I've been to the vet this morning, CavNrott, and the vet has taken bloods to check liver and kidney function. I have been under the impression that Ranitidine (zantac) was to help with the nausea and the Carafate was supposed to line his stomach and assist in preventing irritation. The Cisapride was to help with speeding up the passage of food so nothing hung around turning gaseous??

I am very much a lay person and have to rely on what the vets tell me.

I am feeling sick and horrible at the thought we may not have been doing our best for Danny. He has been to the vet several times in the just the past few weeks, because he has an ulcer on his eye. This has finally started to shrink, but that has nothing to do with his gut problems, just adds to his general level of discomfort.

He has just had a little bit of icecream and yoghurt, so hopefully he will keep that down.

Yet to hear from the vet re the blood results, but that shouldn't be too long as they are done in-house.

I've attached a photo of Danny and me chillin' on the couch yesterday.

DDD I don't think anyone could do more for their sick dog than you're doing for Danny. Don't second guess yourself or suspect you're doing anything less than you could possibly be doing. He's a lucky boy to have you taking care of him.

Zantac causes me nausea. I felt nauseous when taking it and thought I hadn't taken enough so took another one. If my daughter-in-law hadn't told me Zantac made both her and her sister nauseous I'd have persisted with it. Once I stopped taking it the nausea ceased. My GP who prescribed the Zantac didn't mention anything about possible nausea.

Maybe ask your regular vet if Maxalon might help Danny to feel more like eating. When my Rottie was taking a lot of medication for osteosarcoma she was prescribed Maxalon by the oncologist to combat the nausea. It's worth a try DDD. Anything that can get Danny eating again will not only help him but will reduce your stress level. Sometimes vets and human doctors don't consider the side effects of nausea when they prescribe meds.

It's good news to hear Danny's eye is starting to heal.

I tend to agree that if there is a possibility of nausea then a treatment trial for it is worthwhile. While ranitidine and carafate help with acid secretion neither have an anti-nausea effect. The most effective treatment is probably maropitant (Cerenia) but it is also the most expensive however I would often start here for a trial. Other meds like Stemetil and Maxalon are also used but can also have some interactions and side effects. A drug called mirtazapine is often used as it reduces nausea and can stimulate appetite. Whether these are appropriate for Danny will require discussion with your vet or specialist. If he has also been praying he may even need some pain relief.

:grouphug: to you and Danny.

When the kids (dogs) were little I used to use goats milk as a treat. They loved it.

Perhaps some goats milk with nutrigel and honey?

Goats milk and maunka honey ? ------------ YES YES YES. Now to see if he can keep it down. I decided to not push it too hard so left out the nutrigel. They've never been particularly keen on that, but if he manages to keep this little bit down, I will try that later. (I did have to get him started by dipping my finger in and rubbing his gums -LOL.) He is now rolled up in a donut bed having a little groom.

Rappie, I told the vet about his play bowing and he says that he couldn't get any reaction to indicate that he is in pain. He did say that he was difficult to judge in that way, because he never yelped or whinged and was just such a good dog. Maybe he WAS just playbowing, but I've never really noticed that he does that and having had a dog, many many years ago, suffer from pancreatitis, I am very wary when I see dogs doing that. He'll give stretches when he gets up from time to time, but that's about it.

Thank you for the meds suggestions and I'll be asking my vet when he calls me back with the blood results. We did try an appetite stimulant a little while back, but it didn't make any difference; because he was already on so many meds three times a day, I didn't keep up with it.

I on Maxalon for nausea, do give him a go on it. It really works.

Rappie says that there are side affects :(. Mind you if they are side affects that take a while to show themselves, I would be giving it a go, considering his age. Waiting for the vet to call.

I think the main thing for Danny is to get rid of his nausea and restore an appetite.

No, I can not agree with this. from the moment danny became poorly, you have made every effort to try to improve everything for him.

Please try not to think otherwise.

Blood tests might give more info too.

HUGS xxxxx

I take Pantaprozole (I hope I got that right) and it does work to keep the acid down, but does nothing for nausea and I still need to use Gaviscon occasionally to settle things. I imagine Danny's meds are similar.

I've heard that dairy products can cause inflammation, so the milk, ice cream, etc. may not be helping his stomach. That said, if he'll eat it ...

Emmylou has a very high pain tolerance, so it took me quite a bit of work to convince the vet that she needed medication for it. Also, when at the vet, she's so stressed about being there that she doesn't behave at all normally. I know her back hurts her, but she has rarely yelped or show any sign of pain that anyone who didn't know her well would recognise as such.

Is there a veterinary gastroenterologist that you could get a referral to? I don't doubt that your vet is doing his best, but it doesn't seem to be working and it might be time for a new set of eyes on the situation.

Vet rang while I was out walking - luckily I took my phone with me and I actually heard it. Well to be totally honest, I became aware of a noise and was wondering what it was. Took a while for me to realise it was the phone. :(:(

All result good and with some better than before. Angus did go through everything for me just summarising here. We then discussed the need to address his nausea. His first suggestion ((RAPPIE TAKE A BOW ) was Cerenia. I am waiting to hear from him to see if he has any in stock and hopefully I'll be able to get started on that without delay.

The extraordinary thing is that Danny polished the dregs of my Chinese take away lunch after he woke from his Goats Milk and Honey induced sleep and then when I heated up the remainer for a snack, I had to give him that as well.

What a diet for dog LOL. But as Nickyp says, if he will eat it . . . .

BTW, Nickyp, I did try the ginger nut biscuits. Because he enjoys milky sugary tea I broke them up and soaked them in a little bit of tea. He loved it ..... the tea that is. Wouldn't eat the biscuits :(, but then he wouldn't eat the Arrowroot ones either.

I am getting very excited at the prospect of his nausea being brought under control. He is [almost] a different dog from this morning, since he has had a little bit to eat. And so far kept it down.

Later: I had to rush off down to the vet to get the Cerenia. Fiingers/everything crossed that this will be the magic bullet.

Oh, . Thank you VM, I had to keep pulling back on the accelerator on the way home, I was in such a hurry to give him his first tablet. Yes!! I managed to give him a half small tablet buried in pearnut butter :( . Early night with a book, I think. That way he will be resting and not worried about losing me.

Rappie, is the house next door to you for sale?
