Advice please on choosing family dog

Bella is gorgeous thank-you, I will look into her. Pet Rescue has also just put a load of terrier puppies up too that are sooo adorable. Also a lab cross. If it doesn't rain it pours! Our neighbour has a miniature fox terrier/jack russell cross and my daughter likes her, but I do know they have the tendency to be a bit yappy and as we found when we walked our neighbours dog - not good with other dogs. hmmm

I had to look up Fauves, I'd never heard of them before - gorgeous!

Thanks Scrappy and Monty for the links to the books, they look fantastic. I will get hold of them. My girl was scared of dogs after being jumped up on by a lab when she was little, but in the past year she has grown in confidence and loves dogs. Almost too much at times, so learning dog behaviour is a good idea!

You're welcome re the books. :)

I was accidentally pushed over and chased by the lovely little dog next door when I was a toddler. She was apparently a really sweet gentle thing but she didn't really know how to act around kids and I didn't know how to act around dogs. I think I instinctively ran, and she instinctively chased! Then got crash tackled haha. Left me with quite the fear when I was little. Parents were overly confident I think, they grew up around dogs their whole life. Dad told me the other day one day when he was only 4yo he was playing out on the street with his dog, another loose dog came by and they didn't like each other and had a bit of a tiff. He saw his best buddy being bitten by another dog so he just went in to help and of course got bitten too! :( Didn't phase him though haha!

Bella looks gorgeous and being only 3 is a great age. Puppies can be a bit full on but by 3, you've got a nice settled dog. You'd just want to watch what she's like on walks, sounds like she could be frightened of other dogs out. I'm not so good at reading dog ads for the hidden meanings but this made me think of a mastiff cross a friend got from a foster organisation, who is majorly dog shy and frightened on walks. Happy to have dogs come and play at his house though and a lovely dog at home.

"teaching her to socialise without being scared of dogs in the big wide world (Bella will happily play with dogs at home on play dates, but strange dogs in open spaces are still a bit scarey for our cuddly muffin)"

Yes for youngs kids puppies get excited and start to mouth with those little pin sharp teeth not to mention those sharp little claws.  As mentioned a young 2-3yo rescue dog wuld be a better choice.  But make sure you have a two week trial period to make sure

I've had foxie cross (mutts) my entire life. Never owned a yapper,  but Ice iwned some real d**ks with other dogs. I certainly allowed "little dog syndrome" before I knew better.

Luck of the draw really, but I say with total bias, they make amazing family pets. That said I also had a papered Jack Russell & Id be wary of going there again. He was a pain in the butt & its no wonder he was rehomed with us.

I would get a slightly older dog to start with. pups mouth , sharp teeth on kids hurts! They tug at clothes too. An adult dog in foster is a good start who is used to kids , you get a trail period too.

As your backyard opens into an off-lead reserve, it may be a good idea to avoid noisy breeds and/or get an older, quiet dog. You probably don't want a dog that barks every time people and dogs walk past.

True.

we have a back lane and people tend to walk their dogs down there. Every 10mins it seems the dogs are rushing up the back to see the other dogs. It's funny though, some people/dogs they don't care about and just let them go past, others they get super excited for*, and others they get territorial and grumpy! They can tell who's coming before they're even in sight!

*Off topic, but it's so cute. Monty is dog reactive on walks, but he never does the same thing when dogs are walking past his yard

but there's a lovely lady who owns one of my dogs' best friends, she walks him with a muzzle on so I assume he's nervous/reactive with either humans or dogs too, I haven't ever had the chance to have a proper chat, but it's so sweet because the two dogs who are reactive and anxious normally are really calm and happy when they see one another! :)
