Pedigree Papers?

 Share

Recommended Posts

I am awaiting my pup, that is due to be born next week.

Its being flown interstate to me at 8 weeks.

I wanted to know, never having had a papered dog before, when/how do i receive papers, and what do i have to do with them?

Such a newbie question! but have never owned a real pedigree before, as in one with papers.

Imagine knowing nothing! that's where i am at with how to end up with a dog, who's pedigree papers are in my name?

No comments on papers - but just a word to the wise.

There are a lot of members here and if your dog is as rare / hard to come by as you say it is - people will put two and two together and figure out who the breeder is. Heck the breeder might even be reading. If I were you I'd consider editing that third paragraph ;)

Papers will normally arrive some time after the puppy. With my two - one lot was sent directly from the interstate canine association, the second came from the breeder. You may or may not have input into a pedigree name. You will normally have to sign something/fill something in so they can be placed in your name - the exact process seems to be different depending on which canine association you are dealing with. Other than that the only time you need/will require papers is if your intending on competing in dog sports or showing.

1. re the ANKC forms: all the puppies in the litter have to be registered in the name of the breeder (and with his/her prefix) after they are microchipped and before they are 12 weeks old (actually it is 18 months, but it gets more expensive after 3 months). Once registered, the breeder should send the signed registration papers to the purchaser and it is up to the purchaser to fill in and send to their State Kennel Club (along with the appropriate fee(s)) to get the puppy registered in their name.

2. re the microchip forms: all pups should be microchipped and be on a microchip register before they are sold. A "change of ownership" form should accompany the puppy and the new owner should re-register the pup in their name asap.

The microchip forms (2 above) have NOTHING TO DO WITH THE ANKC FORMS, they are quite separate so be careful not to confuse the two

3. you should also receive a copy of your pups vaccination certificate issued by the breeder's vet + various odds and ends like welcome letter, a small amount of food, feeding regime, blanket, toys, puppy rearing notes, honorary breed Club membership etc -- things I call a "goodie bag"

Some breeders will also use a "Contract of Sale"

I am sure I have forgotten something, but that is a start! Good Luck with your baby! If you need someone to answer specific questions. just PM me

Very exciting time. It might be worth having a bit of a look round the Dogs Victoria website Dogs Vic .. And you may find there is a breed club for your breed .. they should be able to help with some information.

I can still remember the excitement of getting my first pedigreed pure bred pup. Oh, and when your pup does arrive .. don't forget to post photos :-).

If its coming form interstate there is no point in checking what Happens with Vicdogs.

It depends on what state you are buying the pup from and the individual breeders usual system. Best to ask the breeder.

Thank you for the replies, and tips;)

microchip register, ive got the hang of. this is going to be dog number 3 in our house. Wanted to get a pup before the others are too old to enjoy it.

So sounds like it may/may not come with papers. I think i shall ask breeder, if it can be named KENNEL NAME/my chosen name. for dog on papers. Seems like a reasonable ask to me.

Breed specific clubs: I live rural, finding A club was very hard. I had a choice of 3, within an hours drive. Visited. Left knowing that style of training is not for me. And i don't own dogs that would enjoy that style. Each to their own though, its good to have choice out there. Want to do obedience, agility, tracking events when pup is old enough.

Mainly been going it alone, and happy with the outcome. But now i have a pedigree! i can enter stuff! And meet others who are dog nuts for the social aspect.

Id really love to have some service, that would lay tracks for me! so i only had to do the track once lol

If the dog is coming from any state but Western Australia, it is a breach of the breeder's obligatons under CC regulations not to supply papers. You need to get the issue clarified before the pup travels.

It may well be but breeder protocols on this issue vary. Some breeders ask for input. Some breeders do not. Some breeders have litter themes and you might get some input, but you might not.

Suggest you ask what the breeder's practice is and if you can provide input. If not, you still get to choose the pet name.

pup is not rare. But not common.

But having found my top dog in Aus IMO, after watching trial after trial where it clean up the trophies. I want one of the pups from THAT dog.

I have seen this play out many times with dog owners. Yes, buying from proven performance lines is smart thinking. However top dogs are not always easy dogs and can be challenging for a novice to deal with. I've seen plenty of disappointed novices who've realised that success isnt' always that easy. Be prepared to work.

I have to say that I think you need to work and work hard on getting a good relationship going with the dog's breeder. No one will know the challenges you're likely to face in raising and training this pup better.

If you buy a puppy from a NSW breeder its very unlikely that it will come with papers. A breeder is not able to register the pup in NSW until it is microchipped which most breeders don't do until just before the pup goes home. The papers are sent to the breeder and are in the breeders name and when the breeder gets them they have to post them onto the buyer .I spoke with a NSW breeder yesterday who told me she has been waiting 6 weeks for her papers to come back after registering them . Some breeders wait until all puppies have gone home before putting the registrations through too.

I no longer have a situation where the puppy buyer can name their own puppy .Ive bred a lot of puppies over the last 40 years and often the name is already taken or the chosen name is often too close to someone else's prefix so its knocked back . You have to register the whole litter on line at one time There is no way you can stop everything and go back to half a dozen people to check that the name you have chosen instead of the one they want is O.K. so now I use a theme and the new owners have no say.

A couple of litters ago I had to change the name the new owner wanted because it was too close to another prefix which Ive had to do often before and the new owners have understood but this owner went nuts about it and accused me of deliberately making a fool of her because the dog had been given what she felt was a horrible name and it took all my skills to defuse the situation and make her see I hadnt named the puppy to have a go at her . She got it [i think] but she is still mad about the name not being the one she wanted.

I will ask the breeder "if its possible" can i have the chosen pet name registered. Its same name for male or female.

I certainly wont cry about it if i cant have the name or give the breeder grief:)

However top dogs are not always easy dogs and can be challenging for a novice to deal with.

I know! I think im ready. My trainer assures me im ready for this challenge, as my 6 and 9yr old working line demo's i can do it.

Im sure he has much knowledge to impart should he chose to. But he's too busy to respond to emails.

thankfully, i am blessed to have great trainers to assist me on this journey:)

Training a very high prey drive dog, to live as a calm pet, is something i specialise in:) all my dogs have off switches. Or id of killed them off i reckon. Lit up when out, couch potatoe when at home is what i like and have so far had.

famous last words lol

You're clearly not a novice then and have put plenty of thought into it.

Best of luck with the new pup!

  • 2 weeks later...

I have breeders ok with my chosen name:)

He's going to send the QLD register papers, as soon as he receives them, generally at 11 weeks of pup age, 3 weeks after i get pup.

We clarified what i am seeking, an pup suitable for IPO work. And that IF there is a choice in gender, i will take a male as first choice, but outside of that, im not overly fussed on its gender. It will travel in a crate with another pup flying to Victoria. Though breeder says pup will behave as if its reared in airports it will be so confident. < we'll see eh?

Only 7 weeks left of a 18 months to wait, and now im running out of patience fast!

Removed the lighting in the garden this weekend. I'll miss my lit up garden:( but it will come back out, when this pup is passed the chewy phase:)
