A 35-year-old man has been charged after he was allegedly seen dragging his dog behind his vehicle while reaching speeds of up to 70km/h.

Between 2.30pm and 3pm on Tuesday, police say the man pulled the dog behind his vehicle through the streets of the Pilbara town of Wickham for about five kilometres on bitumen road and back tracks.

He then took the dog to the beach where, in an alleged attempt to ease its burns, he put the dog in sea water. He then took the dog home and allegedly covered it in a mixture of tea tree oil and water.

Police say the salt water and oil caused undue suffering and aggravated the injuries.

Roebourne police arrested the man and took the dog to Karratha Veterinary Hospital, where it is being treated for severe burns to about 20 per cent of its body, including its eyes, ears, mouth and paws, as well as bleeding.

The injuries are serious but are not believed to be life threatening.

The man has been bailed to appear in the Karratha Magistrates Court on October 22.
