Councils Complain About Dog Laws

I don't really believe in dog training school. If you're going to get a dog, research the type to suit you and your house, if unsure about how to train the dog you're getting, Google. I train all of my dogs and that's the way it should be. You wouldn't let some stranger raise your children their way instead of yours would you? Pits aren't the kinds of dogs you want someone else training; if you aren't a dominant person, don't get a power-breed and save the rest of us having to fight against the idiots who buy and neglect their dogs until they're restless enough to get dominant over you.

Experienced reputable dog trainers know more about dog training than the average person. My Rottweiler and I had one on one training lessons with a brilliant trainer. I doubt my dog would have responded instantly to my commands had we not learned everything together. I wouldn't rely on Google to teach me this.

We send our children to school to learn, so yes we do rely on strangers to teach our children. We don't rely on Google.

Dog training has nothing to do with whether or not you're a dominant person. It's about knowing how to train and working with your dog.

I don't know how to respond to your ^ bolded comment, words fail me.

I wouldn't rely on Google either, if that's what you're implying however to see how others have done it if you don't have friends with Pits who else do you ask, hmm? It doesn't hurt to look up tips and tricks for those who've never worked with dogs in that way before.

I was raised around Pits and Rotti's and Boxer's German Shepards etc I've seen how to train them and what ways work best. It's my opinion that I've gotten from personal experience so if words fail you then I'm sorry but it's not my fault. I don't use trainers no matter how reputable they might be because my dog's will learn from me and I'll work on commands until they get it right or until I do. Have you worked a lot with these kinds of dogs up close?

And when I said specifically "a stranger raise your children" in no way did I mean school. There are a lot of things school can't or flat out won't teach - RAISE not EDUCATE.

How does training a dog work if you're stammering and nervous and acting like you're afraid of it? Sorry for voicing my opinion but it's what I know and it's not let me down once.

What leads you to believe that CavNrott was "stammering and nervous and acting like you're afraid of it?"

Going to dog training is not about the trainer training the dog. Rather, it is about them teaching the owner how to best to teach/work with their dog. I'm more concerned about people who 'know it all' than those who seek some good-quality training help.

My Aunt used to take in dogs and train them. She owned Woombah Kennel's in NSW i'm pretty sure it's called but yeah I mainly learned from her and I suppose it'd be very different to how dogs are trained these days considering i'm sure she was born in the 40's lol.

As for anyone knowledgeable it's only my one aunt and 9 uncle's to choose from and if i can't get onto them or what i want I usually find what I need on Google even if it's a phone number but I rarely use it because most of it is carved into my brain now :) One of my mate's is a dog trainer too though, well, none of it ever helps unfortunately if you get my drift! lol. Not sure if dog trainer, human trainer or dog walker. I let her take my boy for a day and she came back exhausted, not the other way around.

Is everything I post going to be taken out of context or what? Before you go snapping at me re-read what I said. At no point did I even marginally imply I was describing CavNrott's training. It was a question. READ.

Most dog trainers don't focus on training dogs. They focus on training the dog's owners to train their dogs.

I'd never recommend an owner send their dog away for training. However, seeking instruction from someone knowledgeable in dog training, especially as a novice seems no more than smart thinking to me.

Exactly, all my dogs go to obedience training and we have also had one on one with specialised trainers. They teach you how to handle your dog.. They don't teach the dog anything.

That is my boy in the background - pound bull breed and my current foster girl in the front..

He is at CCD level at our obedience club (one level up from advanced). She starts obedience at the same club next term.

It can be very useful to get help from other trainers. There is a wide range of trainers and disciplines, and nobody knows everything. Expertise of course varies, from local dog clubs to private trainers, as does the expense.

At the very least it can be useful to have the opinion of a neutral party who can see things that you cannot. And if you are having a problem that is more serious than you have the tools to deal with, trainers can help with a plan of action to help.

Even top level competitors get instruction from others for training their dog and go to seminars, dog training is constantly evolving.

I think when this is your 9th post on a new forum, it's time to maybe take a step back and a deep breath. DOL is one of those forums that really benefits from some lurking from its new members. Your opinions so far have been pretty out there and sometimes not really in line with what DOL is all about.

Also what on earth is a ~power breed~ and where can I get one

I've actually done all three. With previous dogs I've gone to training club and learned a lot plus the dig learns to work under distraction. With my present dog I've gone to private sessions at a few different trainers. My present trainer and I both work with Jake as well as her training me.

The place I go does a lot of boarding training. Jake had to go into kennels whilst I went away and he got training as well. He did improve and he also formed a bond with my trainer, he now wags his tail and goes of his own accord to greet her. So I think there is a lot of variability out there in training schools and boarding establishments but I actually do think it can work. Has with my dog and I would have been staunchly in the camp that wouldn't have supported boarding training. He is definitely a power breed????.

I'm am replying to the bolded parts ^. I don't believe seeing how to train dogs comes close to knowing how to train. You need to be actively involved in hands on working with the dog/s.

Yes, I've worked at lot with German ShepHERDS (correct spelling of the breed) and with Rottweilers. Yep, right up close. I worked hands on with the dogs.

I'm not sure how you figure I'd be stammering, nervous and acting afraid. I was quite confident with what I was doing with the dogs.

Mandatory training wouldn't be simple. I don't think there's any state-recognized credential for dog trainers (does any state have one?). Some excellent trainers have learned through picking up technique here and there, reading, etc., but not an organized course of study. There are lots of people who have watched CM videos and think they are Dog Whisperers. How are you going to make sure that the problem people with potential problem dogs go to trainers who will actually help?
