I strongly disagree with all the doomsayers here. Dogs also have bad days if it was my dog I would carry on as usual, probably restrict ball play keep her closer and keep an eye on her for a while. I would also have given the poodle owners a serve.

Really?? How compassionate when it was their dog that was injured.

Get some help, no one can tell wether she was protecting her ball or not without seeing it.

she has growled many times by the sound of it, perhaps she just got fed up with you not doing anything about dogs annoying her so ramped it up herself?

Dogs growl to warn, next move is action if you don't heed the warning signs they have no choice but to do it themselv's, dogs don't just snap, but the warnings are often missed.

Until you see a qualified and good behaviourist you are doing the right thing by not taking her to off lead places. This is why I hate dog parks because we are in less control of the situation as a whole and unable to always know exactly where things went wrong. Going by what you have said only, your dog seems to be intolerant of other dogs and because of this you need to have her professionally assessed so you can better manage and understand her in similar situations. Good luck with your dog and a big thumbs up for seeking advice. Where are you located, people on here may be able to point you in the direction of a good behaviourist/trainer in your area.

Agreed. I am also bewildered why assistance wasn't offered with paying a vet bill.

Twodoggies2001 - this man was very angry (as you would be) he was yelling at us picked his dog up quickly and walked off not allowing a chance for a conversation to take place to exchange details etc otherwise i would have definitly offered with the vet bill and contact details to find out if his dog was ok after vet check up

And the next time it happened and the dog killed the small dog, would you give the owner a serve then?

Not saying the OPs dog would kill another dog but the point is you don't know.

This is one reason I don't use dog parks, they are accidents waiting to happen. People like you Canetoad would take a dog to the park even when you know it has attacked another dog before and there's every likelihood it would again. The worst thing you can do in this situation is allow the dog to rehearse the behavior, it will become more ingrained and habitual.

what the OP needs to do is get professional help to help her understand and modify the behaviour :)

Wow! Personal attack much :(

You don't have a clue what Canetoad would do in any given situation. To pre-empt your comment with "People like you" is presumptive. How about you play the ball and not the man.

You have the right to disagree with Canetoad's comments. You do not have the right to personally attack her/him, according to the forum rules.

My lab sounds very similar to yours. She is great etc. etc. but has a strong "personality". She decided after being barked at in the face by many small dogs, that she would not take it any more. She decided to get in first if a small dog came quickly towards her. Never had contact with one, except once when I was exiting an Obedience ring and a little dog went for her and their leads got tangled together and they were stuck face to face. No damage done, but it was "interesting". However, I trained the Look At That game and always have treats in my pocket when I go out. She very quickly learned that little dogs are the source of good things from Mum and I can manage her behaviour easily. I will let her off leash at the beach, but put her back on lead as soon as a small dog comes our way. Hope this helps.

Some good advise in this thread. When any incident happens and a dog gets hurt its hard to take but thankfully all parties are ok. Just learn from the experience and be cautious, alert and responsible which by the sounds of it you are.

Also learning your dogs signals from a professional is great as you can avoid incidence before they happen. Chin up. :)

steve at k9 pro.

don't get someone like barkbusters etc in. go with a recommendation.

I have just gotten off the phone with K9 pro their website reads really well and Steve's bio looks great, i will be making a booking very soon to meet with him, thanks :)

Good on you Georgina for seeking professional help with your lab, as someone mentioned earlier it's hard for us to give proper exact advice in regards to training and management over the internet, your best bet is to get her professionally assessed by a good behaviourist and then you can go from there.

I avoid dog parks like the plague - I know some people here on DOL are a fan of them and to each their own but I just see it as too much of a risk as all dogs are so different and (like humans) they aren't always going to get along. My golden retriever puppy is very laid back and submissive and gets along with almost all the dogs that he meets but regardless i still control every interaction he has and I think that's contributed greatly to his social skills as he's (mostly) had only good experiences with other dogs. I think he'd become too much of a target at dog parks due to his soft disposition which is why I avoid them and opt to take him for happy outings on lead as well as socialising with other dogs at obedience class.

Best of luck to you and your pup!

Point taken and I didn't want to appear patronizing. I do hope his little dog is OK. It would always be on my mind regarding the outcome.

No that's ok , it is on my mind since the weekend i hope he is ok also, the whole thing was such a shock and happened so quickly from the incident with my dog to being yelled at by the owner - i am fortunate to have Steve from K9 pro only 40 minutes from where i live to get her assessed and get the correct advise/training plan for her

Common sense would assume by most that dogs attending a dog park would be dog safe and wouldn't react aggressively when approached by other dogs as the nature of a dog park is a bit of a free for all for dogs and isn't a place where strict supervision and restraint is expected. If the poodle approached the Lab on the street at large poodle was off leash, Lab on leash then the poodle owners are 100% at fault, but at a dog park I don't think the owners of an attacking dog have much leg to stand on for attending the park with a DA dog in the first place.

To claim that the dog has never shown aggression before is irrelevant when it has by fact, just attacked and injured or killed another dog!

i will also be looking into a behaviorist/trainer on this issue to make sure i am reading signs correctly by someone qualified :)

Someone experienced with aggression is a must as "one off" behaviours are the most difficult to address the cause which needs deeper scrutiny into other behavioural areas that a good trainer/behavioust will test and and see as contributing factors.

Another vote for Steve Courtney - the man is amazing and has helped me with Ziggy..

We are very lucky to have quite a few awesome trainers here on DOL.

I have never and would never take my dogs to a dog park.I feel very sorry for Georgina,a terrible situation for you....I can relate to how you must feel.I have a reactive collie, large male and a very small Japanese Spitz. The collie I have had since 8weeks,he's never been in any bad situations, just does not like people or dogs outside of our family!I have now accepted the fact he can never go off lead in a public situation.I am fortunate we have a large property, and he gets so much exercise. My little girl Lulu is very friendly but one shake from a large dog could kill her...crazy to take the chance!I very much agree with all of HWs comments, and think sometimes we persevere with activities that can be dangerous to other dogs, or children ,when there are many things we can do besides dog parks etc.Even using a trainer, which I thoroughly recommend,as responsible dog owners we all need to remember many things can trigger a dog to act out of character ,with tragic results!

It was the "It's people like you" comment that I objected to.

I took it that Canetoad meant he/she would carry on as usual with the dog, as in be alert but not treat the dog differently e.g like some wild killing machine. Was it actually said that she/he would take the dog back to the park?

However if Georgina was prepared to keep the dog on leash I see no reason why she shouldn't go to the dog park though I doubt she'd want to. That said, I give my local dog park a big miss.

Now Georgina will meet with K9pro so that's an excellent outcome.
