I thought this would be timely given our member surveys are in.

What could a website possibly spend a million dollars a year on?

“… Our new Giving Pawtal also allows you to login and update your card details, view your donations, or change your donation amounts online at any time, without fuss…”

http://us1.campaign-archive1.com/…

PetRescue has taken tens of thousands of dollars of donations that rescue would have spent on feeding and caring for pets and redirects it into… a better way to count their money.

This new donor management system is no doubt why PetRescue got a new website, when the previous one wasn’t even five years old. This new focus on donations requires logins to cross platforms; connect this donor system up with the adoption enquiries and you have a national rescue donation redirection system.

Or in PetRescue speak - a "Giving Pawtal" talking to a "Matchmaker System";

"... Part of the total raised from The Adoptables will fund the next phase of The Matchmakers project that we’re calling ‘Adopter Profiles’. This means pet seekers will be able to create and save their own detailed online adopter profile..."

(Don’t worry, rescue get some late-date Eukanuba).

Rescue are totally outgunned in this race. PetRescue are emailing your supporter base regularly. They're tracking new adopters and putting them into a donor pool. They're using the most sophisticated solicitation strategy money can buy. And they're telling your supporters that a donation to them is as valuable - or even more valuable - than a donation to you.

And, I’m sorry to tell you this, but your adopters don’t know who you are.

Most adopters have no idea they're not adopting from PetRescue. Once they pack that adoption contract into their paperwork archive, unless your rescue is in constant contact with them, in a couple of years all they remember is PetRescue, and that's who will be getting their donor dollars.

Exactly one year ago, I blogged that this was coming.
If you’re a rescue that didn’t take steps to protect your IP then - then you’re 12 months more invested than you should be, but it’s not too late. The article details the steps to take.

Rescue groups are about to face a funding crisis. Don't let your group be one of the casualties.

A follow up to this post.

PetRescue has a sophisticated communications strategy called ‘on-boarding’ - which starts the moment a potential adopter makes first contact with a rescue group via the website. That is, every single application made through the PetRescue website, to a rescue group, becomes a donation solicitation. Every single one. As soon as that first connection is made, PetRescue will gently start communicating with this potential adopter - in the overwhelming majority of cases, before they've had a chance to hear back from a rescue group.
