A MINNESOTA town has literally gone to the dogs, electing a canine as their mayor.

Perhaps it was his shiny, flowing locks or his lovable friendly nature. Whatever the reason, Duke is now the honorary mayor of Cormorant.

Despite not having an election campaign, the four legged seven-year-old won by a landslide according to locals.

The Independent reported that 12 people in Cormorant each paid a dollar to cast the votes that saw Duke emerge as the overall winner.

Voters said Duke guards the town and makes the community safer, even ensuring cars do not break the speed limit.

“He won by a landslide. He doesn’t know how to handle this publicity,” resident Tricia Maloney told WDAY6 .

“Poor Richard Sherbrook that owns the Cormorant Store, he didn’t even have half as many votes as Duke did.”

After winning, Duke was pampered with five hours of grooming and given a new outfit, making sure he will look his best when he is officially sworn in as mayor in a ceremony that will take place on Saturday.

Already enjoying the perks of public life Duke was donated a one year supply of dog food in lieu of a salary.

Anything dogs can do, cats can do. In US city, Seattle, the Mayor turned City Hall into Kitty Hall for the day & brought in cats & kittens from the Animal Shelter for adoption.

His replacement Mayor for the day took over his office... very cute little guy (click enlarge):

Yes it is a Pyrenean.

Maremma are actually not that common in the US (though and gaining more popularity slowly as working LGD). Pyrs (Great Pyrenees) are actually a lot more common there. The two breeds are more or less reversed compared to Australia .
