Hi this particular journal is discontinued, consolidated journal and work in progress updates can be found here.

Hi, our intro and bg thread is here:

http://www.dolforums.com.au/topic/263459-hi-from-melbourne/

More pictures of my gorgeous mystery mutt. She was with the foster carer for a couple of months after being in the pound for a few months (found pick up, then PTS list 3 times D:) and I adopted her in feb 2015. Not many pics of her at her worst because I'm generally trying to coax her out of a crawl or submissive pee, but we have some very-worried pictures. They kind of understated some issues and overstated others when I got her but we're working through it with trainers and behaviourists and obedience classes.

Most of our behavioural work is dog reactivity/scared after being attacked in April 2015 (see posts further down)

I see there's a picture cap per post. I wasn't sure how it works so I thought I would put each milestone picture set in a different post...

She has weird body proportions:

Pictures from her foster carer from so-scared-and-hiding-all-night to coming-out-of-her-shell

(I really want to take her to some water sometime when it is warmer and she's less reactive/up to it...)

Foster carers did a great job

This picture is from me meeting her - she took my beef, then bayed at me, then took more XD

I love this picture...it's the first photo I took after picking her up:

Sorry many of my pics are from the mobile so not great. Hope to take proper ones to show how gorgeous she is when i work out how to use my nikon (what's the dummy setting for dog pics D:)

First few weeks home (not pictured, no lead training, no commands. Pictured: rampant plant destruction but I hated that plant anyway)

(I don't reinforce fetch as much as I should, I confess we both prefer never ending cuddles, but she really picks things up quickly)

Turns out she's scared of tiny little dinosaurs

I just like this picture, her spots are really gorgeous:

Less happy pictures, but important for records :( This is when I started keeping a log - the day after the dog attack and vet trip:

tumblr_nmy7yf65Qc1qh8fino1_250.png

I also took pictures of her wounds, but that I will link: Link

They don't look so big in the day light, but at night and when you're literally covered in blood... :(

If you want to read up on the dog attack, I posted my thoughts on tumblr. A lot of it I wrote while in shock and waiting for ranger/people/help/the vet/unable to sleep.

I bought her a car...so we could go to behavoural classes...

(Still a bit out of sorts, but alright after a week)

tumblr_nngpsqtedf1qh8fino1_500.png

Every thursday I go to a Best Friends at night, while it is quiet and puppy classes are on. We sit quietly in a circle and let Thistle inspect strangers and the odd puppy. However, sometimes people we don't know will come up with their dogs. So I got her this vest to just save time in explaining "don't rush over with your bouncy dog, no bouncy dogs, no barking dogs, no little dogs and especially no barking bouncy little dogs including puppies calm very young puppies only"

tumblr_no0x726EgW1qh8fino2_250.png

She really likes young puppies and lactated for rescue puppies while with foster carer:

She really doesn't like it when i take pictures cause it means i'm not patting

tumblr_np27msvzK71qh8fino1_500.jpg

tumblr_inline_nql9ujvvCQ1qg8voh_500.jpg

She was bone protective but we turned it into a game so now I can come close or take the bone (or something not meant to be eaten) without worry. The only thing she'd growl at me over:

tumblr_np5a7sFwOH1qh8fino1_500.jpg

After 4 hours of hiking she was voluntarily going near a male mate and stranger to her:

tumblr_npkfwlOtxQ1qh8fino6_500.jpg

I need a bigger pack for when we go camping...one with a handle incase of stuff she needs help with

tumblr_npkfwlOtxQ1qh8fino3_500.jpg

This ball is her favourite ball:

tumblr_npvsij9iAI1qh8fino1_500.jpg

Waiting for me to throw the ball:

Wait/recall practice:

tumblr_nqkxcfDaUQ1qh8fino1_500.jpg

tumblr_nqkx7beHOp1qh8fino2_500.jpg

(actually quite hard because she doesn't like being so far away...)

Playing puppy sounds for lols:

Aaaand you are now caught up to the 4 months 2 weeks and 5 days I've had her, but who's counting ;P

wow - she look a lot like a catahoula leopard dog.

I don't think there are many of those in Australia.

Or she could be something merle with a short coat. But I don't even see Koolies like that tho some are close maybe a Koolie combined with a stumpy tail cattle dog and a bull arab? Who knows. Very cute tho.

There are catahoulas up North, being used in hunting dog breeding I am told.

She would be welcome in any Bull Arab X social group I think. There is a rescue group named Bull Arabs The Pawfect Companion which rehomes hunting mixes and has a huge membership of owners who share on Facebook. there are a few BA X catahoulas in there.

Thistle is a gorgeous girl. I am fostering a Bull Arab X with anxiety issues, he is such a sweetie. This is Shadow (aka Dodo).

Trying to fix link,,,why does pic show on preview post but not post??? GRRR Hang in there....

Thistle is a very very fortunate girl - she has owners who do endeavour to understand how SHE thinks - and who give her lots of good stuff like hikes and cuddles :)

She's a very handsome looking dog, I can't see what you mean about weird body proportions. I can see a bull breed in her and she might have Dane and Greyhound (or Whippet) in there too, and who knows what else!

She's actually from midland nsw (got shuffled between some council pounds for a few months, ended up in Sunraysia border when the vic rescue noticed her. So i reckon at this time has spent half her life in pound/with the foster) so I wouldn't say it is impossible for her to not have catahoula! Damn shame the DNA test doesn't check for it, I suspect it's likely because with the blue merle id have thought it was a strong marker :x her papers say Great Dane x but...that was the rescue guessing cause you got to write something.

Aww what a sweetie <3 her two best friends in the rescue were bull arab x bull terriers. They were both gorgeous. One had to be PTS in the end for ppl and dog aggression but the other one was also very scared! He got adopted a couple of days before I met thistle, I'm so glad. I understand he goes to the beach a lot. I hope for them to catch up again at the Christmas the rescue holds!

She looks identical to the litter brother of my dog (who looks nothing like yours) haha

That's Lenny, Rosie's brother at Lure Coursing at 8 months old or so.

She really does look a tad catahoula crossed with who knows what - maybe they were bred for pigging ?

Lots of catahoula cross bull arabs near me. They are on gumtree most days and quite a few go through the RSPCA. Bred for hunting/piggin. There is a prolific breeder up near Gladstone as well apparently. There was a 6mth male on GT just this morning. I have also seen a litter of what looked like Dane cross catahoula go through the RSPCA a while back. They looked a lot like Thistle. A bit heavier but very similar face. I met a mature male and he was lovely. More reactive and sensitive than their other Dane but not overly so. It's so nice to see her happy.

Not sure. Mildura is Sunraysia area tho ain't it? Lots of catahoula mixes up that way?

Edit: in case you didn't see it, she was from rural nsw originally and just got moved through pounds for a few months :(
