Another Joint Supplement: Rose-hip Vital Canine

I have no idea about Greyhounds? But I have had a few breeds of dogs and none of them have been overweight as the health risks are just too great for me to allow them to become overweight.

Rommi has her food changed daily depending on if she has put on a little weight or lost it and also how much she has done i.e it been freezing and they have spent pretty much all day inside or they have been to the beach running for hours. Lewis generally eats what he doesn't and rarly much more so he is far less likely to become overweight but if he does his food is reduced by 25% until his weight drops again, same as with Rommi. They rarely vary more than 500gms above or below their ideal.

Yes and the reason I have switched to it is my dog ended up with gastric bleeding from NSAID.

If you were really concerned about having to give your dog unneccessary things I would concentrate on getting her weight right down and you may find she coped much better than she has been. Getting their weight down is a very cheap and effective way to reduce stress on joints and help with any lameness issues.

I have to look up on NSAID. So, I pressume Rose Hip is not under NSAID category?

Yes, I do recognise and acknowledge the fat plays a key role in this. But, c'mon it's easier for greyhounds than fat labs.

Why is it easier for greyhounds? Labs do not have to be "fat labs". I know some beautiful, lean, athletic labs. They are that way as their owners feed them appropriately and do not use the excuse "oh but they are a lab".

And yes I do know what it is like to keep a dog's weight down. I have a lean beagle. The kind that gets a comment everytime it goes to the vet as they don't normally see them with a waist as "beagles like their food". Yes Jessi loves her food, but I regulate the amount that she gets to keep her lean. With arthritis in the knee, the last thing she needs is to carry extra weight.

Has anyone else had a dog get total hyper on this? We bought some for doof (12 1/2 year old shep x kelpie) and gave him a scoop a night for 2 nights, and the following days he could barely sit still, he was so overexcitedly hyper that he just sat there shaking all day. Took him off it and it calmed down. He's never done it before, he's been on short term NSAIDs for flare ups before and the absence of pain has never made him into this much of a nutcase before. I'm wondering what could be in there that sent him crazier??

Ahhhhh, so it's just doofus being a doofus! I can't think of anything else that would have set him off, and he calmed down when I stopped it.....bloody weirdo that boy!!!!

Didn't happen here. It is the same old same old.

Maybe there's a side effect. Pls try giving again and observe. It would be worthy to escalate this if it's simulate-able.

Yeah it was definitely weird. I don't see how it could make him feel better than rimadyl, and he wasn't hyper on rimadyl so it can't be due to pain relief??

I'll probably try it again, but not for a while  he's a total pest on a regular basis and this pushed him over the ledge to total pain in the backside  he's naturally a very anxious dog. We tried him on petark calm and it made no difference at all to his anxiety.

I have had my girl on it for about a week and have to say I think it is great for her.

She is now wanting to walk for longer, and has more energy. I think she is feeling much brighter as she is not in as much pain.

Maybe your boy was feeling much better because his pain relief was better and this was his way of showing it.

Well I took my oldie Ness out on the weekend and at the age of 12 years 10 months she raced around her track 3 and in doing so completed her TD title. Neither the judge or the steward could believe she was that old. Pretty good going considering I was really considering not tracking her at all this season because she had started to slow down and want to sleep more and was also starting to limp just on normal walks.

Go Ness and definitely pleased to have come across the RHVC .

I just want to bump this thread with a bit of an update.

My old girl Ness (13 years 2 months) ruptured her cruciate just over 2.5 months ago and did some meniscus damage. She is now 7 weeks post-op (lateral suture) and taking nothing other than the Rose-Hip Vital Canine supplement plus fish oil. She only had the usual 10 day course of standard anti-inflams and pain relief. The specialist has been particularly impressed with her recovery and I think she is going brilliantly and thought I'd share some video.

Unfortunately didn't do anything for my boy :(

Same here. And the amount required for the first couple of weeks.. Ends up being absurdly expensive for large dogs and most got wasted because I couldn't figure out how to hide such massive amounts of powder in his food (because he sure as hell wouldn't eat it willingly).

Yeah I will have to say that is one hard part for a larger dog - the quantity required. I am lucky both of mine are relatively small (16 kg BC bitches) and even my fussy girl was able to have her powder hidden in her meals. I also feed twice a day so was able to split the quantity where needed when I left Kenz on the loading dose.
