Breeder Concerns

Hi everyone, I am after a Pomeranian X Chihuahua puppy, I am finding it hard to find a suitable, trustworthy breeder, so if anyone can suggest one to me or point me in the right direction that would be great. But, I am concerned about what I should ask the breeder to assure they are reliable, what should I know about the breeder and puppies before I invest in getting one

Kudos to you for asking, but anyone breeding "designer" dogs won't be in it for the health of the dogs. They are puppy farms or backyard breeders, not reputable registered breeders who breed for health and type.  Sorry, not what you wanted to hear, but that's the facts. I'd go for one or the other, then find a good, reliable breeder.

Look at that smile :) ....  and with all vet work done .

Oh .. the date is November last year ... would it still be current ?

Good spotting PK!

@persephone

on Petrescue it generally says "not available for adoption" or "on hold" or "adopted" or something like that once they are unavailable.

This little girl must have just been in foster care for a little while :)

(Or they forgot to mark her as unavailable)

@Amber Griffin  so the other one fell through ? :(

I have one breeder that I found on gumtree that has a litter due in a few weeks, so far I have only gotten pictures of the parents and I am unsure of their reliability so I am keeping options open. Also, thanks so much for the links you sent me they were extremely eye opening and helpful!

I am now having to rethink all of my life choices hahah, the dog I already have is a  cavoodle and she is beautiful and the perfect temperament so I never had negative thoughts on designer breeds

Glad you found DOL! :)

Ok, you'll have some reading to do about backyard breeders, puppy mills/puppy farms, and designer dogs.

Most "breeders" on Gumtree are BYBs (backyard breeders) so it seems this Pomeranian x Chi pup is probably not coming from the best place.

If you are set on a Pomeranian x chihuahua or similar mix, have a look at Petrescue and check it regularly :)

Also read about choosing a good breeder and ethics etc, and have a look at the Pomeranian and Chihuahua breeders on DogzOnline. Maybe have a look at some other similar small breed dogs too, and speak to the breeders about what you're looking for in a dog and they could help you out! :)

I'll see if I can find some articles in particular on BYB and puppy farming, but if you google it it'll come up with loads.

You REALLY want to steer clear of dodgy breeders :(

I know you can't adopt yet, but just to show you they have some on Petrescue.

This fella has been in foster care for a while, I've seen him pop up before:

And this girl, not sure if you have little kids though.

Oh my gosh, she's beautiful! The only issue is I'm not able to take her now, I have to wait 10 weeks for the next NSW September school holidays :( Where do you manage to find these puppies?

You know you just can't find a puppy inside a specified time unless you are extremely lucky and happy to settle for anything that shows up in your 2 week window.

Hi Amber, I just wanted to share my experience regarding looking for one of these designer breeds. Like you, I would also be a first time dog owner, and originally wanted to get a Labrador x poodle (due to my limited experience in dogs, breeders and the resulting phenotype of these crosses) during the school holidays, as half the families around my neighborhood had them and told me how great they were with kids and about their no shedding bonus.

But as as I was looking for lab x poodle breeders locally I came across a blog/website on google called "farms of shame" which was a real eye opener for me on the going ons on puppy farms. So many people discussing on there had come across lots of health problems in their purchased dogs related to poor breeding crosses, uncertified parent pedigrees etc, the list goes on. But more importantly the thing that saddened me the most was the conditions the dogs would've been living in and the puppies would've been born into...it's hard to imagine how one breeder could realistically socialise and care for puppies from 10 plus litters simultaneously in the house, as a lot of them say they do, rather than an overcrowded outdoor kennel.

while I'm sure there may be some good and ethical "designer" dog breeders out there who may breed genuinely, I couldn't go ahead with my original plan for moral reasons and for the reason that I may be unknowingly supporting puppy farming. Then I found dogzonline and the experts on here have given me some great alternatives and invaluable advice.

Best of luck in finding your puppy/dog :)

Chihuahua Rescue Queensland might be good to get in touch with. They seem to be behaviour savvy.

I do know a highly reputable, Delta qualified NSW trainer who could help you find a dog from a breeder or rescue with her dog-matching service. PM me if you'd like info @Amber Griffin. x
