Just In Case You Didn’T Know .....

Yesterday my puppy, Tamar, went to the vets to have a dental. Now Tamar isn’t exactly a puppy as she is 12 years of age, but I call her my puppy because she is my only dog (apart from my first two from breeders) who was a puppy when I adopted her 11 and a half years ago  . She still looks like a puppy too.

Poor girl drew the short straw and has always had dreadful teeth (Maltese x Shih Tsu) and eventually she had only her four canines and one or two at the back. Yesterday’s dental ended up with her losing those as well.

So last night, I gave her couple of smalls bowls of icecream to cool down any pain and to give her a treat in any case.

This morning, she ate a normal meal - wolfed it down in fact which in itself is a bit of coup but after having huge rotten teeth removed less than 24 hours ago is pretty impressive, I think.

I well remember many years ago adopting a very elderly dog from a pound who had to have all his teeth removed. That afternoon, he was happily gumming chicken necks in the back yard.

Amazing animals? I think so   :love:

...just in case you didn't know:....there might be very well a correlation between feeding ice-cream and the like and the dreadful teeth condition....

:kissbetter: :kissbetter: Read it again and you will see that I gave it to her as a treat and because of her dental.

sorry, but ice-cream is not an appropriate treat for a dog!

Refer to my previous post regarding your sense of humour. I am pretty sure a bit of ice cream occasionally is not going to be the death of anybody.

An older dog has major oral surgery, is a bit weak and really needing that quick, easy energy after and you're worried about diabetes from a rare treat?

Definitely no need to give them something soft, palatable and cold on a sore mouth, you're right.

don't be so sure ...if the ice-cream has sweetener / Xylitol (because you think it is more healthier than sugar....) just 1 gr can kill a 5 kg dog!

Give it up, mate. You’ve said your lot. Don’t continue to spoil a fun thread paying tribute generally to the amazing creatures that dogs are and specifically to Tamar, a shy little thing who came through a big op safely and well.

And for those who appreciate what this thread is all about, this is why I was amazed that Tamar wolfed down her brekkie this morning. She eats just to stay alive. This is a pic from a few years ago, but she is still the same. She will sit in front of a meal for ages and then walk away.

Unless it's a soft serve from Maccas - then its 100% OK.

ha, ha ...good one :D ...no, our dog gets only dog food and appropriate treats, anyone offering her something else gets shot!...you are warned :D

That's unnecessarily threatening...

Meh - Never mind Steph - I didn't see it that way - and the chances of me ever being in a position to feed Willems dog a treat are about zero.
