Hi all,

Im helping a friend look for her next dog. She would like a German Shepherd or Shep cross.

Basic info is:

fully fenced back yard

Works school hours.

What we think would be best suited to her situation,

Must be good with kids 10yo's and 6yo (they have owned dog's before)

prefer dog / bitch to be 12mths or older

prefer from a foster situation or ex show dog

would like to be able to trial the dog so no interstate sorry

Thanks in advance

There's a Shepherd Rescue and they are always full, Renbury in particular seems to get lots of Shepherds and they rescue from there.

They have a profile on Petrescue with the following contact info:

Contact Us

Contact Name Linda Pierce

Phone number 1: 0407 453 005

Phone number 2: 0401 024 05

They have 5 beautiful girls listed currently and you can find them by searching the Rescue Directory for the rescue group - German Shepherd Rescue NSW - and then it will show you the dogs they have listed. Alternatively you could just search for large female dogs in NSW and you'd find the 5 that way.

Thanks EmmaA but with children in the mix we would much rather a dog out of a foster situation or ex show, i know this is no garentee of stability with kids but we have a better chance this way and are able to trial the dog which is an absolute must when children are involved.

I know this is a rescue forum, but have a look at the mature GSDs presently available from registered breeders, listed in the Breed Pages of DOL. I'd be looking for a breeder who includes children in how she raises her dogs. Most breeders who do so, tend to say if this is so, in their notices. And I notice that the very first entry has a pic of the GSD adult & puppy with a child.

Just my opinion, but I think registered breeders who raise their dogs well, especially with good socialisation & matching with suitable homes, are preventing the dumping of dogs.

And there's evidence to support that.
