Thanks for all of cookie's(this puppy named cookie) lovers, he is now health and active, I will keep update his status everyday for few days.

Hi there, I just bought a golden retriever puppy yesterday from a famous chain pet store. My wife and I thought this poor little thing was so unhappy so we decided to bring him home since we bought a house and ready to have a pet.

Last night when the puppy arrived to our home, he was so unhappy and sad, also lay down on the floor. We understand this is normal especially a puppy to a new environment. We observed his 1st poo, it has the general shape at the front-mid but bloody at the end of the poo. We started to think he is ill, we observed today as well, all 4 times poo are with blood in the end.

They guaranteed the pup they sell is healthy for limited time, in this case, is the pup healthy? I did research for information about bloody poo and we are worry about the pup.

Their shop has their own recommend vet check for the pup and they gave some metrogyl 200mg for the pup to apply. In this stage, what should I do? Go for another vet check? Wait for few days?

Sorry about poor English.

Anything recommend appreciated.

Sorry to hear about your sick puppy. Unfortunately, I do not have any medical background and can't give informed advice. Hope some other dol-ers will respond soon.

Was the puppy examined by a vet? Or only by the shop owners? I would take the puppy to a vet as soon as possible.

I took him to vet for a pup check today, it is free because it is the pet shop recommended vet-check. The vet thought the cause of bloody poo is stress/new environment and gave the metrogyl to apply.

I should trust the vet but I just worry about him.

poor little thing was so unhappy

It was probably sick there too. You are entitled to get your money back as puppies are supposed to be fit and healthy when sold. In Victoria they're also supposed to be 8 weeks old and micro chipped.

If you take the puppy back - you might be able to get one from somewhere more reliable than a pet shop. You should at least get them to pay your vet fees.

The pup is 11week when sold. I am waiting for his morning poo to see if any improvement otherwise I will go to vet/another vet to make sure he is fine. I won't get the refund from them. If vet proved he is sick, I have the right to ask the pet store pay all the fee.(?not sure, make sense for me). I can't imagine what they are gonna do with the pup if I accept refund. Probably disappear forever. Hopefully not.

At least I will check how' he's going this morning.

Blood in a pup's stool can mean many things... some benign, and some life threatening.

If you can, take a sample of the poo to the vet with you, so they can see the extent of the issue.

It could be anything from the pup straining to pass the poo and making a small tear in the anal passage - in which case the blood will be bright red and look more like a smear across the poo - to a case of worms, to some sort of haemorrhagic gut disease like Parvo. There are tests that the vet can run for things like Giardia/Coccidia and Parvo - I would have those tests done on the poo sample you take in just to be completely sure of what you are dealing with.

How is the pup's overall demeanour? Is he eating, drinking, and playing like a normal and healthy pup? If not - he needs to see a vet earlier rather than later.

How upsetting.

Stress & a new environment would not cause a sad, lethargic puppy with blood in the stools.

A healthy puppy raised in a good way would be exploring your home, want lots of cuddles & be excited about it all even if a little nervous or cautious for a very short hour or so.

I would go to another vet today. The small amount for a consult would be worth it.

Carry your puppy in just in case it has anything the other dogs could catch. Take a poo sample with you to show the vet in a small, clean container or plastic bag.

Do this today & report back to the shop if it is anything serious & see what happens from there.

Hope it is nothing too bad. Let us know how your puppy is.

My 8 week old golden retriever puppy came home on Tuesday and after a good hour long trip in the car was still awake and ran around like a maniac for 2-3 more hours before finally getting tired, so, no, not normal to be so stressed coming home, but then she didn't come from a pet shop, and I suppose the different environment may affect that. It does sound like the puppy is sick and has been since it was there though.

My 5 year old Golden Retriever had a little bit of blood in her poo when she came home as a puppy and so I rushed to the vet. It was nothing serious in her case, but it could easily have been, and I never regretted taking her. In her case it was just one bad poo, not several, and she was happy and bright and eating normally, just the poo was unusual.

I agree with the other advice you have received and I hope you take it to a vet and everything is ok.

I would be heading straight to a vet not affiliated with the pet store for a second opinion. This does not sound like a healthy puppy and as others have said puppies can go downhill very fast.

I hope your puppy gets better and I hope you share this story with your friends and family

Yes it's very sad seeing puppies in pet stores but as long as people keep buying them the pet stores will continue to sell them.

Puppies in pet stores generally come from puppy farms where only the dogs basic health requirements are attended to and mental stimulation and socialisation is little to none as they are kept in cages most of the time, this includes the puppies first 8 weeks of life.

Ethical breeders will simply not allow their puppies to be kept in pet stores and sold to the first person that comes along. They do health testing on the parents to minimise the risk of genetic diseases or defects in the puppies and provide plenty of socialisation so they will become great family pets. With that they also make sure that potential puppy owners are well equipped to handle the needs of their particular breed which reduces the chance of them being resold or surrendered when they become adults.

I know that you have your puppy now and I hope he turns out to be everything you want in a dog but by sharing your experience you might prevent someone else going through the same thing.

TAKE YOUR PUPPY TO THE VET NOW

This is a baby. He is ill. At this age, they can do downhill VERY quickly. Better safe than sorry.

YES YES YES.

ANOTHER YES. This pup needs to be taken to a vet not affiliated with the pet shop you bought him from. Take a sample of the bloody poo with you to the vet. This will help the vet diagnose what the problem is and prescribe medication for the puppy. Put a small amount of the poo in a clean jar or a zip lock plastic bag.

Unfortunately you are not able to ask the pup's breeder for advice. This is one of the problems with pups bought from a pet shop.

Your puppy did not look well in the pet shop. There is a good chance it's from a puppy farm and their vet and the puppy shop and the farm do not care about your puppy being healthy. They will lie to you just to make you buy and leave.

See a different vet.

If you post here - what suburb / area / city you are in - I am sure someone will recommend a vet near you.

I don't understand why you would buy a puppy and ask questions here if you're not willing to look after it or listen to the advice we give. The new vet should be able to advise about follow up vaccinations, worming, flea treatment, and puppy pre-school - so that your puppy learns how to play nice with other dogs and people and you learn something more about looking after it.

You might also want to join Ian Dunbar's Dog Star Daily and read the digital text book about raising a puppy.

Things that could be wrong include Parvo (death to puppies who don't get treated immediately) and obstruction like a piece of bone stuck in the gut and making it bleed.

Yes.

And cut loose the vet too. Find your own family vet now. If you post your approximate location, people will be able to suggest great vets they take their dogs to. *edit snap Mrs RB*

The store would have up-sold you the food they feed or you've jumped into a new diet. You very well may have fed far too much, or totally over done it with treats etc.

Or it could be serious stuff happening, the pups are kept in inappropriate conditions and the hygiene is only as good as the person who cleans the boxes they live in, the bowls they use and the toys they have.

Which doesn't matter anyway, because a pup with runny poo can become dehydrated in a few hours even without disease involved so any diarrhoea is urgent.

You need a good vet. One of your own who you can go to for the rest of your pup's life.

Interesting that the vet gave out Metrogyl for the pup... seems they suspect Giarda or the like...

You really need to see a vet not affiliated in any way with the pet store. Take a poo sample with the blood and have it tested for specifically Giardia/Coccidia (fecal float - will also show any other worm infestations), and Parvo.

The tests are not overy cheap, but not overly expensive either - and are a small price to pa when you consider that it's for your pup's health and well being that you find out exactly what is wrong and get it treated quickly.
