I know there has been general threads regarding who recommends who in to use of frozen semen but after having had multiple attempts with what was according to the vet/s good quality semen and achieveing nothing I am curious as to who has had success with frozen semen?

If you have had success which vet did you use (specifically for me from Brisbane area)?

I am considering sending a girl interstate after so many failures in Qld has anyone done this and had success?

If you dont wish to publically name a vet feel free to PM.

I think a lot depends on the breed. I have heard wonderful things in some breeds but it seldom works in shelties. I know a number of people who have tried it and there are the successes are few and far between. Chilled semen does seem to work though

Probably not much use to you but a friend of mine has had 2 litters born by frozen semen in the last 6 months and both had 13 pups. Litters were from different sires and dams. Stuart Mason at Monash Vet (Melbourne) did the inseminations.

Stuart Mason at Monash Vet (Melbourne) fabulous results with mt bitches and many others I know.

Semen is only one portion of a successful pregnancy, vet need to read prog results right, skill of the vet, timing etc.

A bitch with cysts in her uterus will not fall pregnant.

When was the last time an in-house blood work machine was calibrated?

Could be miles out as no one seems to calibrates them on a regular basis.

99.9% of my litters have been by frozen semen commencing in the early 90's. In the last few years I have been doing the following and have had 100% success. Lost a complete line because I waited until day 5 and the bitch was out by then this happened over a 2 year period.

You need a good repo vet. As I am in Sydney use Robert Zammit. He is excellent at predicting when mating should take place. Please note every season is different.

Firstly have your girl's thyroid tested. Usually done a month before expecting bitch to come in season. If any problems can be treated. I do this every time I want to mate one of my girls.

As soon as I see blood my girls are very clean straight to the vet for progesterone testing. This usually happens on Day 2. Progesterone test every 2 days. Once mated I then progesterone test again. Using this protocol I have had litters of 12, 10, 8, 7.

Also I always use maiden bitches and my girls are always over 3 years of age. My belief is they are not mature enough in my breed. I want them to have a life too. The litter of 12 was the 3rd litter for this girl she only cycles once every 12 months and she came in unexpectedly and my daughter wanted a pup. As she was nearly 7 though okay she will only have a couple she had the last laugh 6 boys and 6 girls. She is an excellent Mum and has passed that onto her daughters.

Good luck.

My local vet recommended Phil Thomas at Q.V.S. to me. I spoke to him a few weeks ago and he could NOT have been more helpful. He spoke to me in "layman's" terms over the phone, and subsequently sent some invaluable information via email and offered to answer any questions at anytime. :) Have had a number of breeder friends also speak very highly of Phil.

Have used Gerry King at Greencross Redbank Plains for some specialist care but in terms of distance from where I live Phil Thomas is closer so will stay with Phil in this instance.

Thanks guys for the info :)

The semen is supposedly good quality I have used Gerry, Phil and previously Manly road and all have said semen was good.

The bitches have susequently fallen pregnant to either natural matings or fresh AI.

Gerry missed a girl to chilled and next season she had 7 pups to a natural mating based on prog results from the same machine.

Phil had success but the bitch aborted the litter between 5 / 6 weeks :(

I have also noted a lot of 1 pup litters being produced from insemination in qld when the same semen was successful (4 - 8 pups) interstate.

Im seriously considering travelling to use a different vet but worried about the stress on the bitch?

I would think that a late stage abortion is a bitch problem and nothing to do with the quality of the semen. Did you do prog testing through the pregnancy? Ultrasounds?

I was not blaming Phil at all he is a fantastic vet and great at what he does however its a very costly exercise compared to what others pay. I also live about 45 mins - 1 hour away and he has no boarding facilities so it is difficult to get time off work to do all the running around required given its about a 3 hour round trip on a good day ie work to home to phil to home to work.

I agree with a couple on others on here that Phil Thomas at QLD Vet Specialists is the one to use. I have used him several times for frozen semen and fresh semen AI's and had success every time. He is also the person that taught many others how to do semen work. He may be more expensive than others in and around Brisbane, but he is by far the best and you get what you pay for.

Over the years we have had two unsuccessful frozen surgical AI's. The same bitch had 3 live cover litters in between the AI attempts with no issue falling pregnant.

I've heard Phil Thomas is the one to go to here in Brisbane.

I personally know 2 breeders that between them have recently had 3 litters (all around 6-7 pups) with frozen semen TCIs at Monash in Melbourne. I would definitely consider flying for that result particularly for the less invasive TCIs.

I also used Phil for my last litter with semen that was not very good so we used all we had. We got 8 pups. If the mating is super important as it was for me ( the only remaining semen left in the world from this dog) I was happy to pay whatever to whoever was the best to increase my chance of pups. And Phil was the best according to everyone I spoke to. He was excellent to deal with and I loved that he explains everything fully and so you understand it all too.
