Is There Any People Your Dog Can't Stand?

22 posts in this topic

We have a neighbour we don't get along with. We did initially, but things went sour (of all things, when we asked him to cleaned up after his dog when it poops on our front lawn). He denied this, and has spent the last year slandering us to anyone and everyone. So we don't talk to him anymore.

What's strange is our malamute's reaction to him. He's never really liked him, even when he used to be okay. But lately, if our dog hears him creeping around the side of his house, our boy gets raised hackles and barks, and he never gets like that with anyone! Our other neighbour that we get along great with, he never barks at her or her son, he loves them. He'll often go down to the sandpit where he can put his paws up on the fence and get a pat. The only time he barks at her house is when there is someone visiting he's never heard/seen before (she had a visitor the other day that he didn't know, he popped his head over the fence and our boy went ballistic).

So I wonder if it's that he picks up on our dislike of our bad neighbour, or if he's always known something we didn't?!

The hackles thing, that's new. Does anyone else have a dog that reacts this way to certain people?

Nope I have greyhounds they love everyone, Stan wouldn't care if they were an axe murderer.

Rosie hides from my brother, he wants so badly to win her over though so he sucks up to her with all he's got. From day dot she wanted nothing to do with him, we thought just let her go and she will come good but over 2 years later nothing. She let him pat her a few times but then skittered if he moved. Loved my partner from the second she saw him though.

She's got some pretty big gaps in her early socialisation though.

Sounds like Gus. We joke if anyone broke in he would help them out with the TV and bring them the smaller valuables.

Claudia our chi dislikes all our guests except my mum, brother and my kids two best friends. Don't know why.

We adopted her at 8months old, she was an ex show dog, perhaps she wasn't socialised properly early on, she is a very confident dog and nothing bad has happened to her here.

My dog loves everyone. My cat hates most people BUT will eventually come and say hello and with people she knows well she won't run away when they arrive. Except my mum. My mum, who she lived with for the first 5 years of life, and used to sleep on her lap in the chair. Then, I moved out and took my cat and now if she so much as hears my mum she will hide in the wardrobe and not come out.

Max, the huge mixed-breed down the road was home alone when thieves went thro' his house. But he happily joined in the looting. The thieves emptied the fridge of 'tasties' & closed him in the garden shed to have a feast. He was burping for hours afterwards. His owners said they could believe Max stood beside the crooks helping them choose what he liked best from the fridge.

Dogs don't necessarily dislike someone but may react to them being a smoker, strong perfume, health issues ,body odor .

My dogs are very social but don't feel relaxed around smokers & this is evident in the show ring with many dogs that react to judges who smoke .

There was a judge that wore very strong perfume & many dogs disliked her .

I like to joke that dozer would do this... But he's actually quite a good judge of character and has taken a dislike to one person so far, it was someone who was casing out our car!

Stan would love that! The only thing that would upset him is if they drove off without him, he loves going in the car

Ignoring her initial uncertain and cautious behaviour around strangers, I haven't yet found anyone she truely can't stand. But then, I prevent ppl I think she won't like from bothering her.

That said, she has been exceptionally slow on warming up to one of our trainers - even for her.

Justice thinks every person he sees is an opportunity for pats and treats.. lol. The only person he wasn't comfortable around was a colleague's child who was a bit of a nightmare and even though he was about 7, would stand on his mother's legs and jump and punch her and pretty much just run amok. Justice didn't react badly toward him though, just tried to keep out of his way. The kid didn't get to visit again.

A bit off topic, but our cat loves my hubby, but I feed her, clean the litter tray & brush her, but she will only snuggle up to him (she is a rescue).

Nike does not like one of my cousins. He's the only person I worry about her having a go at. She's always been uneasy around youngish men because she was badly startled by one of my younger brother's friends when she was young, and she doesn't have the best nerves.

I think it's made worse by the fact my cousin isn't particularly good with dogs, and I think he gets a bit nervous around her. His body language puts her on edge, and so she gets locked in the crate when he comes over.

I had a Hungarian friend who used to ecoke a leery reaction from my dogs at the time (Rottweilers)... she used to use a lot of paprika in her cooking, and must have had a strange scent as a result...

The dogs quickly warmed up to her when she brought them over a yummy Hungarian meatloaf to share though... lol! From that point on, they were all over her like a rash whenever she came to visit!

Ernie would not only open the door but point them to the refrigerator for a cold beer.

Although it must be said, he's got a fearsome bark and mighty small tolerance for changes to the neighbours routines.

Chloe has yet to meet a person she doesn't love , she doesn't even bark at the door knockers selling religion.

Bru on the other hand did bark at the door knockers and sounded fierce , but once they saw his body wagging behind the door the game was up ????

One time he took an instant dislike to a tradie who came to quote for a job. He normally loved everyone so it's was very strange, he positioned himself outside DS door and refused to move or stop barking at the guy until he left.

It was very out of character for him.

Ps the guys quote was crazy so I like to think he had good judgement ????????

Yes one of the Border Collies I don't trust with a certain person. I am pretty sure he would have a go given a chance. Said person knows not to bother him at all.
