Relocating To Sydney

The risk of adverse reactions to heartworm injections is very high. I will never use it after having a dog react badly to it and develop allergies that it has taken me years and thousands of dollars in alternative medicine to get him back to normal. Chatswood is definitely high tick risk so year round treatment every two weeks will be needed. No idea on vets in the area and you won't need SASH or ARH unless you need a specialist for something the normal vet cannot fix. They are MUCH more expensive than normal vets for everything. Hopefully some locals will be able to advise on vets in the area.

oh that's good to know. My boy is a little bit more sensitive on skin so I might not want to get him into injection just yet.

I'm happy to do monthly tablet.

SASH and ARH are 24hr vets, whereas not many others are (or are not widely advertised as such) so it's good to know they are there, regardless of cost.

I think I mentioned Willoughby clinic before, I've had them recommended to me on more than one occasion.

Chatswood's a lovely area, nice and central.

There is a lovely cafe at Roseville (next suburb) called "Sous le Soleil" with a dog park nearby and large park for people with dogs on lead. You can get yourself a nice coffee and have a walk around with your dog.

Roseville Cinema is also wonderful as is the restaurant right next to it!

milbemax or drontal for worms, advantix (as long they aren't near cats) and a heartworm blood test then proheart if all clear.

ETA: You still need to check for ticks when living in a tick-prone area. Western NSW isn't known for paralysis ticks, they're more a coastal thing. So if you go walking in any natural areas check them whether they ahve treatment on or not. Advantix also does fleas.

Inner West is more dog friendly than lower North Shore (Chatswood etc) in my experience, especially when it comes to dog parks, dog friendly parks, dog friendly people, etc but they are vastly different area so it depends what you're looking for.

I've lived in both (currently an Inner Westie, but was a lower North Shorite for ages, in St Leonards).

As for travelling, I've done Sydney to Melbourne with the pugs (the coast rd, so the long way) and I stopped mostly when I got restless, they slept and I had to wake them for pee breaks! I had window shades up for them but found they annoyed my side vision too much and I couldn't see properly, but there are probably better ones - mine were an afterthought we bought on the way.

Flea, tick, heartworm in Sydney, yes. Frontline is pretty much useless here, most vets say the fleas have become immune to it - not sure if that's true but it's rare to find Frontline works on a dog very effectively in metro Sydney.

I use Advantix and Interceptor Spectrum.

Depends on what area you end up in as to vets, and if you want a local vet or happy to travel. Not far from Chatswood is one of the main 24hr/emergency vets in Sydney, SASH. And another in Homebush (ARH) which isn't a huge distance from the Inner West (depending where you are, as the "Inner West" is actually a pretty spread out area).

In the 15 years I have lived in Sydney I have seen two ticks - and that includes 5 years vet nursing. North Syd does certainly have them so get a good vet sorted ASAP. Learn what to look for and how to deal with them.

SASH are great and not too far from where you'll be.

in terms of my own personal opinion - just get a heart worm injection it's so much easier and you don't have to think about it every month or quarter.

The other good thing in that North Sydney Council is progressive with it's pet laws (set by local councils in NSW) so where Marrickville has about 10 official off leash zones North Sydney has 198. Basically any park or reserve other than sports fields IN USE and areas within 10 meters of children's play equipment are off leash. NB: Chatswood is actually in Willoughby and I can't speak to their exact requirements but ... http://www.willoughby.nsw.gov.au/your-neighbourhood/pets/Dog-Ownership/

Yes - agree on North Sydney being high tick. I did actually say that - and to get a vet sorted ASAP. To also learn how to check for and the signs of ticks. Very scary to have them.

Wasn't recommending SASH or ARH as as an every day vet (can you even reg a regular consult?) Only saying I have used both and they're great. Always nice to have a recommendation :)

Again - reaction to heart worn inj - I suppose its each to their own. I have never seen or had a reaction and I'm crap at remembering to even take my own medication on a daily basis. I suck when it comes to that. Once a year is much more convenient for me. I'm sure that my opinion would change if my boy had a reaction to it.

Firstly - your dogs will need to have a blood test BEFORE starting a heartworm preventative - as it can be very dangerous if worms are present in teh heart, and medication kills them .

Actually, just a myth. But yes you should have a blood test to know if your dog has HW.

  • 3 weeks later...

hi all,

hope this question is not being silly....

but just wanting to get an idea on how bad the tick season will be or even now?

if let say dogs walks around the area of the Chatswood Chase / Westfield area, mainly the streets where there are mowed grass in front houses.. how bad is it that dogs will pick up flea / tick..?

sorry if this seems silly but just roughly wanting to get some idea around those areas? It's not bushy area and I suppose it's not too bad? confused.gif

The tick season is bad this year but I'm not sure about the area you are in, hopefully there's someone else in Chatswood that can advise. Personally I would have thought that the area you describe is very built up so it would be a much lower risk than any areas bordering on the bush but hopefully someone else will know.

Chatswood Vet Clinic said not bad already but prefer to have them on Frontline / Advantix every 2 weeks.

Willoughby Vet Clinic said that it is getting much better and some owners have stopped using the prevention every 2 weeks.

So, just hoping that a walk around the Chatswood Chase / Westfield area, the cafe and such for breakfast will not pick any ticks up.
