1.    How many dogs do you have, and what are their names, ages and breeds?

Just the one right now, unfortunately. My saluki girl, Bella, registered name Baghdad Cool Coquette. She's now six.

2.    Do you have plans for a new addition?

Yes, but it may be a couple of years before the plans come to fruition (I hope it will be sooner though). I will be taking on another saluki, with the hope of he or she being the beginning of my journey as a breeder.

3.    Did you have dogs growing up?

Yes, just the one, a golden retriever by the name of Tiggy.

4.    Do you have names saved for any future dogs?

I sure do! My current favourites (with salukis in mind) are Emrys, Pippin, Freyr or Shiloh for a male, or Daphne, Lacey, Soraya or Xanthe for a female.

5.    What is your favourite breed?
Saluki

6.    What is your favourite group?

Hound

7.    Is there a breed that you admire, but probably wouldn't own?

Most giant fluffy breeds. I adore them, but am aware that care and upkeep is expensive, and that some landlords might baulk at the thought of such a large dog in the home. You never know though, maybe one day.

8.    Do you compete with your dogs in any discipline?

Conformation, and trying to get Bella interested in lure coursing.

9.    Have you had an achievement, large or small, with a dog that you're particularly proud of?

Bella used to be extremely nervous on walks, to the point where I had to carry her across roads for safety because she had a tendency to just freeze. She would pull madly trying to get home. Now, she trusts me, and has learned to enjoy her walks. A far cry from her early days, she is now overjoyed at the mention of the ‘w’ word… as it should be.

10.  What games do your dogs most enjoy playing?

Chasing people or dogs that run away from her, sometimes with a butt nip thrown in. She also enjoys playing with balls.

11.  Are you drawn more to male or female dogs?

I’m more drawn to bitches.

12.  What are your favourite coat patterns or colours?

In salukis I love grizzle, especially Irish-marked. I’m also partial to red sables, golds, and black and silvers.

13.  What discipline or sport in the dog world do you find most interesting?

Lure coursing and conformation

14.  What would be your dream household of dogs?

Four salukis and a something else. The something else would either be something big and hulking, like a leonberger, or small and sprightly like a kooikerhondje.

15.  Where is your favourite walk?

The beach near my house at Port Willunga. It’s beautiful, usually near empty of other people and dogs, and largely enclosed by steep cliffs. Perfect.

16.  Does your dog have any funny habits?

She has an irritating habit of shutting herself inside rooms. More than once, I’ve panicked, thinking she’d somehow escaped when I couldn’t find her. Turns out, the daft girl had just shut herself in the toilet.

17.  Do you have a favourite piece of dog gear?

I’m a sucker for a nice martingale collar. I have many.

18.  What are your goals for your dogs?

Bella’s pretty much where I want her to be in most respects now, and I’m very proud. I’d like her to gain her neuter title, and hopefully get the hang of lure coursing.

19.  Have you had what you consider to be a heart dog?

Having only had the one, it’s hard to say (I might fall just as hard for every dog in my future), but Bella could well be mine. Our personalities are a perfect fit, and I feel my heart swell just from looking at her. She’s my special girl.

20. List five things you love about your dog

Her cuddliness... when it suits her, of course!

Her joy and beauty when galloping.

Her silliness and great love of play.

How ecstatic she is to see me, even after short times apart.

How she is quick to my side when I've had anxiety attacks; she rushes to me whenever I am distressed and snuggles up.

And... post a picture of your dog/s

1. How many dogs do you have, and what are their names, ages and breeds?

1 - Kyojin is an American Akita who will be 7 in July

2. Do you have plans for a new addition? No new dogs for us until Kyojin passes. He's suffered numerous health problems his whole life really and is now getting old and hard of hearing as well. So definitely wouldn't get another dog while he is around as that wouldn't be fair to him. We will be looking at getting something totally different next time around, probably something small like a Havanese.

3. Did you have dogs growing up?

Yes, my childhood dogs have been: an Old English Sheepdog, Rottweilers x 2 and Bearded Collies x 2

4. Do you have names saved for any future dogs? Nope, I don't like to pick a pet's name until I see them at least

5. What is your favourite breed? Rottweilers so far, unsure if I'll get to own one again, but will always, always love them.

6. What is your favourite group? Probably more Utility

7. Is there a breed that you admire, but probably wouldn't own? Yes, love Samoyeds and French Bulldogs, and a few others I'm too tired to think of right now, but can't see myself ever owning either of these. They are beautiful though, just not the right breeds for us.

8. Do you compete with your dogs in any discipline? No

9. Have you had an achievement, large or small, with a dog that you're particularly proud of? No

10. What games do your dogs most enjoy playing? Kyojin likes to wrestle I guess, but not very often. He pretty much just sleeps all day and night :(

11. Are you drawn more to male or female dogs? Usually more male pets in general as I've usually found them more snuggly

12. What are your favourite coat patterns or colours? I love really striking looking dogs, so Akitas for me are probably the most handsome. The colours are amazing. Particularly red, white and blacks like my boy is.

13. What discipline or sport in the dog world do you find most interesting? Not really into any of them myself

14. What would be your dream household of dogs? I prefer just one dog at a time

15. Where is your favourite walk? I don't have a favourite one, we just go locally but I'm now terrified of magpies after last summer so basically jump at every sound whenever we go walking now

16. Does your dog have any funny habits? I just love the way he lies upside down with his legs sticking straight up in the air like a dead cochroach, snoring away

17. Do you have a favourite piece of dog gear? Yes looooove our black leather K9 Pro collar and leash. Has lasted us so long.

18. What are your goals for your dogs? No goals for Kyojin other than to keep him comfortable while he lives his days out snoozing in the shade

19. Have you had what you consider to be a heart dog? Yes, my Rottweiler Chelsea. She was my absolute best friend. She died when I was away on Year 8 camp and I've never gotten over not being around to say goodbye to her

20. List five things you love about your dog

How handsome he is

Such a cuddly teddy bear

His radar ears when he pretends he can't hear us

Gentle giant

The sound of his snoring, it's so peaceful listening to him

And... post a picture of your dog/s

Photo's from his 5th birthday

3. Did you have dogs growing up?

Yes, a Pomeranian and a crossbreed, and later on a Rottie

4. Do you have names saved for any future dogs?

Yes, toying around with a few ideas for future puppy, keeping in line with the "Breeze" theme

5. What is your favourite breed?

Dalmatian, Pomeranian, Aussie Shepherd (but I love loads of breeds)

6. What is your favourite group?

Dont have a fav group but I do like Pastoral and Utility and gun dogs too

7. Is there a breed that you admire, but probably wouldn't own?

Dalmatian (because I don't think I'm a capable enough owner for one :(), Saluki, Husky, White Swiss Shepherd

9. Have you had an achievement, large or small, with a dog that you're particularly proud of?

The smallest achievements make me the proudest as my girl was very shy and initially lacking confidence, so simple things like being able to handle walking through a crowd or meeting a stranger makes me very proud. The proudest moment for me is when we were able to overcome ring stress and she was happy and playful in a ring during a trial.

The one I have currently is perfect and I wouldn't change it for the world :)

15. Where is your favourite walk?

Changes all the time but I loved the Great Ocean walk at Apollo bay when we went last year

16. Does your dog have any funny habits?

Rolling in poo! Lol! I do wish she wouldn't!

17. Do you have a favourite piece of dog gear?

Yes our rope leash made by a horse gear company, so soft and easy to hold

18. What are your goals for your dogs?

To live a long, healthy, fulfilled and the most enriched life I can possibly provide

19. Have you had what you consider to be a heart dog?

Yes, my current girl Breeze is definitely my once-in-a-lifetime special heart dog. There will be more heart dogs in my future, but there will be none quite like her. I am so blessed.

20. List five things you love about your dog

I couldn't possibly list just five! But um, her loyalty, her spirit, her gentleness, her unbridled joy, her complexity

And... post a picture of your dog/s

1. How many dogs do you have, and what are their names, ages and breeds?

I only have two now - Crumpet - nearly 9 British Bulldog and Shabby - 12 PBGV

2. Do you have plans for a new addition?

Yes and No - I have been in contact with a breeder but want to wait until my girls are no longer with me - I don't think they would cope with a bouncy puppy in the house - Shab is getting really fragile now and Crump is not tolerant with dogs/puppies in her face

3. Did you have dogs growing up?

Yes - Basset Hounds mainly and a few RSPCA dogs

4. Do you have names saved for any future dogs?

No - I  usually wait until I have a new dog/puppy to try and pick something that suits

5. What is your favourite breed?

No particular favourites but I seem to be drawn to the rarer breeds

6. What is your favourite group?

I'd probably have to go with Hounds

7. Is there a breed that you admire, but probably wouldn't own?

Bull Terriers

8. Do you compete with your dogs in any discipline?

No

9. Have you had an achievement, large or small, with a dog that you're particularly proud of?

Maybe getting Shab to have a recall and leash manners - When I got her she had none whatsoever, she used to pull like a freight train and if she got onto a scent she liked there'd be no way I could have got her back. Now we can go off leash at the beach / dog park and she is fantastic. The only thing she loses control over is Ducks

10. What games do your dogs most enjoy playing

Crumpet loves playing soccer but the ball only lasts about 3 minutes and she loves playing with tug toys ( with me now that Hoover is gone ) and Shab has never shown any interest in any toy, she prefers to play hunting for treats that I hide

11. Are you drawn more to male or female dogs?

I think I would prefer males

12. What are your favourite coat patterns or colours?

I love seeing a lovely shiny black dog - doesn't matter what breed

13. What discipline or sport in the dog world do you find most interesting?

Tracking

14. What would be your dream household of dogs?

To have my Hoover back with the three of us again - my house is just not the same any more

15. Where is your favourite walk?

At the local beach

16. Does your dog have any funny habits?

Crumpet is a screamer - if she can't get what she wants she makes a horrible gurgling scream, usually if she is put outside while I mop the floors or if Shab is on the lounge and she wants to sit in that spot she will stand in front of her and start up with the wailing. She also will not walk on her lead with anyone but me on the other end of it

Shab is a talker - when I get home she always tells me about her day, she also does it with people she knows and likes - I think she might be complaining to them about me

17. Do you have a favourite piece of dog gear?

My treat belt and Crumpets "Help me up " harness

18. What are your goals for your dogs?

To make sure they are loved and looked after for however long they are with me

19. Have you had what you consider to be a heart dog?

My first dog as an adult - Raven was a Rottie who I got when I was 23. She was my shadow. She had a tumour on her oesophagus when she was about 3 years old and I had to let her go when she was on the operating table - I didn't get another dog for about 5 years after I lost her.

20. List five things you love about your dog

Shab                                                                          Crump

Always happy                                                             Complete clown

Absolutely beautiful                                                    Unbelievably Stubborn

Friendly nature with everyone                                    Under the doona winter spooning

Her whole body wiggles when she wags                     Her beautiful squishy face

The easiest dog I have ever owned                            She is incredibly smart

And... post a picture of your dog/s

OT but I reckon this kind of info would be really good for promoting pure bred dog ownership to the general public - demonstrating that pure breds aren't only for showing and aren't all about how they look, but the vast majority are much loved family members who live with ordinary people with ordinqry ordinary lives and are all different and are all still funny and cute and loving and silly like any other pet dog. Plus showing the huge variety of breeds there are.

I don't quite know how the info would be put out there but just thinking out loud.

I think so too, now you mention it. I would think a Facebook page would be most effective, as it probably has more potential to reach people, and posts can be easily shared. I'm sure there are many breeds that could be considered 'hidden gems' and could fit in with a great many families who simply haven't heard of them.

I'll play!

1. How many dogs do you have, and what are their names, ages and breeds?

Ziggy is my Spotted Devil, 10 year old Dalmatian aka AG CH 600 YARROWFELL HIGH SOCIETY CD ADM ADO2 JDM JDO3 GD SD ET

Em is my 6 year old field-bred English Springer Spaniel, WRANGHAM CATHY EARNSHAW RRD AD JDM GD SD

Ginny is Em's daughter, just turned 2, THORNFIELD EMPOWER

2. Do you have plans for a new addition?

No, I've just entered all 3 dogs in an agility trial for the first time and I think that's quite enough to be going on with! However, I am planning a litter with Em later this year and would dearly love to put a pup out on breeders terms. However, I'm yet to find the right home.

3. Did you have dogs growing up?

Yes, mostly farm Kelpies and then Australian Cattle Dogs.

4. Do you have names saved for any future dogs?

Possibly Luna for a working Springer and Ameus for a working Irish or a Dalmatian. I have a long list of registered names for future litters.

5. What is your favourite breed?

ESS are my favourite, but mainly because I felt as though I understood them from the very beginning. I love that they are full of contradictions...from my website:

"playful yet deadly serious about their "job"; seemingly boundless energy coupled with an off-switch when needed; they are sweet, snuggly and soft but with a determination to get the job done that belies their size; I love at once their birdiness in the field and their ability to relax with the cats at home; their coat and ears that are prettily feathered but still easy to groom. And let's not forget those beautiful, soulful eyes that look to me attentively for the next "game" and seem to manipulate everyone else!"

6. What is your favourite group?

Definitely Group 3 although there are breeds outside that that I love too.

7. Is there a breed that you admire, but probably wouldn't own?

Afghans and Standard Poodles - so much stunning but I'm not sure I can get inside the head of a sighthound and the grooming on a Poodle would kill me. I don't like having coated dogs completely clipped off.

8. Do you compete with your dogs in any discipline?

Ziggy competes in obedience, agility and has his Endurance Test title although we mainly focus on agility at the moment.

Em competes in agility and in retrieving trials

Ginny makes her debut in agility next weekend (yay!)

9. Have you had an achievement, large or small, with a dog that you're particularly proud of?

Certainly gaining Zig's Agility Champion title was really special - first 600 height dog in Victoria and the first and only Dalmatian in Australia to do so.

Raising Em's first litter was the most incredible experience. I was so proud of her effort during the Bob Bailey workshop a few weeks ago - she was just amazing. Sports wise her highlights have been Novice Agility Champion at the 2016 Nationals and the Judge's award at the National Retrieving Trial in Victoria back in 2014 I think. She was pick up dog on a paid pheasant shoot and that was certainly one of my proudest moments. The feedback from participants was pretty overwhelming.

Ginny - being the first person in the world to hold her still blows my mind. I love the relationship we are developing.

All my dogs are ambassadors for their breed and for positive reinforcement training - they go on breed stands at expos, do agility and retrieving demonstrations and attend University with me when I give lectures on dog behaviour/welfare.

10. What games do your dogs most enjoy playing?

Endless list...because in my world work=play=work....

11. Are you drawn more to male or female dogs?

I love them both but I do really enjoy the wildness of the girls....it's very intense but so rewarding when you pull it off.

12. What are your favourite coat patterns or colours?

Funnily enough I wanted a liver Dally but love my black spotted boy. I prefer a liver ESS but a good dog is never a bad colour. With ESS I like a fair amount of white on the dog as it makes them much easier to see when they are working in heavy cover.

13. What discipline or sport in the dog world do you find most interesting?

Agility and Retrieving - both really but I guess I'm so new to retrieving still and positive reinforcement based training is not common there so I'm fascinated in how to translate my understanding of operant conditioning to the very difficult skills.

14. What would be your dream household of dogs?

Pretty much think I'm there - I've got the perfect spread of ages, one dog slowly retiring from agility and a youngster to go on with.

15. Where is your favourite walk?

Probably the forest near home but I can't take the Springers there as they go completely crazy with all the birdlife. So I will drive an hour to use Dogs Vic facilities where they can safely hunt the ducks, swim and run.

16. Does your dog have any funny habits?

Zig plays with his toys like a 12 week old puppy - he's like a bucking colt! He always thinks the cats are his bestest friends. Goes from deep sleep to alarm barking in under 2 seconds. We like to call him "the angry drunk" He is the biggest flirt since Cassanova. And every girl on the planet adores him.

Em buries under the doona despite me telling her how warm it is. She always re-appears 2 minutes later complaining about how hot it is

Ginny just RUNS. And runs. And runs. And does crazy spins when getting taken outside for her dinner. By the same token she adores our bed and will sleep there no matter how warm it is.

17. Do you have a favourite piece of dog gear?

Equipment is my favourite....love my purple wing jumps from Jahzzy Agility. And definitely my Bumper Boy which I brought back from the USA in my suitcase - it's a remote dummy launcher.

18. What are your goals for your dogs?

Happy, healthy and full of confidence and joy whenever I invite them to work/play with me.

19. Have you had what you consider to be a heart dog?

I thought Dolly, my first ACD, was my heart dog...but now I've got another three "heart dogs" in the house I've realised that it's much more about what I choose to put in and take out of every relationship. They've all had their challenges!!!

20. List five things you love about your dog

I love their enthusiasm and joy

They really are stunning to look at

I'm always impressed at how well they get on yet there is a clear hierarchy

All three are incredibly easy house dogs...the hardest thing is keeping their paws clean

Funny and cheeky....and it's not always the youngest one!
