Pug Anal Glands

Hi all

I have a pure bred pug. After much research and many anal gland drainages, I have had enough.

The dog stinks constantly sprays at every thing, including people.

The glands must come out.

On making several enquiries to vets it became surprisingly obvious that not many had done the operation before.

Also the price that some vets indicated it may cost ranged from $500 to $1000.

Can any body recommend a competent Melbourne Vet that knows the operation and has realistic prices

I have no knowledge about the removal of anal sacs but the cost of any surgery is rarely less than $500. It costs more than that for my dog's dental scale and clean. The cost of a GA is expensive and any vet would probably require pre anaesthetic testing to be done. This is for the safety of your dog, particularly as he is a brachycephalic breed. These tests are extra to the cost of surgery.

I would be surprised if you would pay less than $1500-2000 for this surgery. Indeed you may need a specialist vet to perform it. There may also be a risk of fecal incontinence after such a surgery. You definitely need to discuss it with a competent vet.

Make some enquiries at the Werribee Teaching Hospital. They should be able to throw some light on the subject. Another option is to have your vet refer you to the Veterinary Specialist Centre. They're in Glen Waverley and Essendon. The vet surgeons there are very knowledgeable. Hopefully someone on here with more knowledge will chime in.

In the mid 90s I had a cattle dog that had her anal glands removed. The surgery was less than a spay in price and was done by my local vet. He said it was a simple procedure.

I think you just need to ring around some recommended vets.

Good Post, C&R.

Anal gland removal is a nasty op ..very painful , and messy ....I hope you find the right vet .

( I am guessing you have made all the dietary changes ...talked with the breeder, to se if they know of suitable treatment/vets . )

is your dog a happy and friendly and relaxed dog? it is most unusual for dogs to knowingly spray people .... or is this happening when dog is being handled ..just leaking out ? .Sounds very uncomfortable .:(

terryg: Have you tried including a teaspoon of psyllium husks with your dog's meals. This adds fibre and firms up the stool so the glands should empty when the dog defecates.

Like Perse, I've been lead to believe the surgery is intricate and the after effects would certainly be very painful until complete healing takes place.

my ridgeback has had his removed. He had issues with going to the toilet for a month or so after the op due to scar tissue but 15 months post op he is much better. Also our oncologist that looked after my GSD said that removing them was the best thing we could of done as a percentage of cronic anal gland issues become cancerous.

Pugs are well known for having leaky anal glands. Breathing and walking are enough to set some of them off! It seems to be related to their unique structure. I have to say, hearing puggy gland stories has been enough to put me off owning one, blerk.

ETA......good luck with your pup :)
