Do You Report People?

I wonder if councils are generally just understaffed. It seems as if building rules, dog rules and general maintenance just isn't being done. Then people complain and they put in more rules whereas if they just enforced the existing ones things would be fine.

I am also annoyed at dogs rushing the fence, jumping the fence and chasing my dogs when we are out walking.

Jumping the fence. WTF.

Aggressively running the fence. WTF.

Chasing my dogs up the street. WTF.

There is an obligation and responsibility to report.

My dogs are double fenced inside a six foot fence, 10 metres back from the property fences.

No one interferes with my dogs and all the dogs can do is bark, if they're interested.

I expect the same from others.

I have very little tolerance for dogs rushing out at me, mainly because I am walking 5 dogs at a time (yea all mine) and its bloody difficult having to control them and fend off anything else. I reported one dog on out normal route, a male pitbull who had rushed us a couple of times but always pulled up when I yelled at him. He was only a young dog, I would say less than 12 months, but getting braver every time. The final straw was when we had walked past where he lived, were about 200 meters up the road and he came around behind me and had a go at my oldest dog, who was 11 and full of arthritis. (My old dog beat the crap out of him, but thats irrelevent)I reported it to the council, who went and spoke to the owners. Turned out this dog had a history of this, and had actually gotten out of its yard one day and killed another dog. Now when I see it, its locked up (usually) and the owners have put a lot of training into it. However I still carry a pience of poly pipe around 2 1/2 foot long with dowel in one end. If he does comeo out (or any of hte other dogs out that way) they will cop a flogging with the hose, and if the owner of the dog wants to say anything about it, they might cop one as well!!! So sick of my dogs being under control and having to deal with idiots who think because its a rural area, they can let thier dogs run free.

Yep me too.

makes me pretty cranky when I cant go for a walk without having to deal with dogs off leash and owners who seem to have no concept of the law or how what their dogs do impact on my ability to enjoy being in a public place.

We were at a local picnic area with my grandkids sitting on a blanket - feeding the ducks spreading the food and drinks out and some idiot lets a pair of boxers off leash - they come racing at us full boar and we grab the kids - jumped all over the blanket trashed our food and drinks and all the owner can say is - they are friendly, they wouldn't hurt them - one grand kid had a scratch right down one arm where the dog pounced on him and the ratbag just keeps walking miles behind where his dogs are trashing the rest of the families in the park. Make more laws and the pond scum take no notice of them and they are never policed anyway.

Hmm I have a confession to make. I'm a compulsive off lead dog walker. I hate having Toby on a lead. I don't think you should be dobbed in solely for having your dog off lead. However, if your dog is a menace and you don't control it then you should expect a talking to.

But what makes you so special that the rules shouldn't apply to you? Why are you and your dog different from everyone else?

I no longer have a reactive dog but I still don't want strange dogs approaching me or my dogs while out walking. When I had a reactive, DA dog it was a nightmare! I was always getting in between him and other dogs that were 'friendly' but off lead and wandering up to 50 metres or more from their owner.

Sorry I missed the part where I said I was special.

You said you repeatedly have your dog off lead. Unless you are in a off lead park or designated area then you are breaking the law. Why do you think its ok for you to do that? If you do it then you obviously don't think the rules apply to you for some reason, hence my asking why? What about you and your dog is special that the laws don't apply to you?

I think RazorBlade and their dog are NOT different from everyone else. :p There are some places I go that are technically on leash areas, but at certain times of the day they are so well established as illegitimate off leash dog areas that people ask you why your dog is on leash and assume if it is it's got problems. No one gets reported because so many people with dogs do it. They are part of the community and lots of people who share the areas know the names of the dogs and stop to greet them as well as their owners. Most of the people that use the areas seem perfectly comfortable with strange dogs approaching them and their dogs if they have one. I am one of them. I like getting visits from strange dogs. I gush over them same way other people gush over mine. Doesn't mean I expect everyone will want to talk to my dogs, but it does give an insight into why people think it's okay. For most people it IS okay.

Quoted because it was said better than I could.

Did you overlook the part where I said if your dog is being a menace or you don't have control then it isn't acceptable?

No. It is irrelevant how well behaved your dog is. It is against the law, yet you frequently do it? It's not acceptable even if you have the most perfectly behaved dog in the world. Why can't people understand this?

If I am walking my dogs in an area that is not a designated offleash area I don't see why I should have to contend with you and your off leash dog - well behaved or not - I don't go to off leash areas so that I can avoid off leash dogs.

yeh well its not like i really want the dog declared dangerous or anything. But there was the point where the dog could have attacked mine and the bloke is 20 metres away doing something else. Obviously no front fence or anything.

And this is why things escalate - they will NOT declare a dog dangerous on a report that it got loose and could have caused an issue.

Contact the council and just advise them what happened and that you are concerned for your own dog or others (if its a bigger dog mention smaller ones or if its a little dog concern that a bigger dog may retaliate and then be painted as the one in the wrong). Suggest that it wasn't an actual attack this time but if there was some way the owner could be spoken to about the rules (under effective control/on lead whatever the local rules are). Where I use to live the council was proactive to try and educate such owners before things happened that make the news, vets, courts, etc.

As for dogs being walked off lead - if the rules say under effective control and it is there is no issue. However I know of one lady in the area we are in now that had her SWF off lead walking past the shops - this dog has gone off its nut at my two that I was about to tie up at the time. Yes she dragged it away (it was a few metres back luckily) but it still fired up our young dog

It's has no effect on you so why would you seek to deny me what I feel is a basic requirement for both myself and my dog? I go to great lengths to make sure my dog is well socialised, well behaved and well trained. Each to their own but, having a dog restrained continually does not in any way fit into my philosophies of owning a dog.

Have you ever exceeded the speed limit while running late to work? Not quite come to a complete stop at a stop sign? Driven a car while tired? Paid a tradesman cash? Not worn a helmet on a push bike? Stayed a little bit to long in a times car park? Etc etc

Well I think you should be dobbed in if you have your dog off lead and in future I will endeavor to see everyone who does it fined .

I cant understand why you would put your dog in that position and completely disregard other people and their dogs.

It because people dont follow the law in the belief that their dogs should be somehow exempt is why we cant take our dogs where we used to and why more and more laws are made - sorry I dont get why you think its O.K. to do this.

It does have an effect on other people and its against the law - if you dont like the idea of a dog being on leash then do what I did buy a property where they can run free without having to totally disregard the law and other people's right to free use of public places.

Problem is you all think you have wonderful control and there is no risk to anyone else or their dogs - its like parents who think their kids are perfect and allow them to run wild and annoy others - its disgraceful.
