Wobbler Syndrome In Dogs

 Share

Recommended Posts

Once it was noticeable I took her to the specialist vet but there was nothing that could be done.

Some dogs are very stoic and in her case the spinal deterioration was too progressed. She was PTS. :(

Ive only just heard about this condition in dogs !

One of our Cavs has been wobbling when he walks, and i started googling as you do, and Wobblers Syndrome came up and I was sure thats what he had !

Anyway took him the vets, and told her what i thought it was and she said no he hasnt got that (hes just got bad arthritis instead) which can make some dogs appear wobbly when they walk. She said its mostly in bigger breeds and in a couple breeds in particular. She had not seen it in a small breed of dog yet.

Doesn't sound too good :(

Thanks Stitch, what do you mean by "PTS" ?

Can I ask what happened to your Dobe?

Thanks DiscoDobe I will check it out.

Yes JuleslovesCavs it looks like only large breeds get it, how is your cav going now with the arthritis?

PTS meants put to sleep aka euthanised. crying.gif

I'm so so so sorry for your loss :( my heart goes out to you. My boy "Cash" has 3 mid seizures where he is wobbly afterwards, we spoke to his breeder and she said that along some of his lines some of the dogs has had this. We sent a video of him having one of these seizures to the neuro vet and he does not seem convinced it wobblers syndrome so we have to do some more test.

We have always had a Dobe as well as our other showdogs.

I am always very careful when it comes to feeding etc. especially in a large dog to ensure the correct nutrition etc. Neither dog was subjected to rough handling on their vertebrae but both dogs did a lot of running and were very active.

The last Dobe boy we had to be PTS at 5 years from Cardiomyopathy and the Dobe girl we had before him had to be PTS at 7 years old because of sudden onset Wobblers. Both dogs were bought from 'reputable breeders' and I followed the breeders feeding instructions in both cases. I will never get another Dobe again even though I love the breed.

BustaGirl your dog does not sound like he has Wobblers so it will be interesting to see the results of the tests. Wobblers is basically a spinal problem.

Thanks guys for your responses and help, so sorry to hear of how this has effected some of your dogs. Cashie my boy is being hooked up to a ECG tomorrow at the vets to monitor his heart to see how that is. I will update how I go.

Thanks again.
