comfort in that. Thank you for caring.

Thank you. She's still at the shelter, receiving pain relief. I have to call back tomorrow, it was a shock hearing the extent of her injuries. I feel its too big a task to take on, so I think the kindest thing we can do is set her free. I don't know how shelters work, but I couldn't get her until the 2nd September, so don't know if they can PTS before that date.
