Mostly newbies will get direct help from an experienced competitor. That's how I started. I actually spent a few hours working with a newbie yesterday so it's nice to be able to give back. I'm also a scientist, behaviourist and positive reinforcement based trainer so I'm very particular about how things are taught. I have been strongly considering running an online course for beginners as it's so hard for them to find help! There is so much misinformation and poor training out there.
